R Charles Snyder Salute $5000 To Win IMCA Modified Race Flier September 1-2 HERE

2nd Annual R Charles Snyder Salute Brings Best Competition To Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...The biggest race of the season is on the schedule at Southern Oregon Speedway this Saturday and Sunday nights. It is the Second Annual R Charles Snyder Salute, paying tribute to the long time radio DJ and racing announcer. Competing divisions include the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars and a Sunday appearance by the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks.

For over 40 years, Snyder was a popular radio DJ in the Medford area. Through the years, he also announced at the old Medford Speedway, Siskiyou Motor Speedway and Southern Oregon Speedway. He lent his voice to different causes to help people within the community and also promoted some big concerts through the years. When he passed away in 2015, many people mourned his loss.

Under the management of KJE Enterprises, Southern Oregon Speedway wanted to have a special race to honor Snyder and reached out to his son Travis to schedule the first event last year. Travis, who like his father has been a leader in helping people in the community, was moved by the gesture. He also stepped in to help bring in some sponsors for the big Modified show. During the big two day weekend, the scoring tower was dedicated as the R Charles Snyder Memorial Race Tower.

Travis Snyder, joined by Travis Hoppes and Claudia Linker, has worked to bring in sponsorship to increase the IMCA Modified and IMCA Sport Modified purse money again this year. The drivers will also compete for lap money. In both Main Events, if you lead a lap, you get $10 per lap. Also, there will be an R Charles Snyder Salute t-shirt available this weekend. This will be an event that Charles would surely be proud of.

Once again, the IMCA Modifieds will be racing for $5,000 to win on Sunday. The IMCA Sport Modified payoff has been increased to $2,000 to win this year. Already, there are over 40 confirmed Sport Modified drivers coming to compete, and the list of entries planning to race in the IMCA Modified portion of the show is approaching 40.

Last season, Troy Foulger picked up the $5,000 paycheck in what was his biggest win. He beat Mark Wauge for the win. Seven-time Southern Oregon Speedway champion Wauge is hoping this will be his year. He had his hands full holding off Bobby Hogge IV to get that second place finish. Hogge has won some of the biggest races up and down the West Coast throughout his decorated career and would have to be considered the driver to beat this weekend.

Bakersfield Speedway star Robby Sawyer will be making his first appearance at Southern Oregon Speedway. Sawyer is currently second in the standings at his home track. Meanwhile, Merced Speedway point leader Darrell Hughes II has his eyes on the big payday following his win in the Ed Parker Tribute race at his home track. Brothers Chase and Chris Neiman, two of the frontrunners at American Valley Speedway in Quincy, California, are coming along with past Susanville champion Larry McCracken.

Past Quincy champion Jeff Olschowka will be making another appearance as will Willamette Speedway champion Collen Winebarger, who won the Speedweek race at Southern Oregon Speedway earlier this season. Decorated Nevada and California champion Robert Miller will be coming in from Nevada once again, and local racer Jeremy Richey will be making a rare appearance. That's just a sampling of the big-name drivers that will be coming from all over the West Coast for a shot at the big money. We just got late word that 2016 Speedweek champion Kellen Chadwick is coming.

Of course, when they get through the gates, they'll have to deal with local stars Albert Gill, Zach Fettinger and Nick Trenchard. Gill is a two-time track champion and current point leader, while Fettinger has won three Main Events this season and is second in points. Nick Trenchard collected his second win of the season last time out. He has a knack for winning the big races, including the Beads Shipwreck Nationals in Elma, the John Arnberg Memorial in Yreka and the Roger Haudenshild Tribute Race at Southern Oregon Speedway. Dave Duste Jr, Duane Orsburn and James Welschonse are others anticipated from the area.

About the biggest name in IMCA Sport Modifieds that you'll find in Oregon is two-time Southern Oregon Speedway champion Jorddon Braaten. Braaten won the big race last season and has spent much of his time traveling up north as the point leader at Willamette and Cottage Grove this year. Braaten has his eyes on the $2,000 payday and enters as the early favorite to win. Two-time champion Mike Medel hopes to have something to say about this.

From California, Yreka point leader Trevor Tiffee plans to run this race along with 2016 Yreka champion Jimmy Lipke. Merced Speedway stars Tanner and Chase Thomas are planning to make the trip. Reigning Chico and Marysville champion Phillip Shelby is coming to race along with Marysville racers Jimmy Ford and Alan Furuta. This is just a sampling of the over 40 drivers planning to come race the Sport Modified show.

Point leader David Marble will be hoping to make his presence known on the big stage. Marble is hoping to notch his first division championship and has been a consistent Top 5 finisher. He's also one of seven different Main Event winners this year along with second-ranked Branden Wilson. Other local leadfoots such as Willie McFall, Tony Duste, Tony Bartell, Billy Richey and Jesse Merriman are anticipated.

if the two Modified divisions aren't enough, the Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association is anticipated with another big turnout. Young Cody Peters was the point leader at the last update, and he and his two-time championship winning father Brock Peters should be leading the pack this week along with championship contenders Kalvin Morton and Chad Cardoza, two-time champion Josh King, ageless veteran Fred Hay and Ryan Smith.

The Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks will be a part of Sunday's card for what is their second and final appearance of the season. Dr. Scott Lenz has been winning everywhere they go and holds a 50 point lead over Scott Flowers in their championship race. Lenz won the Main Event the last time the group was at Southern Oregon Speedway. Other drivers to watch for include 2016 champion Steve Borror, the consistent Matt Harlow, Johnny Cobb, Roy Bain, Ginny Flowers, Bryan Hammond and Jeff Haudenshild. We've also received late word that First Class Auto Glass will be putting an additional $500 into the Main Event purse.

On both nights, the gates will open at 5 p.m. with the first race scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Tickets on Saturday will be $15 for General Admission. Seniors, Veterans and Juniors (7 to 12) will be $10 and children 6 and under are free. On Sunday night, General Admission is $20 with Seniors, Veterans and Juniors (7 to 12) $15. Children 6 and under are free. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Pit Stops

The Cascade Wingless Sprint Car Challenge race happened last week at Southern Oregon Speedway. One of the things that made this possible was to the sponsorship of Herz Precision Parts. Mark Herz, who is an avid supporter of Wingless Sprint Car racing in Oregon, stepped forward last year to get this show started, and this was the second running of the event. There were several things working against this show, including a couple of big Wingless shows in California. However, the race went on and entertained the crowd with the drivers who were there.

Once he knew the race was happening, car owner Ted Finkenbinder made his commitment to bring the championship car back for an attempted repeat. Once again, he put Geoff Ensign behind the wheel. Ensign is as skilled with a wing as without a wing. Not only has he won the big USAC Turkey Classic in Ventura, he was also the champion at both Watsonville and Petaluma last season. He was clearly the driver to beat going into the night.

Not many of the local drivers were brave enough to take the wings off of their cars and give this race a shot. Some of it might have been the fear of the crash that happened when Kyler Barraza returned to the race after a crash. Honestly, the type of crash that he endured could have happened with a wing or without a wing, but many of the locals either didn't show up or were up in the stands watching.

The one exception was Jeffrey Hudson. This rising young star has gone from winning championships in Outlaw Karts to the Pro Stock championship in 2015 to Sprint Car "Rookie of the Year" at Southern Oregon Speedway a year later and currently second in the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car Series. In his young career, Jeffrey has racked up quite a list of credentials, and he was certainly a sleeper contender for the big win.

Shawn Arriaga is a third generation racer who has already won championships at both Antioch and Petaluma Speedway. He has also begun to dabble in wingless racing and has upcoming wingless shows at Petaluma and the historic Calistoga Speedway on his schedule. Interesting enough, Southern Oregon Speedway was the first time that Shawn had ventured out of California for a race, and he was very excited to be there.

Third-ranked Oregon Wingless Sprint Car Tour racer Lindsay Barney and fourth-ranked competitor Mark Herz were also there along with Northwest Focus Midget star Jonathan Jorgenson, who was driving for Sterling Kane. There were some good drivers in the field to give the fans a show. The format called for qualifying on the clock with the Top 2 drivers punching their tickets into the Scramble without need of a heat race start. Ensign was no surprise as fast time, and Arriaga looked really good at second quick. Though they were in the heat races, Barney and Jorgenson handled themselves well in scoring their respective victories.

The Scramble would determine the order at the front of the Main Event. The Top 2 qualifiers and the Top 2 finishers of the heat races redrew, and Arriaga got a front row start for the Scramble. He proceeded to lead all eight laps for the win, followed by Barney and Ensign. This gave Arriaga quite a bit of confidence going into the 25 lap race with the $3,500 prize on the line. It paid back pretty well with $1,500 for second, $1,000 for third and even $700 for fourth.

Arriaga led early, but it didn't take long for Ensign to move in and battle him side by side. By lap seven, Ensign had taken the lead. By lap 15, Ensign was a straightaway in front. Ensign clearly appeared to be on his way to the big win, but Arriaga was not being threatened in his quest for second. It wasn't until he slipped off the groove exiting Turn 4 on the 22nd lap that Arriaga paid dearly for his mistake. He hit the wall and flipped to end his race, though he got out of his car unshaken. By then, Hudson had managed to take over third in his battle with Jorgenson and Barney.

When the race resumed, nobody was stopping Ensign from repeating as the champion of the race. Hudson was delighted with the $1,500 second prize, especially considering that his car had an oil leak that his crew was able to fix during the red flag after the Arriaga flip. Barney wasn't letting Jorgenson back around her as she scored the third place finish. All in all, it was a good show for the Sprint Cars, though there was some question where the other competitors were considering this was the biggest paying Wingless Sprint Car race of the year in Oregon.

The Late Model division appears to be a two-car battle for the championship between reigning champion Nathan Augustine and John Dees. Rookie Miles Deubert is still lurking within range, but he needs a few breaks to go his way. One of them actually happened on Saturday night. Deubert was really not even sure what he would be doing going into the season when the opportunity came to take over the 2017 Madras Late Model championship car.

When Miles came out and won the season opener, it seemed like he might be the surprise championship contender. Since then, he's tried different set ups. On Saturday night, he gave everybody a glimpse when he looked pretty good in the heat race, but the best was yet to come in the Main Event.

Deubert followed John Dees into second on lap three as Nathan Augustine began to fall back. Augustine discovered he had a left rear flat tire, and rather than stalling for a yellow flag, he headed for the pits. Not long after that on lap nine, Deubert made the move around Dees for the lead. He took it from there to his second win of the season. For Dees, this was his fourth second place finish of the year as he managed to cut some more points off of the Augustine lead. Augustine is now 13 points in front of Dees, and Deubert is 21 points behind Dees.

For Augustine, the night started with such promise as he won both the Trophy Dash and his heat race ahead of Bob Dees. It looked like he might have the car for a clean sweep on this occasion, but the flat tire put an end to that. it shows the respect and sportsmanship of Augustine that rather than mess up the battle for the lead and stall, he kept going to the pits. However, if something like this were to happen again, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him do things differently.

Meanwhile, Bob Dees was finishing third ahead of Dave Foote in the Main Event. It was a solid night for 2016 champion Dees, and he managed to move to within nine points of Foote, who finished behind him in fourth. In fact, Bob is also just 13 points behind Deubert with a shot at third in the standings once again. There are two races left, and anything can happen. The division welcomed past Pro Stock champion Dave Everson into the field. Dave was still getting things sorted out and would join Augustine in the pits before the finish.

David Steele has had such an amazing season that all he will need to do is start the next Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main event to lock up his first championship at his home track. This was the goal for the longtime Mini Stock competitor along with taking the spot atop the all time division Main Event winner's list. David knows that he'll get the best competition from his fellow competitors, including teammate Steve Goetz. The 2013 champion Goetz illustrated that well by denying Steele the Trophy Dash win. Goetz joined Steele as a heat race winner and then chased him early in the Main Event. However, Steele wasn't getting beat by anybody as he scored his eighth feature triumph of the season.

Goetz was hoping to ride along in the second position, but Hunter Magnan had other ideas. Magnan has had an up-and-down season in recent weeks, but he continues to hold on to second in the standings. After a disappointing outing at the previous race, Hunter knew he needed to come up big. He had his third season-best second place feature finish, while his closest point rival, reigning champion Kristopher Mix, ended up a disappointed last in the 10 car field. This enabled Magnan to put some distance between himself and Mix in the race for second. He leads Mix by 27 points, while Mix is only 15 points ahead of Goetz in the battle for third.

With two point races left, there is still a chance for a few positions to change hands and some intriguing possibilities. Though Ashtin Hedges might not have been thinking about points after a late start, he finds himself trailing Michael McLeod by just 23 points. Hedges picked up another Top 5 finish in fifth last week. To do so, he had to battle two-time reigning Yreka champion Marilyn Yawnick, and he nearly cost himself as he cut Turn 2 too early and drove into the infield. A few laps later, he regained 5th and managed to keep Steele at bay to keep himself on the lead lap.

Goetz and 2014 champion Gary Anderson battled for the third position with Goetz coming out ahead. For Anderson, the point race is pretty much a done deal, but he'd still like to get a Main Event win before the season comes to its conclusion. To think that he's even out there in a position to possibly win is amazing considering how hard he hit the front wall in his heat race a few races back. The fifth place point position continues to be held by Garrett Fredrickson, but McLeod is only 20 points behind him. Garrett needs to get out there and keep finishing if he wants to hold on to that spot.

2016 JOAT Labs Hornets champion Tim Hedges might have been just a tad bit aggressive during the night. The heat is on in the championship battle, and it's the surprising Bree Tritchler who seems a lock for top rookie honors this year while also standing in Hedges' way in the point lead. Tritchler has picked up four second place finishes and a win this year. Hedges needed to come up big after an overheating issue dropped him back a few more points in the past couple of weeks. Hedges went out there and picked up a Trophy Dash win, and also made an and aggressive move in picking up a heat race victory. Joining him in the heat race winners category was second generation racer Dylan Irving.

We've seen just about everything happen to Dylan this year. He's had his ups, and he's had his downs. But this kid has shown his toughness and has never given up. It wasn't a question of if, but when he would win the Main Event. Hedges was the driver standing in his way, but when he got his car up on two wheels on lap eight in the main event and nearly rolled, Irving made his move into the lead. Amazingly, Hedges kept his composure and maintained third all the way to the checkered flag.

For Irving, there was still the pressure of teammate Brandon Wonsyld, who has picked up two wins and was looking for his third. Dylan wouldn't give up the lead as he held off Brandon for the hard-fought victory. While Hedges cut Tritchler's lead down to six points, Wonsyld was able to take a four point lead over Chris Boynton in a close battle for third. It was just not Boynton's night. Brandon is left to wonder what might have been had he not missed a pair of races. He led the early goings of the season. Irving, meanwhile, is still in the hunt for third, 21 points behind Wonsyld and 17 behind Boynton.

After Jenna Hedges' car was sold to the Silva Racing Team, she finally returned in the #4t car that was driven by her husband of 17 years, Tim, to the 2016 championship. Interesting enough, that car may be the longest running car in this division as it was a part of the program in 2015 as well before Tim bought it. Jenna didn't have a great night, but she still managed to move into sixth in the standings. One driver who did look good was Dylan Sauer. Dylan had his best finish yet in fourth and has moved into the Top 10 in the standings as a result.

Now is the time to make your move. Everything comes to a conclusion after September 22nd. There will be two more races at little Southern Oregon Speedway and four more races on the big track, including this weekend's big R Charles Snyder Salute. There should be some good racing action from now until then, and you never know who might win on any given week.

Ensign Wins $3,500 Prize In Cascade Wingless Sprint Car Challenge Race At Southern Oregon Speedway
\
Geoff Ensign#3f and car owner Ted Finkenbinder win the Cascade Wingless Sprint Car Challenge.
White City, Oregon...August 25...Taking the lead from Shawn Arriaga in the early laps of the race, Geoff Ensign went on to win the 25 lap Cascade Wingless Sprint Car challenge race Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. The event offered a $3,500 first prize thanks to sponsorship from Herz Precision Parts. Ensign won this race last year and won it again this year aboard the Ted Finkenbinder owned car. Local Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car competitor Jeffrey Hudson removed his wing and impressed with a $1,500 second place finish.

The Wingless Sprint Car competitors had an opportunity to qualify on the Jim Rodgers prepared 3/10 mile clay oval, and Ensign clocked in with the quickest lap of 12.950, beating the 13.190 of Arriaga. Ensign picked up the $100 bonus money for setting the fast time, and both drivers were able to avoid running the 10 lap heat races and went straight to the eight lap Scramble. Northwest Focus Midget star Jonathan Jorgensen won the first heat race ahead of Tim Alberding. Lindsay Barney impressed with her win in the second heat race ahead of Hudson. Arriaga drew a front row start for the eight lap Scramble and scored an impressive victory ahead of Barney.

Arriaga charged into the lead at the start of the Main Event with Ensign immediately settling into second. The lead duo ran close at the front before an inside pass in Turn 4 of the sixth lap gained Ensign the lead. Barney was running third ahead of Jorgensen and Hudson in a close battle for that position. Ensign had a straightaway advantage by lap 18 with Arriaga holding second by a comfortable margin as well. Jorgenson made a low pass in Turn 2 of the 20th lap to take third from Barney, but Hudson made an outside pass on the front stretch a lap later to get around Jorgenson as the drivers negotiated traffic. Working lap 23, Arriaga came out of Turn 4 too hard and hit the front wall and rolled. Fortunately, he was not injured. During the red flag, the Hudson team managed to deal with an oil leak that could have ended their race. Ensign led Hudson and Barney on the restart, and they ran in that order to the checkered flag as Barney pocketed $1,000 for her third place finish. Jorgensen settled for fourth, followed by Tim Alberding, Lance Hallmark, Mark Herz, Guy Weedman, Arriaga and Kevin Pendergrass.

At Southern Oregon Speedway

Miles Deubert #38 won his second Late Model Main Event.

White City, Oregon...August 25...Taking the lead from John Dees, rookie Miles Deubert went on to win the 20 lap Late Model Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. This was the second win of the season for Deubert, who won the season opener. Dees settled for his fourth second place finish of the season.

Point leader Nathan Augustine won both the four lap Trophy Dash and the six lap heat race, both ahead of Bob Dees. With a pole position start, Augustine charged into the lead ahead of John Dees. However, Dees raced by Augustine for the lead on lap three with Deubert quickly settling into second. Augustine discovered he had a flat tire and headed for the pits on lap eight as the battle heated up at the front of the pack. An inside move on the front stretch of the ninth lap gained Deubert the lead. Bob Dees had a good hold on third. Deubert ran strong the rest of the way for a well earned victory. John Dees settled for second, followed by Bob Dees, Dave Foote, Mike Linder, Dave Everson and Augustine.

Steele Closes In On Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Championship With Eighth Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

David Steele #67 won his eighth Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main Event.

White City, Oregon...August 25...Leading all the way from his front row start, David Steele won the 20 lap Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. The win was his eighth of the season, and he can lock up his first track championship by just starting the next Main Event. Hunter Magnan rebounded from some recent bad luck with a much-needed second place finish.

Steve Goetz started his night off on a high note with a four lap Trophy Dash win. Steele and Goetz then locked up front row Main Event starting positions with their respective six lap heat race wins. Steele charged into the lead at the drop of the green flag ahead of Goetz and Magnan. Magnan traded third with 2014 champion Gary Anderson a couple of times before getting the spot with a Turn 4 pass on lap four. An inside pass in Turn 4 of the seventh lap put Magnan into second. Rookie Ashtin Hedges was enjoying a good battle with Yreka point leader Marilyn Yawnick for the fifth position. Steele caught slower traffic on lap 13 and soon caught the battle for fifth. Hedges took an infield excursion off of Turn 2 to lose fifth, but he regained the position from Yawnick on lap 17. Hedges managed to stay on the lead lap as Steele won ahead of Magnan, Goetz, Anderson, Hedges, Yawnick, Garrett Fredrickson, Mike Whitaker, Mike McLeod and Kristopher Mix.

Irving Wins First Career JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event
At Southern Oregon Speedway

Dylan Irving #11 won his first career JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event.

White City, Oregon...August 25...Taking the lead from championship contender Tim Hedges in the early stages of the race, Dylan Irving won his first career JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Hedges was working on a potential clean sweep, but when he got on two wheels in Turn 4 and nearly rolled, he fell back two positions as Brandon Wonsyld picked up the second place finish.

Hedges won both his six lap heat and the four lap Trophy Dash, while Irving grabbed the win in the other heat race. Hedges and Irving had front row starts, and Hedges charged into the early lead ahead of Irving. An outside pass on the front stretch of the fourth lap gained Wonsyld third from point leader Bree Tritchler. Moments later, a caution flag flew for Chris Boynton. Hedges continued to lead Irving and Wonsyld on the restart. Working the ninth lap, Hedges got on two wheels in Turns 3 and 4 and lost momentum. Irving passed Hedges at the line, and Wonsyld gained second a lap later. A final caution flag waved for Boynton on lap 16. Irving continued to lead Wonsyld and Hedges on the restart, and they ran in that order to the checkered flag. Dylan Sauer was a season-best fourth, followed by Tritchler, Boynton, John Ferreira, Jenia Silva and Jenna Hedges.

Ensign Pockets $3,500 For Sprint Car Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

Ensign Pockets $3,500 For Sprint Car Win
At Southern Oregon Speedway
Geoff Ensign#3f and car owner Ted Finkenbinder win the Cascade Wingless Sprint Car Challenge.

White City, Oregon...August 25...Geoff Ensign won his second Cascade Wingless Sprint Car 25 lap race Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. The win paid $3,500 to Ensign in the Ted Finkenbinder owned entry thanks to race sponsorship from Herz Precision Parts. After winning the Scramble to be on the pole for the Main Event, Shawn Arriaga paced the first five laps before an inside pass in Turn 4 of the sixth lap gained Ensign the lead.

Ensign began to pull away and work slower traffic by lap 14. Arriaga was holding on to second until he hit the front wall on lap 22 and flipped for a red flag. He was uninjured. By then, local Winged Sprint Car star Jeffrey Hudson was in third. Ensign led the remaining three tours for the win Hudson pocketed $1,500 for second, followed by Lindsay Barney, Jonathan Jorgensen and Tim Alberding.

Miles Deubert #38 won his second Late Model Main Event.

Rookie Miles Deubert picked up his first 20 lap Late Model Main Event win since the season opener. Point leader Nathan Augustine led two laps before surrendering the position to John Dees on lap three. Augustine discovered he had a left rear flat tire and headed to the pits as Deubert took up pursuit of John Dees. An inside pass on the front stretch on lap eight gained Deubert the lead, and he stretched his advantage to a full straightaway by the time the checkered flag flew on the non-stop event. John Dees settled for second, followed by Bob Dees, Dave Foote and Mike Linder.

David Steele #67 won his eighth Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main Event.

David Steele continued to close in on the Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock championship with his eighth 20 lap Main Event victory. Steele led the race from the outset and went flag to flag in a race that needed no yellow flags. Hunter Magnan made a move around Steve Goetz on lap seven to take second all the way to the finish. Goetz settled for third ahead of Gary Anderson and Ashtin Hedges.

Dylan Irving #11 won his first career JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event.

Dylan Irving won his first career 20 lap JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event. Tim Hedges was working on a clean sweep after winning his heat race and the Trophy Dash. He led the first eight laps before getting on two wheels in Turn 4 and watching Irving and Brandon Wonsyld race by for first and second. A yellow flag flew on lap 18, but Irving led the restart and held off Wonsyld for a hard-earned victory. Hedges, Dylan Sauer and Bree Tritchler rounded out the Top 5.

Next week is the Second Annual R Charles Snyder Salute. The two day event will pay $5,000 to win for IMCA Modifieds and $2,000 to win for IMCA Sport Modifieds on Sunday. SODCA Dwarf Cars will run both days and the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks will be there on Sunday. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

$3,500 To Win Wingless Sprint Car Race Saturday Night
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...It's been an exciting month of August at Southern Oregon Speedway, and Saturday night's racing will bring it to a close. Fans have seen two big Dwarf Car shows, a big Winged Sprint Car event and five Southern Oregon racing legends get inducted into the Hall of Fame. On Saturday night, it's the Second Annual Cascade Wingless 360 Sprint Car Challenge Race, presented by Herz Precision Parts. Joining the Sprint Cars on the bill will be the Late Models, Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks and JOAT Labs Hornets.

The lure of the $3,500 first prize is going to bring out some big name talent for this special Wingless Sprint Car race. It takes a different breed of driver to wheel these cars around the track without a wing, and in Geoff Ensign you have a driver who is just as fast with a wing as without. Last season, he won the Winged Sprint Car championships at both Petaluma and Watsonville in California. He came up to Southern Oregon Speedway and drove the Ted Finkenbinder entry to the win in last year's Wingless Sprint Car race. Ensign and Finkenbinder will be back to defend the honors.

Last Saturday night, second-ranked Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car competitor Jeffrey Hudson was making laps without a wing. The talented 18 year old leadfoot is excited about making his first Wingless start, and he looked good in practice. Last year, 2016 Winged Sprint Car champion Jake Wheeler was a surprise entrant, and he ended up finishing fifth in the Main Event. He too will be removing his wing and making a run at the big money.

Past Northwest Wingless Tour and Oregon Double Shot Series champion Tim Alberding will be coming down to make a run at the money as well. Three-time Oregon Double Shot Series champion Guy Weedman will also be competing in this year's race. He will be joined by two-time Orland Raceway Wingless champion Bill Hopper and 2015 Antioch Speedway Sprint Car champion Shawn Arriaga.

Young Ariel Biggs is making a name for herself at various races up and down the West Coast. She's not afraid to get behind the wheel of a Sprint Car or a Midget, and she's won races in both divisions. She competed in the Northwest Focus Midget Race at Southern Oregon Speedway earlier this year, and she will be back this Saturday along with such other notables as Mark Herz, Kevin Pendergrass and Lance Hallmark. A field of roughly 16-20 competitors is anticipated for the big money race.

The Late Model point battle is anything but over. After picking up three second place finishes this year, John Dees finally scored his first ever victory in the most recent race after passing leader Nathan Augustine. The win enabled Dees to overtake rookie Miles Deubert for second in the standings, and he only trails Augustine by 20 points. Deubert has been struggling just a little bit lately, and he only leads Dave Foote by 16 points in the battle for third. Foote won his heat race and the Trophy Dash last time out. Other drivers to watch for this week include Bob Dees, John Dees and Mike Linder.

People might have been wondering why point leader David Steele did his "Polish Victory Lap" after winning his seventh Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main Event of the season. This was his 27th career win at Southern Oregon Speedway, making him the all-time Mini Stock Main Event win leader. Steele is well on his way to the championship, leaving the battle between reigning champion Kristopher Mix and Hunter Magnan for second. Mix finished third in the Main Event last week, moving him to within 12 points of Magnan. Steve Goetz looked good in his third second place finish of the season, and 2014 champion Gary Anderson was back finishing fourth after a hard crash into the front wall a few week earlier left the rest of his season in doubt. Word is we may see Yreka stars Marilyn Yawnick and Mike Whitaker for a second straight race, and other drivers to watch for include Garrett Fredrickson, Ashtin Hedges and Michael McLeod.

Bree Tritchler had her worst finish in six races, and that's the bad news. The good news is she finished third and continues to lead 2016 champion Tim Hedges by 13 points in a close JOAT Labs Hornets championship race. Bree's teammate Chris Boynton won his second Main Event of the season last week and leads a very close battle with two-time winner Brandon Wonsyld and Dylan Irving for third. Wonsyld is only seven points back. Other drivers to watch for this week include Zach Nelson, Jenna Hedges and Dylan Sauer.

Saturday nights Sprint's Car show will offer plenty of excitement for the fans. Wingless racing isn't something we get to see here very often, and the money will draw some top-notch talent. Gates open at 5 p.m. with the first race starting at 7 p.m. General Admission is $15. Veterans, Seniors and Juniors (7 to 12) are $10 and Children 6 and under are free. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com or check out the track's Facebook page.

Pit Stops

Last Saturday night was Hall of Fame Night at Southern Oregon Speedway. It was another opportunity for the track to honor the heritage of Southern Oregon racing by inducting five new members into the Hall of Fame. This year, the Southern Oregon Racing Hall of Fame welcomed Bruce Rayburn, Dane Smith, Dick Wallace, Dave Duste Sr and Rick Hunsley. All five were well-received by the crowd in attendance.

Rayburn and Smith we're both Late Model stars at the old Medford Speedway in the 1980s. At one point, Rayburn had won 3 championships in a row, and Smith was a champion as well. Wallace won multiple Stock Car championships in the 1970s. Sadly, he has since passed on and was represented by his son and daughter to accept his award.

For the 1990s, Dave Duste Sr was honored for his three championships in Yreka and his three runner-up seasons and more than 20 Main Event wins at Southern Oregon Speedway, among other accomplishments. Rick Hunsley was the final point leader at Medford Speedway in Late Models back in 1989. He was responsible for opening the Yreka race track and giving Southern Oregon racers a place to go racing while John Skinner built Southern Oregon Speedway.

The heritage of racing at any track or within any racing community is important. Those stars of the past are the ones who inspired the stars of today, just as the stars of today are  are inspiring the stars of tomorrow. As a final touch, Hall of Fame Night included four display boards with clippings from throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Fans were enjoying the displays all night as they read about the past stars.

The IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Modifieds both got their final tune-up before the Big R Charles Snyder Salute race that is coming up on September 1st and 2nd. Extra money is coming in, and in fact we're still waiting on the official word. Already known is the $5,000 to win prize for the IMCA Modified winner on September 2nd. Also, the IMCA Modified and IMCA Sport Modified divisions will compete for lap money. If you lead a lap in the Main Event, you receive $10. All laps in both Main Events have been paid for.

Late word as this column is being written has the IMCA Sport Modified purse being increased to $2,000 to win and $1,000 for second and a minimum of $150 to start. Travis Hoppes has been hard at work bringing in sponsorship, and Claudia Linker is the one responsible for bringing in most of the lap money and landing some sponsorship for additional money in the purse itself. Word is that over 40 Sport Modified competitors have committed to this show and over 30 Modified drivers. It's sure to be a show you won't want to miss.

Having recently won the Beads Shipwreck Nationals at Grays Harbor Speedway in Washington, Nick Trenchard was on the fence about whether he was even going to race Saturday night. However, at the last minute, he decided to go racing to check out his setup. If Saturday's show is any indication, Trenchard could very well be the man to beat this year. It seems that in recent years he's come up big in the big money situations. On Saturday night, Trenchard only took a few laps to get the lead in the Main Event. Once he got there, not even Albert Gill could take it away as Trenchard rolled to his second Main Event win of the season.

Gill, meanwhile, grabbed his third Trophy Dash win to start the evening. The second place finish he earned was his third of the season to go with two third place finishes. He's still looking for his first win of the season. After a crash at the Shipwreck Nationals, Gill had quite a bit of damage to repair on his car, but it looked like things were back to normal again. He maintains the point lead over Zach Fettinger. However, the R Charles Snyder Salute will be the final test.

The Sunday portion of the big event is for IMCA points, and there will be top drivers coming from California and Northern Oregon for a shot at the big money. Just making the Main Event is the key, and Gill's disappointing heat race efforts last season left him in the B Main, which he was unable to transfer up from. If he makes it through everything this year, it may be difficult for anyone to beat Gill for the championship going into the September 22nd finale. It's all riding on  the R Charles Snyder Salute. But even more than that, Albert is looking to score his biggest win ever that night.

Likewise, Zach Fettinger would have to be considered a player in the R Charles Snyder Salute. He's a three-time winner this season and currently holds second in the standings. He drove a solid race on Saturday and ended up third at the checkered flag ahead of Jesse Bailey. We haven't seen Bailey as much this year after winning last season's championship, but he drove a good race in holding off Dave Duste Jr for fourth. Duste was the first driver out of the previous race, so fifth was much better as he tries to dial things in for a shot at the big money win.

We also saw a rare appearance from Jon DeBenedetti. DeBenedetti was wheeling the Brian Bowman car and kicked his night off with a heat race win. Unfortunately, all wasn't right in the Main Event and he was out early. As a past John Skinner Memorial winner, beating Bobby Hogge IV that night, you would have to consider DeBenedetti a threat to win the R Charles Snyder Salute. After being a victim of a crash on the one lap shootout restart last time out, Jantzen Knips was back in a new car. He led three laps of the Main Event, but his race didn't go much longer before he retired.

We've been hearing rumblings for a few years now about how the IMCA Sport Modified division's car count was really going to grow  This year, they have been delivering the cars. On Saturday night, there were 23 competitors looking for that final tune-up before the big $2,000 to win show. This puts the division right on the borderline of needing a Semi Main, which means it's a very competitive class. David Marble entered the night with a 30 point lead and was running as high as fifth in the feature when he spun out late in the race. This was his first non Top 5 finish of the season, and Branden Wilson managed to gain a little ground on him with a sixth place finish.

One of the young stars from the Yreka area is Ethan Killingsworth. For the past few years, he's been a Top 5 competitor in his pickup truck in the Mini Stock division in Yreka, but this is his first season in the Sport Modified class. Ethan seemed to be getting around the track pretty well on the outside and led a few laps of the Main Event before Matt Sanders went racing by.

Matt Sanders has been traveling to various different venues this season and has been fast, but this was only the second time that we've seen him this year. He was joined by teammates Isaac Sanders and Steven Sanders, the latter of who ended up a respectable 10th in the Main Event. Matt was enjoying a good side-by-side battle with Ethan Killingsworth for a few laps before moving ahead. Once he got the lead, he still had to hold off Rich McCoy. McCoy has had some really good moments at the speedway through the years, including some Modified feature wins and a Mini Stock championship, and he was pressuring Sanders before Sanders forced him to settle for second.

Chico Silver Dollar Speedway competitor Tyler Rogers was back after winning the Main Event the previous race. He kicked things off with the Trophy Dash win, and then found his way to the front, making a late pass on Killingsworth for third in the feature. Killingsworth wasn't the only Yreka driver representing in the Top 5. Randy Wright, who ranked third in points in Yreka in 2017, ended up finishing fifth.

If the IMCA Modified battle at the R Charles Snyder Salute is going to be tough, the Sport Modifieds promise to be even more intense. With that kind of competition coming to Southern Oregon Speedway, the stars in the championship battle will be under quite a bit of pressure just to make the big Main Event. Tony Duste, who is in a battle with Wilson, Willie McFall and Tony Bartell for second, managed to finish 9th in the Main Event. McFall had the worst luck of the bunch as he was out early in the evening and ended up last. It hasn't been a very good run for the past few races for 2017 point runner-up McFall, and he'll be hoping to turn his luck around at the big race.

We probably haven't been looking at John Dees as much as we should be. His father, Bob Dees, is the 2016 Late Model champion. This year, John seems to have stepped his game up quite a bit and had three second place Main Event finishes going into Saturday night. During the first half of the Main Event, it looked like second might be where he would finish again, but things suddenly took a positive turn in his direction.

Incoming point leader Nathan Augustine had two feature wins coming into the night and led nine laps of the Main Event before getting just a bit out of shape and being passed by Dees. Moments later, Augustine's luck went from bad to worse when he spun. Dees simply motored ahead at the front of the pack and added the Main Event win to his heat race win from earlier in the evening. Augustine battled all the way back to second, but he was called on a jump start infraction and dropped two positions on a late restart. He ended up third, and he now leads John Dees by 20 points in a close championship race.

We hadn't seen long time competitor Mike Linder in the field in several races. There might have been some question as to how well he would do or if there would be a little bit of rust, but the old man still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Linder ran a good race. Augustine may have passed him once, but in the waning laps, Linder forced him to settle for third and punched his ticket into this Saturday night's Trophy Dash in the process. Looking as good as he did, you can't count him out in the battle for a Main Event win this week.

In fourth, you had a battle between Bob Dees and his son Garrett Dees. Bob would get it to the finish line in fourth and will also be in the next Trophy Dash. Garrett was just happy to be back again. About a month ago, he was at Sunset Speedway with brother John, who won the Main Event that night. Garrett's luck didn't go quite as well as he crashed. He was making his return in the former Matt Micheli car and looked better than he has in some time.

Top rookie Miles Deubert continues to struggle as he's been trying different setup things on his car. He struggled back in eighth at the finish. Meanwhile, Dave Foote had the best preliminary effort of anybody with wins in both his heat race and the Trophy Dash. His Main Event ended in sixth, which was probably just a bit disappointing for the one-time feature winner as he looks to make a move into third in the standings.

David Steele wins again. That seems to be the headline for just about every Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main Event. The runaway point leader could very well clinch his first Southern Oregon Speedway championship after Saturday night. Helping make that possible was his seventh win of the season last week, which capped a sweep of heat race and Trophy Dash. Steele was in a celebratory mood and did an Alan Kulwicki Polish Victory Lap that might have had people confused. Just another win? This was David's 27th career win at Southern Oregon Speedway, making him the all time win leader in the history of the class.

Teammate Steve Goetz still hasn't ruled out the possibility of making a move up a position or two in the standings. The 2013 champion currently ranks fourth. He ran a strong second in the Main Event, and this time, Steele didn't get too far ahead of him before the checkered flag waved. Goetz leads the division with four second place finishes as he looks to get his first feature win of the season this week.

Behind Goetz, reigning champion Kristopher Mix and 2014 champion Gary Anderson were having a good battle for third. They traded the position a couple of times before Mix finally took the checkered flag ahead of Anderson. Anderson was another one of those drivers just happy to be back. The last time out, contact with another car sent him head-on into the front wall with severe front-end damage. His season might have been over, but Anderson logged many hours to get it back together. He was rewarded by earning a heat race win earlier in the evening before clinching a Trophy Dash starting spot this week with his fourth place finish.

The Trophy Dash was where Ashtin Hedges was this week. The young up-and-coming star led the race for three laps before spinning coming out of Turn 2. Hedges was right behind the trio of Goetz, Mix and Anderson at the checkered flag for a respectable fifth place finish. Mike Whitaker and Marilyn Yawnick were both battling for Top 5 finishes. These two drivers are battling for the Yreka championship this season, which would be the third for either of them. Unfortunately, Whitaker had motor problems in the Main Event, and Yawnick also had problems force her to retire. Both drivers enjoyed their visit, and we may see them back this week to try again.

The JOAT Labs Hornets division continues to have a battle between Bree Tritchler and 2016 champion Tim Hedges for the point lead. However, Hedges seems to be driving a car that's motor is just a bit tired. He ran second in the Main Event for several laps, but in the last few circuits, he faded back to fourth as Brandon Wonsyld raced by for his fourth second place finish, while Tritchler ended up third. She now holds a 13 point lead over Hedges.

Wonsyld and Tritchler now each have four second place finishes. Had he not missed a pair of races, it's likely that two-time feature winner Wonsyld would be leading the standings. As it is, he's not too far behind Chris Boynton in the race for third. Boynton helped his cause by winning his heat race and his second Main Event of the season last Saturday. With Wonsyld and Dylan Irving chasing him, he knew he needed a win.

It seems as if the season has taken a toll on the car count. While there were as many as 14 cars earlier this season, the number had dwindled down to six last Saturday night. A few drivers, including Zach Nelson and reigning champion Jason Stoutenburgh, are out with motor problems. Though this division is seen as an economical entry-level class, it is still expensive at times to keep the cars going.

The Old Time Racers of Oregon Hardtops were back, and Mark Minter continues to be the driver to beat. It started in the heat race for him as he held off Trophy Dash winner Bill Trotter for the victory. Minter led Trotter throughout the entire distance in the rapidly run Main Event with Dean Cast a solid third. The win was the third straight for Minter.

John Butler was making his Hardtop debut in the former Brian Crouch car, and he led two laps of the Trophy Dash before doing a solo spin on the back straightaway. He spent the Main Event battling Jay Smith for the fourth place finish. Earlier in the evening, Chris Mehrer was hoping the new blue paint job on his car would change his luck. Unfortunately, he needed a tow truck to lift his car off the track and load it up after hot laps. Not the kind of night he was looking for.

Outlaw Kart Pit Stops

The Outlaw Kart program at Little Southern Oregon Speedway is seven races old, and it's the young kids who seem to be having the closest championship battles. In the Beginner's Box Stock class, Chayce Smith made the trip from Hayfork to come race once again. The last time we saw the six-year-old leadfoot, he was scoring a convincing victory in the season opener. This time, incoming point leader Carson Henson had his eyes on a win. Smith had the lead, but Henson stuck with him like glue. Henson had earlier won a heat race and attempted a last-lap pass at the line, only to fall just short in second.

Austin Bartholomew, who was a Main Event winner the last time we saw him, did a good job of getting his kart to the finish line in third ahead of reigning champion Malachi Johnson. With Uriah Sanders absent from the recent race, Henson is leading Johnson by just six points going into September. As a four-time winner, Johnson may seem like the driver to beat. We'll have to wait until September 7th to find out.

When race day comes, Jayme DeBenedetti will have her eyes on third in the standings. She trails Uriah Sanders by just eight points despite not having the best of nights In seventh behind heat race winner Kellen Hurst last week. It was a very active day for Albert Gill Jr. Gill, who made his debut by sweeping the Novice Box Stock races at the previous event, spun in the first heat race and was hit, forcing him to miss a heat race while his father and Kenny Boardman were making repairs. He came back and finished fifth in the Main Event.

Keaton Augustine has been practically unbeatable in the Box Stock division, and this has forced Ryan Hirschbock to do everything he can every week to keep the point damage to a minimum. Though Hirschbock had a feature win earlier this season, Augustine won three in a row going into Friday night. However, Hirschbock was about to have his most dominant performance of the season. Augustine was denied the Winner's Circle all night as Hirschbock picked up a pair of heat race wins and then won the Main Event.

The Main Event had an interesting start as Hirschbock bolted into the lead. The cars got a little too close for comfort exiting Turn 2, allowing Hirschbock to have a straightaway advantage by the completion of the first lap. When Augustine gained second a lap later, there was just too much distance to make up. He settled for second and maintains a 12 point advantage going into the next race. Three drivers who have been racing at Cottage Grove this year occupied the next three positions as Mason King was third ahead of Willamette point leader Keegan Bounds and Cottage Grove point leader Kasey Simmons. Bounds brought a second Box Stock to the track that he practiced with at the end of the night before heading down to Cycleland Speedway.

The most supportive team over the past two-and-a-half seasons has been the Grimes team, but reigning 250 Kart champion Trevor Grimes was absent on Friday. This broke the race wide open in favor of Vinny DeBenedetti, who emerged with a 31 point advantage despite not having the best of nights. All Vinny needs to do for the rest of the season is keep making starts and get his points, and the championship should be his.

Speaking of championships, Cale Cunial is on his way to the Yreka championship this year. He, twin brother Cole Cunial and Dallin Degata made a surprising visit on Friday. Cale swept both heat races and the Main Event ahead of Cole for the 1-2 finish. With his third-place finish, Taylor Fuller is within two points of Grimes for second. As of two races ago, it appears as if Taylor has made the move up from the Box Stock division completely now and is focusing on the 250s. His older sister Brianna Fuller just had her cast removed. This meant that as per doctor's order, she couldn't run the UAS Speedway Kart this week, but the next time we see her, she may be running both the Speedway Kart and the 250 Kart.

Speaking of the Speedway Karts, Steve Rambo took a big step towards the championship on Friday Night by sweeping his division. Rambo won both of his heat races and set a rapid pace in winning his third straight Main Event. His closest competitor in the standings is now the 4 cycle Kart of Lori Fuller, who trails him by 30 points. Larry Fuller was feeling just a little bit beat up after the previous race and opted not to compete, dropping him to one point ahead of 2016 Yreka champion Ed Grubb in the race for third. Grubb helped his cause on Friday by finishing second in the Main Event ahead of Lori Fuller and Ken Gaines

The youngest of the young drivers were again given the Novice Box Stock race. There were three drivers, but Uriah Boardman was not comfortable with the safety precautions that his father initiated following the youngster's crash into an infield pole last time and decided not to race. The youngest competitor in the field, Caleb Ranney, was just a little bit scared going out there, but in the two races he did start, he did just fine going out there and making his laps at his own pace and taking the checkered flag.

Bhaltair Edwards, meanwhile, has shown noticeable improvement as he won both heat races and the Main Event. He appears to be just about ready to race with the Beginners Box Stock drivers. The Novice class was implemented three races ago as a way to give the newest drivers an opportunity to go racing without being too intimidated by the more experienced beginners.

Trenchard Scores Second IMCA Modified Win
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...August 18...Taking the lead from Jantzen Knips on the fourth lap, Nick Trenchard went on to win his second 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. It was a last minute decision for Trenchard to go racing. He won the $2,000 prize in the Roger Haudenshild Tribute race earlier this year and has positioned himself as one of the favorites to win the $5,000 R Charles Snyder Salute on Labor Day Weekend.

The night also included Hall Of Fame induction ceremonies. Dane Smith, Bruce Rayburn, Dave Duste Sr, Rick Hunsley and the son and daughter of Dick Wallace were there to receive Hall Of Fame plaques and say a few words for the fans in attendance. Display boards in the grandstand area featured clippings and photos from Medford Speedway.

Point leader Albert Gill kicked off the evening with a four lap Trophy Dash win. Jon DeBenedetti made a rare appearance and won his six lap heat race. Zach Fettinger picked up the other heat race win. It was Jantzen Knips racing into the early lead ahead of Duane Orsburn. Dave Duste Jr led Trenchard around Orsburn in Turn 4 on the second lap, and a high pass in Turn 4 of the fourth lap gained Trenchard the lead from Knips. Moments later, Knips spun for a caution flag. Trenchard led the restart with Gill making an inside pass on the backstretch to take second from Duste. Fettinger went low in Turn 4 on lap seven to grab the third position from Duste, and a lap 12 caution flag flew for Dave Satterfield in Turn 1. Trenchard led through two more caution flag periods with Gill running closely behind in second. However, during the final seven laps, Trenchard begin to pull away to a straightaway lead by the time the checkered flag flew. Gill settled for second, followed by Fettinger, Jesse Bailey, Duste, Orsburn, Don Jenner, Satterfield, Brett Provost and Knips.

On September 1st and 2nd, it's the R Charles Snyder Salute. The Sunday portion of the program will pay $5,000 to the winner. IMCA Sport Modifieds will also be competing, along with the Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars and Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Sanders Becomes Seventh Different IMCA Sport Modified Winner At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...August 18...Grabbing the lead from Rookie Ethan Killingsworth on the ninth lap, Matt Sanders went on to win the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Sanders became the seventh different winner in seven races after holding off a late challenge from Rich McCoy.

The IMCA Sport Modifieds produced a 22 car field, and previous winner Tyler Rodgers scored the win in the four lap Trophy Dash. Six lap heat race wins were recorded by Killingsworth, Braxton Possinger and McCoy. Billy Richey set the early pace in the Main Event, followed by Killingsworth. Rodgers settled in third on lap two, and a caution flag waved for Possinger a lap later. Killingsworth took the lead from Richey on the restart, and another caution flag waved for a backstretch tangle involving Travis Hoppes, Danny Rule and Willie McFall. Rodgers took the lead from Killingsworth on the restart, but Killingsworth made an outside pass on the backstretch a lap later to gain the lead. Sanders moved into second on lap eight and made an inside pass on the frontstretch a lap later to take the lead from Killingsworth. A lap 10 caution flag waved for debris in Turn 4.  Sanders led Killingsworth and McCoy on the restart, and McCoy went underneath Killingsworth for second on lap 13. David Marble spun in Turn 4 for a lap 16 yellow flag, and Sanders continued to lead McCoy on the restart. Rodgers made an inside pass in Turn 2 of the 18th lap to gain third from Killingsworth. Kasey Simmons held second on the opening lap, but Augustine made a Turn 2 pass a lap later to grab the position. Mason King settled into third on lap three. At that point, Hirschbock held a commanding straightaway lead in front of Augustine, and it remained that way in the non-stop event all the way to the checkered flag.
