Hudson Wins First Pennzoil Sprint Car Feature
 At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 24...Hays Oil Championship Night at Southern Oregon Speedway was a night of firsts for the Pennzoil Winged Sprint Car division.  The night included first time Main Event and Trophy Dash winners and a first time champion.  Taking full advantage of his front row start, 15 year old Jeffrey Hudson won the 25 lap Main Event.  It was the first Sprint Car win for Husdon, who was the 2015 Outlaw Pro Stock champion.  Hudson needed to come up big to hold off Wayne Kniffen for second in the standings after Kniffen won his first career Trophy Dash.  Hudson was also the only driver with a shot at the championship, but Jake Wheeler wrapped that up when he finished second to Kniffen in their heat race.

The night started with a Trophy Dash, and Kniffen held off previous Trophy Dash winner Rowdy McClennon for his first win in a Sprint Car.  Kniffen followed that up by holding off new champion Wheeler to win his heat race.  Hudson scratched from the Trophy Dash but returned to win his heat race ahead of Todd Whipple.  Extreme Sprint Car and Wingless Sprint Car ace Cooper Desbiens blew a motor in hot laps to scratch for the night.  Hudson and Kniffen brought the field down for the Main Event green flag, and Hudson raced into the lead.  After one lap, Whipple broke a driveline and coasted to a stop in Turn 2.  Hudson continued to lead Kniffen and McClennon on the restart.  Wheeler was battling Ivie for fourth when he lost power in Turn 4 for the final yellow flag on lap eight.  Hudson continued to lead as Kniffen tried to find a line that could get him past Hudson.  However, Hudson was setting a good pace as McClennon moved in to battle Kniffen for second.  An inside move on the front stretch gained McClennon second from Kniffen on lap 12, but at that point Hudson led by a straightaway.  Kniffen brushed the back wall on lap 14 and headed for the pits as Ivie was now third ahead of Jeremy Lowe.  McClennon found a good groove on the bottom and steadily gained ground on the leader aboard the Mark Michelet owned mount.  However, time ran out as Hudson scored an impressive victory ahead of McClennon, Ivie and Lowe.

Luck Aids Nash In Pro Stock Clean Sweep
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 24...Gaining the lead after leader Scott Flowers broke on a late race restart, Rocky Nash scored his second Valley Boys Auto Sales Outlaw Pro Stock Main Event victory Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Nash had won a duel with Flowers earlier in the evening for the Trophy Dash win and then won his heat race to make it a clean sweep performance.  With Steve Borror eliminated early, S. Flowers was doing everything he could to try to grab the championship, but his night ended in a disappointing ninth place finish and third straight runnerup season.  Matt Harlow drove another great race to finish a season best second.  Despite finishing last, Steve Borror's winning ways of 2016 carried him to the championship.

Much like the four lap Trophy Dash in their last appearance, Nash and Flowers battled fiercely at the front, but it was Nash prevailing on this occasion.  Nash then took the lead on lap three and won his heat race ahead of previous Main Event winner Miles Deubert.  S. Flowers held off rival Borror to win his heat race.  Flowers and Nash started back in the fourth row for the Main Event, and James Flowers charged from the second row to lead early ahead of two time champion Ken Irving and Ginny Flowers.  James Flowers had finally put a new motor in his car in the hopes of grabbing third in the final standings.  Nash made an inside move on the back stretch to take third from G. Flowers on lap two.  A back stretch pass on lap six gained Nash second from Irving as S. Flowers followed closely into third.  On lap eight, Deubert suddenly slowed right in front of Borror, who slowed to avoid a crash.  G. Flowers made contact with Borror for a yellow flag, and the race was over for Deubert and Borror.  James Flowers pitted with a flat, and Scott Flowers raced into the lead on the restart ahead of Nash and Harlow.  S. Flowers hadn't won all season or the year before, but he looked like he was headed for victory before a lap 18 red flag flew for a fire under the hood of son James Flowers' car.  On the fateful restart lap, S. Flowers broke in Turn 2, collecting wife G. Flowers as Scott Bennett and new "Rookie Of The Year" Julia Flowers tangled behind them.  With S. Flowers now sidelined, Nash beat Harlow on the restart and led rest of the way in victory.  Harlow used his season best second place finish to maintain third in the final standings.  John Bowers had a season best third place finish.  Roy Bain made a last turn pass on Irving to finish fourth as Ginny Flowers, Julia Flowers and Rick Lukens rounded out the Top 8.

Steele Steals The Show At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 24...David Steele's fellow competitors may be thankful that his Mini Stock return at Southern Oregon Speedway didn't happen until four weeks into the season.  As it is, the 2015 Yreka champion had five wins going into Saturday night and was only four points behind Andrew Hall in the battle for third in the standings.  Steele did everything he could do as he led the 20 lap feature from start to finish.  However, Hall continued to have things dialed in as he scored his third second place finish of the season to cling to a two point advantage for third by the end of the night.  Bob Burkett had a rare non Top 3 finish, but the new track champion did win his sixth Trophy Dash of the season.  Dillen Lausen gave a glimpse of things to come when he finished a season best third in the Main Event.

Burkett started his night off with his sixth four lap Trophy Dash win ahead of his closest point rival, Gary Anderson.  Merissa Henson impressed with her six lap heat race win ahead of Anderson.  In the other heat race, Steele and Hall battled fiercely for the lead, but Steele made a last lap pass for the victory.  Steele and Henson shared the front row for the Main Event, and Steele raced into the lead ahead of Hall and Burkett.  A yellow flag flew after four laps for debris on the track.  Steele continued to set the pace on the restart ahead of Hall and Burkett.  Henson and Anderson were locked in a close battle for fourth, and Lausen made it a three car battle by lap eight.  Lausen gained fifth on lap nine and slipped past Henson for fourth a lap later.  Garrett Fredrickson spun in Turn 4 for the final caution flag on lap 12.  Steele continued to lead Hall on the restart, and a low move in Turn 4 gained Lausen third from Burkett before the lap was completed.  Steele pulled away by a few car lengths as the Pinto Wagon of Hall had his hands full with Lausen.  Lausen was making the inside groove work and actually made a pass for second in Turn 2 of the 19th lap.  However, Hall held the position by the completion of the lap.  Steele brought it home to a satisfying victory, while Hall managed to win the battle with Lausen for second.  Burkett settled for fourth ahead of Kristopher Mix, Henson, Devon Weiser and Anderson.

Doty Delivers Fifth Super 4's Victory
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 24...This has certainly been a year for Super 4's competitors to be proud of at Southern Oregon Speedway.  After being absent from the roster for two years, the racers got the division back to the speedway and delivered 13 total cars during the course of the season with the promise of more to come next year.  As the season went on, Lee Doty got faster and faster.  On Saturday night, Doty sped to his championship clinching fifth 25 lap Main Event victory of the season.  With his second place finish, Charlie Eaton managed to finish third in the standings, while fourth place finisher John Barger will finish second in points.

The night started off with Eaton winning his second straight four lap Trophy Dash ahead of Krista Hadley.  Doty made a thrilling last lap pass on Eaton to win their six lap heat race, while K. Hadley continued a good night with her first heat win of the season ahead of Barger.  Seventeen year old Outlaw Kart graduate Dusty Aos was a Main Event scratch.  Doty shared the Main Event front row with K. Hadley and raced into the lead at the start.  A low move in Turn 2 of the fifth lap gained Eaton second, and Barger spun in Turn 1 in his bid for third for a yellow flag.  Doty led Eaton and K. Hadley on the restart.  Running in the top 5, Bill Spencer got out of shape and fell back several spots as Terry Hadley and Eric Aos ran in the Top 5.  Barger grabbed fifth from E. Aos on lap nine and worked his way up to battle the Hadley cars for third.  Meanwhile, Doty had a comfortable lead over Eaton.  Doty grabbed the checkered flag by a straightaway ahead of Eaton.  Barger made a move around T. Hadley for fourth on lap 20, but his last lap pass attempt on K. Hadley fell short.  K. Hadley enjoyed her third third place finish ahead of Barger, T. Hadley, E. Aos, Spencer, Mike Cloud and Dan Prewitt.

Hudson Ends Season With First Sprint Car Victory At Southern Oregon Speedway

Hudson Ends Season With First Sprint Car Victory
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...Fifteen year old Jeffrey Hudson drove a great race to win his first career 25 lap Pennzoil Winged Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  As Hudson wrapped up his rookie season with a win, Rowdy McClennon finished a solid second.  By taking the green flag, Jake Wheeler wrapped up the championship.

Rocky Nash won his second 20 lap Valley Boys Auto Sales Outlaw Pro Stock Main Event after leader Scott Flowers crashed with his wife Ginny in Turn 2 with two laps to go.  Matt Harlow enjoyed a season best second place finish.

Not even three yellow flags could derail new champion Lee Doty as he won his fifth 25 lap Super 4's Main Event.  Trophy Dash winner Charlie Eaton had a season best second place finish.

David Steele took the lead from the start and went on to win his sixth 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event of the season.  Andrew Hall was second for the second straight week, while Bob Burkett wrapped up his first division championship.

Jeffrey Hudson and Wayne Kniffen both had good starts as Sprint Car heat race winners, while Kniffen also won the Trophy Dash.  Hudson raced into the Main Event lead ahead of Kniffen at the start.  Kniffen surrendered second to Rowdy McClennon on lap 12.  McClennon was trailing by a straightaway at that point, and he began to reel Hudson in a little bit at the time.  However, Hudson was never really threatened as he scored the popular victory.  McClennon settled for second ahead of Raquel Ivie, Jeremy Lowe and Kniffen.

Rocky Nash won a wild 20 lap Outlaw Pro Stock Main Event after leader Scott Flowers crashed in Turn 2 with two laps to go.  James Flowers had a new motor in his car and led at the stat of the Main Event.  During a lap nine lap caution period, James Flowers pitted with a flat tire, and his father Scott Flowers raced by Nash for the lead.  A red flag flew on lap 23 for a fire under the hood of the James Flowers car.  The restart lap ended badly for S. Flowers as he crashed with hs wife Ginny and daughter Julia in Turn 2.  Nash found himself in the lead and withstood the challenge of Matt Harlow for the victory.  John Bowers finished third, and Roy Bain made a last turn pass on Ken Irving to finish fourth.

David Steele enjoyed a good battle with Andrew Hall all night in the Mini Stocks as these two drivers were also battling for third in the standings.  While Bob Burkett celebrated his track championship with his sixth four lap Trophy Dash win of the year, Hall held off Steele for second.  Steele passed Hall on the last lap to win their six lap heat race.  Steele then jumped into the lead at the start of the 20 lap Main Event with Hall a solid second.  As Steele led the way without much pressure from Hall, Hall repelled a serious challenge from Dillen Lausen to protect third in the final standings.  Lausen took the checkered flag with was a career best third place finish ahead of Burkett and Kristopher Mix.

Lee Doty has been unstoppable in Super 4's competition, and that trend continued with his fifth 25 lap Main Event win.  After winning his heat race with a last lap pass on Charlie Eaton, Doty had the pole for the Main Event.  He built up big leads after three yellow flag periods and won the race by a straightaway over a season best second for Eaton.  Krista Hadley won her heat race and held off a challenge from her husband Terry Hadley for third during the feature.  She then had to contend with a last lap pass attempt from John Barger.  However, K. Hadley held on for third ahead of Barger and T. Hadley.

Four Division Program Closes Season
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...The 2016 season comes to a close this Saturday night with a four division racing program on the 3/10 mile clay oval track.  Hays Oil Championship Night at the races will feature the Pennzoil Winged Sprint Cars, Valley Boys Auto Sales Outlaw Pro Stocks, Mini Stocks and Super 4's.  All season long, the Pro Stocks and Mini Stocks have been two of the best supported divisions by the racers.

In the Sprint Car division, Jake Wheeler appears to be headed for his first track championship on the strength of one win and three second place finishes.  Jake's father, Vern Wheeler Jr., opened the season with two wins before announcing his retirement from driving.  Jake has led the battle since then.  After collecting his second third place finish in the most recent point race, rookie Jeffrey Hudson is the only driver with a chance to overtake Wheeler in the championship battle.

Hudson won the Outlaw Pro Stock championship at 15 years old last year and has looked good in his first season in a Sprint car.  The second generation racer won his first heat race this year.  Another second generation racer is ten points behind Hudson in the battle for second.  Wayne Kniffin has finished as high as second this year and is hoping to win his first Sprint Car race this week.  As the third and fourth place finishers last time, Hudson and Kniffen will share the front row of this week's Trophy Dash.

Yet another second generation racer, Aaron Miller, won his first Main Event last time out in a rather emotional moment that he got to share with his father in front of his home crowd.  Other drivers anticipated this week include past Wingless Sprint champion Rowdy McClennon, past Cottage Grove champion Raquel Ivie and Todd Whipple.  Ivie had a second place finish a couple weeks ago in the Extreme Sprint Car Main Event

In his ten year career in Mini Stocks, Bob Burkett has won many races and finished as high as second in the standings four times.  As a three time winner who has not finished outside the Top 3 in ten races this year, Burkett has already clinched the track championship.  In fact, 2014 champion Gary Anderson has used his two wins to help him lock up second in the standings.  The battle is for third as Andrew Hall leads the tied Merissa Henson and five time winner David Steele by just four points.  Hall chased Steele last time out with a career best second, while Henson won her second Trophy Dash earlier in the evening.

Steve Borror has won seven Outlaw Pro Stock features this year, including the $2500 to win Billy Geyer Memorial and the $1000 to win Roger Haudenshild Honors race.  At this point, he is headed for the championship.  With seven Top 3 finishes and an impressive Trophy Dash win last time out, Scott Flowers seems headed for his third consecutive runnerup point season.  Up for grabs now is third place as Scott's son James Flowers and Matt Harlow have a good battle going.

James Flowers finished a strong second last time behind the flying Miles Deubert.  The win was Deubert's second of the year.  Fifth ranked rookie Julia Flowers will fight to hold off one time winner Rocky Nash for fifth in the standings as a field of over a dozen competitors is anticipated, including two time champion Ken Iving, Roy Bain, Scott Bennett and Rick Lukens.

Lee Doty finally overtook John Barger for the Super 4's point lead after his dominant performance last week.  Doty now has four wins.  Barring any major mechanical issues, Doty may be headed for the championship.  As the 2013 champion, Barger will give it a good effort this week.  Behind the lead duo, Charlie Eaton and Bill Spencer battle closely for third with Eaton holding a one point advantage.  Eaton scored an impressive Trophy Dash win last week.  The husband and wife team of Terry and Krista Hadley were back last week and finished second and third, respectively.

Gates open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday with the Trophy Dashes starting the program at 7:00 p.m.  Adult tickets are $12.00 with Seniors and Juniors $6.00 and children 5 and under free.  This will be the last chance this year to check out racing at the 20 year old racing facility.  For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Welshonse Wins IMCA Modified  Main Event
Wauge Champion At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 17...James Welshonse took advantage of a late race mishap to get the victory in the IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  It was the first career win for the division's top rookie, and he nearly used it to overtake incoming point leader Mark Wauge.  Welshonse was running right behind leader Scott Lenz and Wauge when the two cars got together, leaving Wauge stuck in Turn 2 for the yellow flag.  Welshonse overtook Lenz on the restart and went on to victory ahead of Jesse Bailey.

Welshonse started what would be a clean sweep performance by winning the four lap Trophy Dash ahead of Wauge, and he continued that momentum with a six lap heat race win ahead of Albert Gill.  Bailey won the other heat race in front of Wauge.  After breaking his arm in a crash on preliminary night at the Lon Skinner Memorial race, Ray Kniffen Jr. put past Pro Stock champion Scott Lenz in his car.  Lenz had a front row start for the Main Event and charged into the lead at the green flag ahead of Scott Crumm and Wauge.  Wauge made a low pass in Turn 4 of the third lap to take over second, and James Welshonse started an impressive outside groove charge to the front from further back in the pack.  An outside pass in Turn 4 of the fourth lap gained Welshonse fifth from Duane Orsburn, and he followed Monte Bischoff past Crumm on lap six.  Welshonse continued to work the outside groove and made a Turn 2 pass on Bischoff for third on lap eight.  Wauge was pressuring Lenz for the lead before Welshonse closed in to make it a close three car battle.  Welshonse got a good run exiting Turn 4 on several occasions, but Wauge made his car wide to prevent the pass.  The complexion of the race changed on lap 19 when Wauge and Lenz got together in Turn 2.  Welshonse made contact with Wauge, but Lenz and Welshonse were able to continue moving.  Wauge made a pit stop and rejoined at the back of the pack with rear end damage.  Welshonse made short work of Lenz as he made an outside pass on the restart.  From there, Welshonse sped to an impressive victoy.  Bailey slipped past Lenz for second on lap 22 and would finish there.  Lenz settled for third ahead of Bischoff, Crumm, Gill, Duane Orsburn, Tyler Smith and final lead lap finisher Wauge.

Melvin Wins Sport Modified Finale
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 17...Two time division champion Dwayne Melvin won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified season finale Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Melvin was enjoying a good battle with Rich McCoy during the first half of the Main Event before a stalled race car changed the complexion of the race.  McCoy made contact with the car to end his race.  Melvin led the rest of the way to win ahead of the division's top rookie David Marble.

Marble got things started with his third four lap Trophy Dash victory ahead of Mike Medel.  Medel won a heat race ahead of Willie McFall, while Rich McCoy held off Marble to win their six lap heat race.  Despite a wrist injury suffered in the pits at the IMCA Nationals in Boone, Iowa, Jorddon Braaten was back behind the wheel in an effot to try to preserve his Oregon State point lead.  Braaten sat out the heat race and started last in the Main Event.  A.J. Parker led one lap of the Main Event before spinning in Turn 2.  Melvin led McCoy and Marble on the restart.  The lead duo had a close battle for the lead for several laps until they encountered the stalled McFall car on the back stretch on lap ten.  McCoy made contact with McFall to end his bid for a second win in his "Lightning McQueen" #95 car.  Melvin led Marble and Medel on the restart.  Melvin set a good pace up front.  Though Marble and new track champion Medel were not far behind him, Melvin collected his first win of the season.  Toby Judd finished fourth with Braaten right behind him in fifth.

White City, Oregon...September 17...Setting a blistering pace from his front row start, Lee Doty won the Super 4's Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  It was Doty's fourth win of the season and came by a wide margin as he moved past John Barger and into the point lead.  Terry Hadley returned and enjoyed a season best second place finish.

Charlie Eaton won his first four lap Trophy Dash ahead of Bill Spencer as the two championship contenders got together in the final turn.  A slower car presented Terry Hadley an opportunity to steal a six lap heat race win from Dan Prewitt on the last lap.  Doty won the other heat ahead of Krista Hadley.  T. Hadley and Doty shared the front row of the non stop Main Event, and Doty bolted into the lead at the start ahead of T. Hadley and K. Dustin Comer had motor problems in hot laps to end his evening.  Bob Dees won the four lap Trophy Dash ahead of incoming point leader Mike Linder.  B. Dees continued a good night's effort by winning his six lap heat race ahead of his son John Dees.  Knight won his heat race ahead of the division debut of Garrett Dees.  Knight and B. Dees had the front row for the Main Event, and Knight immediately launched into the lead at the start of another non stop race.  G. Dees settled into third and J. Dees and David Schmidt battled side by side at times for fourth.  Knight had already lapped Linder by lap six and lapped J. Dees and Schmidt in the midst of their side by side battle on lap 15.  Schmidt also passed J. Dees for fourth.  Third place G. Dees was lapped on lap 16, and Knight scored the impresive victory ahead of the season best second place effort for new champion B. Dees.  G. Dees finished third ahead of Schmidt, J. Shields Closes Season With Third Straight Win,
Hedges Hornets Champion At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 17...Joby Shields brought the curtain down on the third Hornets season at Southern Oregon Speedway with a victory in the 20 lap Main Event Saturday night.  It was his third straight win and fourth of the season.  After winning his second Trophy Dash of the year, Tim Hedges was content to ride around behind rival Derrel Nelson Jr. for a championship clinching fifth place finish as Nelson continued to struggle with motor problems.  For the second time this year, the car count reached a division record of six cars.

Hedges won a thrilling four lap Trophy Dash ahead of Shields.  That was the only race Shields would lose as he won the six lap heat race ahead of Milt Carter in the Jesse Merriman car, which is currently up for sale.  Shields raced into the Main Event lead as Carter and Hayfork Speedway star Andy Blackburn battled for second.  Nelson had been struggling with timing problems the week before, and the two time feature winner still didn't have it all situated as he ran fourth.  Shields lapped John Hoult on lap 12, and Hedges went down a lap on lap 17.  Shields won the race by a half-lap ahead of Carter, Blackburn, Nelson, Hedges and Hoult as all cars finished the non stop race.

Welshonse Wraps Up Rookie Season With IMCA Modified Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

Welshonse Wraps Up Rookie Season With IMCA Modified Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...Gaining the lead after Scott Lenz and Mark Wauge got together on lap 21, Rookie James Welshonse won his fist career 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Welshonse somehow managed to escape the crash directly in front of him for the win as Jesse Bailey finished second.  Wauge limped to a ninth place finish and will unofficially win the championship.

Dwayne Melven dueled with Rich McCoy for half of the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event before getting his fist win ahead of likely "Rookie Of The Year" David Marble.  Third place finisher Mike Medel will wrap up the track championship, while fifth place finisher Jorddon Braaten still leads the Oregon State point race with one week remaining.

Pro 4 Wedge Car star Dustin Knight made his first start and dominated the Open Stock Main Event for an impessive 20 lap victory ahead of new point leader Bob Dees.

Lee Doty grabbed the Super 4's point lead with his fourth 20 lap Main Event victory.  He won by nearly a lap with the husband-wife duo of Terry and Krista Hadley in second and third, respectively.

Joby Shields wrapped up the Hornets season with his fourth 20 lap Main Event win.  Shields won by over half a lap ahead of Milt Carter, and Tim Hedges wrapped up the championship with his fifth place finish.

Rookie James Welshonse rode the outside groove to win his first career 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event.  Welshonse joined a close battle between Scott Lenz and point leader Mark Wauge for the lead by lap eight, but his efforts to race by on the outside proved fruitless with Wauge also trying to get by Lenz.  On lap 19, Wauge and Lenz got together in Turn 2, and Lenz and Welshonse somehow managed to keep their cars going.  Welshonse took the lead on the restart and pulled away to an impressive victory.  Jesse Bailey took second on lap 22 as Lenz settled for a third place finish ahead of Monte Bischoff and Scott Crumm.

Two time IMCA Sport Modified champion Dewayne Melvin won his first 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event of the season.  Melvin and Rich McCoy engaged in a side by side battle for the lead during the first ten laps, but it ended on lap ten as McCoy made contact with a spun Willie McFall on the back stretch.  Melvin led the restart and the rest of the way with Trophy Dash winner David Marble and new track champion Mike Medel not far behind him.  Toby Judd finished fourth with Jorddon Braaten collecting a fifth place finish to maintain his State point lead.

Dustin Knight made his Late Model debut a winning effort with his 20 lap Main Event victory.  Knight won a heat race along with Bob Dees, and he charged into the lead at the start.  Knight was clocking in with laps in the 12 second bracket as he flew around the track and lapped most of the field.  Trophy Dash winner B. Dees finished second with his son Garrett Dees third.  David Schmidt won a late battle with John Dees for fourth.

Lee Doty won the Super 4's Main Event in impressive fashion.  Doty charged out to the lead from the drop of the green flag and pulled further and further away with every lap.  Terry Hadley settled into second ahead of wife Krista Hadley.  Doty was soon lapping slower cars in the ten car field and lapped all the way to fourth place as Terry and Krista Hadley were second and third.  Trophy Dash winner Charlie Eaton and Dan Prewitt completed the Top 5 a lap down.

Like Doty and Knight, Joby Shields won a heat race to get a front row start in the Hornets Main Event.  Shields launched into the lead at the start as Milt Carter and Hayfork Speedway visitor Andy Blackburn battled for second.  By mid race, Shields lapped Trophy Dash winner Tim Hedges.  Hedges was focused on keeping rival Derrel Nelson Jr. in his sights as he tried to hold on for the championship.  He accomplished that goal as he finished a lap down in fifth.  Carter, Blackburn and Nelson rounded out the Top 4, all on the lead lap.

Racing concludes next week with the season finale program.  On the schedule will be the Pennzoil Winged Sprint Cars, Valley Boys Auto Sales Outlaw Pro Stocks, Mini Stocks and Super 4's.  For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Welshonse Could End Rookie Season With IMCA Modified Championship At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...With one race remaining on the schedule for the IMCA Modifieds, the track championship is still up for grabs.  It probably comes as no surprise to find Mark Wauge leading the way in his bid for a seventh division championship.  You may not be surprised to see two time Street Stock champion Duane Orsburn in the mix.  However, it's doubtful anybody anticipated that James Welshonse would be nine points out of the lead going into the final race.

In fact, James wasn't even sure he would be racing an IMCA Modified this year.  He sold his Sport Modified prior to the season.  "We were looking at another Sport Modified, but I was also a bit concerned with car count in the division " said Welshonse.  "The Modifieds had better driver support last season, and the deal for this car was just too good to pass up."

James has been competitive in several different divisions in his career.  At Reno-Fernley Raceway in Nevada, he just missed winning a very competitive championship and settled for second.  He came to Southern Oregon Speedway a few seasons ago in hopes of running the Street Stock class.  "I was a bit disappointed when only two cars showed up, " he recalled.  "I was used to the full fields we had in Nevada."

Fortunately, the program offered something he could get behind in the Mini Stock division.  He improved from sixth in points in 2013 to fourth a year later.  "I built a car, and we were pretty competitive, but then the car got destroyed at Yreka, " James explained.  "It was a two race weekend.  We won the first one, but got taken out the next night.  That's when I decided to move up."

Welshonse got a good deal on a Sport Modified and split his time racing at Medford and Yreka last year.  When he got a good offer from someone looking to buy the car during the off season, he made the sale.  The opportunity to move up to a full IMCA Modified was too good to pass up.  "These cars are a blast to drive, and I've already learned so much.  I feel like we are pretty competitive already."

James has won two Trophy Dashes at Medford and another one in Yreka, where he lost a close race for a Main Event win.  His real opportunity for a feature win came earlier this season at Southern Oregon Speedway.  After winning the heat race and Trophy Dash, he led most of the Main Event ahead of Orsburn.  Then, it slipped away from him when the yellow flag flew for Daniel Herrera's crash.  "I could feel the handling on the car going away, " said Welshonse.  "but I felt like I could still win the race.  What we didn't need was that yellow flag.  I tried, but I couldn't hold Duane off.  It was disappointing, but we're still having fun."

After the Lon Skinner Memorial, he actually gained more points than either Mark Wauge or Duane Orsburn.  He moved into second in the standings, just nine points behind Wauge and four ahead of Orsburn.  Considering how hard he had to work coming from the C Main to the big 100 lap Main Event, it was a big accomplishment.  "I figured we might have a shot at Rookie Of The Year, " James admitted.  "If we can pull off the championship, that would be nice too.  It's nice just to be in contention."

IMCA Modifieds are only part of this week's show.  Mike Medel is poised to win his first IMCA Sport Modified track championship this week.  The Open Stock Car class will reportedly see some new visitors this week, while Hornets and Super 4's round out a five division program.  Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with the first race starting at 7:00 p.m.  Adult tickets are $12 with Juniors and Seniors $6.00 and children 5 and under free.  For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Pit Stops

Mike Medel appeared to be headed for another respectable second place finish in IMCA Sport Modified points when point leader Jorddon Braatten got the offer to load his car with California IMCA State champion Fred Ryland and compete in the big IMCA Nationals event in Boone, Iowa.  There was no way Braaten was passing that up.  Having won the last two track championships, the decision has already been made by Braaten to move up to the IMCA Modifieds in 2017.

Medel and rookie David Marble both moved by Braaten after the two races on Lon Skinner Memorial weekend, though the weekend wasn't the best for either of them.  Medel left little doubt after the points were tallied that he will be the likely champion as long as he takes a green flag in the Main Event this week.  He also stands a good chance of repeating as Oregon State champion.

After gaining the point lead, Mike flew to Iowa to crew for his good friend's racing effort.  Unfortunately for Bratten, an accident in the pits left him with a wrist injury and unable to compete.  Medel caught a flight back in time to race in the non point event last week.

Despite heavy pressure from Marble and Dwarf Car ace Kalvin Morton, Medel won his first Main Event of the season.  "David has done a good job all year and it's been fun racing with him, " said Medel.  "The car was running pretty good, and it feels good to finally get a win here.  Hopefully we can do it again."

While Morton will reportedly be one of the rookies in the class next year, A.J. Parker is a rookie this year.  He nearly pulled off the surprise Trophy Dash win last week before settling for second behind Marble.  Parker has a shot at third in the standings.  "I'm hoping we can get it, " said A.J.  "It would be nice, but it's been a good season either way.  We've had fun, and we're coming back next year with a new car."

The Open Stock division comes back this week with Mike Linder holding a six point lead over Bob Dees.  Linder has two feature wins so far this year.  Both drivers have done some racing at Cottage Grove and Coos Bay this year as they work to spread the word of Late Models returning to Southern Oregon Speedway via the Open Stock class.  Bob's son John Dees made his division debut last time.

The last race was won impressively by Coos Bay point leader Nathan Augustine.  The original plans were for Augustine, Kristy Grout and others to come this week, but those plans have been effected by Coos Bay's addition of another point race for the Late Models this week.  Late Model veteran Dustin Comer is planning to visit, and we've gotten word that two time Outlaw Pro Stock feature winner Miles Deubert is preparing for another visit to shake things down for the September 24th Pro Stock finale.

The Super 4's division continues to gather momentum, and the drivers are hoping to end things on a strong note this week and next week.  With three Top 3 finishes and a Trophy Dash win, John Barger is clinging to a two point lead over Lee Doty.

If not for the fact that he scratched from the Main Event at the season opener, Doty would be leading the standings now.  He came back in the next race and hit the wall in his heat race.  His night might have ended there if not for the help he had from his fellow competitors getting the car back together for the Main Event.  With three dash wins and three feature wins, Doty is very much the driver to beat.

Of more importance to these competitors is the fact that they are reestablishing a division at the track that was popular and very competitive for years.  After John Barger's 2013 championship run, the class was dropped.  Already nine different drivers have competed this year, and Doty is working to get others out there before season's end.

Doty's teammate, Bill Spencer, has been running on backup power as he holds a three point lead over Dan Prewitt in the race for third.  "Other than the blown motor we had, I've been having a lot of fun racing here this season, " said Spencer, who has one third place finish so far.  "It's great to be able to race here again."

The Hornets have struggled to gain traction at the speedway this season.  Car count average is up, but it was hoped that there would be more of them out there.  Though rumors have circulated to the contrary, Hornets will be back in 2017.  This is good news to Tim Hedges, who just used a second place finish to take the point lead going into this week.  "We're planning to build a couple more cars next year, " Hedges revealed.  "I'm having fun here, and it's affordable enough for us to build a couple more cars and help get things going."

Two time winner Derrel Nelson Jr. had a disappointing night at the back of the pack last week, which cost him the lead to Hedges.  However, the team will be back next year.  In fact, Darrel is also planning to put together a second car.  They may all be chasing Joby Shields, who won his third Main Event last week.  Shields is not in the championship battle due to missing a race, but he is a threat to win any race in which he starts.

Bailey Hibbard Wins Extreme Sprint Car Feature,
Cox Wins Triple Crown Series Championship

White City, Oregon...September 10...Taking the lead from Raquel Ivie on lap 20, Bailey Hibbard went on to win the 25 lap Extreme Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  It was the first win of B. Hibbard's career and paid $800.  Ivie settled for a $500 second.  The race was also the third leg of the Triple Crown Series, which paid $1000 to the champion in a winner take all format.  Kinzer Cox had a third at Cottage Grove, a second at Coos Bay and a fourth at Southern Oregon to overtake David Hibbard for the winner's prize, which also included a nice trophy.  Coos Bay winner D. Hibbard was running second when he blew a motor.  He claimed the second place trophy in the Triple Crown Series, while Ivie received a trophy for third.

D. Hibbard kicked off the night with an eight lap heat race win ahead of Cox.  Ivie impressed with a heat race win of her own ahead of Dusty Redmond.  The feature lineup was determined by the finishing order of the six lap A and B Dashes.  D. Hibbard earned the pole with his A Dash win ahead of Ivie.  Camden Robustelli won the B Dash ahead of Jeffrey Hudson.  Anthony Pope struggled all night to get his car to run and was a Main Event scratch.

Ivie had the outside front row starting spot for the feature and raced into the lead at the start ahead of D. Hibbard and his son B. Hibbard.   Ivie set a good pace in the early laps as D. Hibbard got settled in.  Slowly, D. Hibbard began to reel Ivie in.  As D. Hibbard caught Ivie on the back stretch, a puff of smoke came from his motor and he slowed off the pace.  Thoughtfully, he pulled off the track into the Turn 4 infield to keep the race caution free.  Ivie was coming up on two slower cars and seemed a bit tentative in making a move.  This allowed B. Hibbard to move up quickly and challenge her for the lead.  Cox was running in third until a low move in Turn 4 of the 19th lap gained Cooper Desbiens the position.  On lap 20, B. Hibbard made an outside pass on the back stretch to take the lead from Ivie.  Once he grabbed the lead, B. Hibbard pulled away just a little bit for the impressive victory.  Desbiens caught Ivie, but she held him off for the second place finish.  Cox settled for fourth ahead of Redmond and Hudson.

Steele Runs Steady Pace For Fifth Mini Stock Win
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...September 10...Making good use of his front row starting spot, David Steele led all 20 laps to win his fifth Mini Stock Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Andrew Hall was slowly closing in on Steele in an impressive effort, and he scored his second runnerup finish of the season.  This enabled Hall to cling to third in the standings in a close battle with Merissa Henson and Steele.  Meanwhile, Bob Burkett used his third place finish to clinch his first career track championship.

Henson regained the lead on the last lap and won her second four lap Trophy Dash ahead of Burkett.  Steele won a six lap heat race ahead of Burkett, while Gary Anderson won his heat ahead of Dillen Lausen.  Steele had the pole for the Main Event and charged into the lead at the start ahead of Burkett and Anderson.  As Steele began pulling away, Hall used a low move in Turn 4 of the third lap to take third from Anderson.  Another inside pass in Turn 4 of the fifth lap gained Hall second from Burkett, but Steele was already a straightaway in front of him and approaching slower traffic.  Anderson made a Turn 4 pass on lap six to take third from Burkett.  Henson was having a good run in fifth while Anderson and Burkett battled fiercely for third.  Hall was slowly gaining on Steele, and Burkett regained third from Anderson on lap 14.  As Hall approached, Steele made the right moves in traffic to secure the victory.  Hall settled for a career best second ahead of Burkett, Anderson, Henson, Mix and Randy Simmons, the final lead lap finisher.

Mini Stock
Trophy Dash-Merissa Henson, Bob Burkett, Gary Anderson, David Steele.  Heat 1-David Steele, Bob Burkett, Andrew Hall, Randy Simmons, Mikey Johnson.  Heat 2-Gary Anderson, Dillen Lausen, Merissa Henson, Kristopher Mix, Patrick Stringer-Stine.  Main Event-David Steele, Andrew Hall, Bob Burkett, Gary Anderson, Merissa Henson, Kristopher Mix, Randy Simmons, Dillen Lausen, Mikey Johnson, Eric Hanson, Patrick Stringer-Stine, Dan Borror, Garrett Fredrickson.

King Returns To Winner's Circle
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 10...Taking the lead from Cody Peters on lap 17, Josh King went on to win the 20 lap SODCA Dwarf Car Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  The win was the third of the season for two time reigning champion King.  C. Peters' misfortune in traffic on the last lap dropped him out of the Top 5 as he spun, allowing championship hopeful Kalvin Morton to race by for second.  With throwaways entering the equation, the championship is still up for grabs between Brock Peters, Morton and Camden Robustelli heading into Coos Bay this Saturday night.

The Dwarf Cars had a nice turnout for their final appearance of the season at the track, and Morton won his six lap heat race ahead of Randy Slater.  B. Peters held off King to win his heat race, while Brock's son C. Peters won the third heat ahead of Ryan Smith.  The rapidly improving C. Peters won the six lap A Dash, while last Saturday's winner Chad Cardoza won the B Dash ahead of last Sunday's winner, Robustelli.

Smith bolted into the Main Event lead at the start ahead of Cardoza and C. Peters.  The lead five cars ran closely, and C. Peters made a big move on lap five to leap from third to first.  The yellow flag flew on lap seven for Don Gifford on the front stretch.  C. Peters led Robustelli on the restart, but a lap eight caution flag flew for a Chris Maupin spin in Turn 1.  The first restart attempt was botched as Bill Winter lost power on the front stretch and was rear ended by Mark Nielson.  C. Peters led Robustelli and Cardoza on the restart.  A lap 13 caution flag flew for a Paul Haslow spin in Turn 3.  Robustelli pressured C. Peters hard on the restart.  As the two came out of Turn 4 to complete the lap, there was contact.  Robustelli spun into the infield going into Turn 1, but a yellow flag for Gifford on the back stretch restored Robustelli back to the front.  C. Peters led the restart with King and Cardoza getting by Robustelli.  An outside move on the back stretch on lap 16 gained King the lead from C. Peters.  As King sped home to victory, C. Peters was fighting to hold onto second.  Exiting the final turn, C. Peters found a slower car in his path on the outside.  Morton raced by for second, and C. Peters spun.  King won the race ahead of Morton, Robustelli, Cardoza, B. Peters, Smith, Slater, Bud Lorenz and a disappointed C. Peters.

SODCA Dwarf Car
Heat 1-Kalvin Morton, Randy Slater, Bill Winter, Joe Sanders, Chris Maupin.  Heat 2-Brock Peters, Josh King, Chad Cardoza, Camden Robustelli, Bud Lorenz,  Heat 3-Cody Peters, Ryan Smith, Paul Haslow, Don Gifford, Mark Nielson.  A Dash-Cody Peters, Kalvin Morton, Josh King, Brock Peters, Ryan Smith.  B Dash-Chad Cardoza, Camden Robustelli, Paul Haslow, Bud Lorenz, Mark Nielson.  Main Event-Josh King, Kalvin Morton, Camden Robustelli, Chad Cardoza, Brock Peters, Ryan Smith, Randy Slater, Bud Lorenz, Cody Peters, Don Gifford, Chris Maupin, Paul Haslow, Bill Winter, Mark Nielson, Joe Sanders.

Medel Returns In Time For First Sport Mod Win
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 10...Leading all the way from his front row start, Mike Medel won his first 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Medel intended to miss the non point race as he flew out to Boone, Iowa to pit for friend and two time reigning champion Jorddon Braaten in the IMCA Nationals.  When Braaten suffered a wrist injury to end his week, Medel caught a flight back home and got back in time to battle David Marble and division newcomer Kalvin Morton for the victory.  Medel gained the point lead last week at the Lon Skinner Memorial Race and could claim the championship with a good performance next week.

David Marble won his second Trophy Dash after a good battle with A.J. Parker.  Marble continued his good evening with a heat race win in front of Morton.  Medel won his six lap heat in front of Toby Judd, who was making his season debut.  Medel raced into the Main Event lead at the start ahead of fellow font row starter Marble and Morton.  The lead three drivers pulled away, and Cottage Grove visitor Buddy McHargue and Judd battled for fourth.  Another Cottage Grove visitor, Brett Gill, hit the front wall for a yellow flag on lap 12. Judd's race also ended with mechanical woes.  Medel again  charged into the lead over Marble and Morton on the restart.  Though second and third were right behind him the whole time, Medel drove a great race and scored a satisfying victory ahead of Marble, Morton, McHargue and Parker.

IMCA Sport Modifieds
Trophy Dash-David Marble, A.J. Parker, Mike Medel.  Heat 1-Mike Medel, Toby Judd, Brett Gill, A.J. Parker.  Heat 2-David Marble, Kalvin Morton, Buddy McHargue.  Main Event-Mike Medel, David Marble, Kalvin Morton, Buddy McHargue, A.J. Parker, Brett Gill, Toby Judd.

Shields Grabs Third Hornets Victory
 At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 10...Joby Shields rolled to an impressive win in the 20 lap Hornets Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Shields' third win of the season came as a clean sweep after he also won the heat race and four lap Trophy Dash.  With a season best second place finish, Tim Hedges regained the point lead from Darrel Nelson Jr., who seemed to be struggling all night.

Shields started the night with his second four lap Trophy Dash win ahead of Hedges and then won the six lap heat race ahead of Jesse Merriman, who was making his first start in the division.  Shields raced into the Main Event lead at the start, and he steadily pulled away to a straightaway lead over Merriman as Hedges was working on what could have been his fifth third place finish.  On lap ten, Merriman's run in second came to an end with motor problems.  Shields led the restart ahead of Hedges and John Hoult.  Shields stretched his lead to about a half lap as he took the checkered flag in  victory.  Hedges was second ahead of Hoult and the struggling Nelson.

Hornets
Trophy Dash-Joby Shields, Tim Hedges, John Hoult, Derrel Nelson Jr.  Heat-Joby Shields, Jesse Merriman, Tim Hedges, John Hoult, Derrel Nelson Jr.  Main Event-Joby Shields, Tim Hedges, John Hoult, Derrel Nelson Jr., Jesse Merriman.

Bailey Hibbard Wins First Sprint Car Feature, Cox Wins Series At Southern Oregon Speedway

Bailey Hibbard Wins First Sprint Car Feature,
Cox Wins Series At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City Oregon...September 10...Bailey Hibbard won his first career 25 lap Extreme Sprint Car Main Event with a lap 20 pass on second place finisher Raquel Ivie at Southern Oregon Speedway Saturday night.  With his fourth place finish, Kinzer Cox won the $1000 championship in the three race Series.

IMCA Sport Modified point leader Mike Medel led all 20 laps with David Marble shadowing his every move in second.  It was Medel's first win of the season.

Two time reigning SODCA Dwarf Car champion Josh King won his third 20 lap Main Event with a lap 18 pass on Cody Peters.  Peters spun in traffic in the last turn as Camden Robustelli finished second.

David Steele won his fifth Mini Stock Main Event of the season.  Andrew Hall made a pair of impressive passes to finish a season best second.

Joby Shields won his third 20 lap Hornets Main Event.  Tim Hedges gained the point lead with a season best second place finish.

Young Bailey Hibbard won his first career Extreme Sprint Car Main Event.  Heat race winner Raquel Ivie led early with Bailey's father David Hibbard in pursuit.  With a puff of smoke on the back stretch on lap 13, D. Hibbard slowed and pitted in the Turn 4 infield.  Ivie continued to run cautiously behind two slower cars as B. Hibbard slowly gained ground.  On lap 20, B. Hibbard made an outside pass on the back stretch for the lead and brought it home to a well earned victory.  Ivie settled for second ahead of Cooper Desbiens, Triple Crown Series champion Kinzer Cox and Dusty Redmond.

Josh King won the 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event.  Cody Peters impressed by leading the race through 16 laps and several yellow flags.  Chad Cardoza surrendered second to Camden Robustelli on a lap nine restart.  Contact between Robustelli and C. Peters on lap 17 saw Robustelli spin in Turn 1, but a Don Gifford spin caused the yellow flag.  C. Peters led the next restart, but King made an outside pass on the back stretch for the lead.  King went on to win, and Peters spun after getting trapped behind a slower car in Turn 4. Kalvin Morton finished second ahead of Robustelli, Cardoza and Brock Peters.

Mike Medel won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event.  Medel jumped into the lead at the start with Trophy Dash winner David Marble and Kalvin Morton in close pursuit.  Even after the race's only yellow flag, Medel maintained his cool and held off the relentless pressure of Marble and Morton for the victory.  Buddy McHargue and A.J. Parker completed the Top 5.

David Steele collected his fifth 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event win.  Steele grabbed the lead at the start ahead of point leader Bob Burkett and Gary Anderson.  Andrew Hall made a low pass in Turn 4 of the third lap to grab third from Gary Anderson, and he made a similar move on lap five to take second from point leader Bob Burkett.  The race ran non stop without a yellow flag, and Steele was into slower traffic by the halfway point.  Hall cut into Steele's lead, but Steele prevailed at the end.  Burkett won a battle with Anderson for third as Trophy Dash winner Merissa Henson finished fifth.

Joby Shields won the 20 lap Hornets Main Event.  Shields won the heat race and Trophy Dash for a clean sweep.  Jesse Merriman battled Tim Hedges for second, but he broke while holding the spot on lap ten.  Hedges had second at that point, but he finished a distant second to the flying Shields.  John Hoult debuted a new car with a third place finish ahead of incoming point leader Darrel Nelson Jr.

Racing continues at Southern Oregon Speedway next week with IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Modifieds in action along with Open Stock Cars, Super 4's and Hornets.  For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Extreme Sprint Cars Come To Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...On the heels of last week's IMCA Modified excitement at Southern Oregon Speedway, the third round of the Extreme Sprint Car Triple Crown Series comes to town this Saturday night. Also joining the program will be the Sport Modifieds, SODCA Dwarf Cars, Mini Stocks and the Hornets.

At a couple of other tracks in Oregon, the Extreme Sprint Car division has taken hold. The idea behind this Winged Sprint Car class is to make the division more affordable to racers on a budget. There's another interesting phenomenon taking taking place. In the Medford Area, there are several racers putting race cars together for this class. Recently, Top 5 Mini Stock point runner Merissa Henson got a car. Merissa has raced Outlaw Karts for several years. There are a couple of other Outlaw Kart teams putting cars together for next season as well.

Several teams from the Medford area have expressed an interest in starting the Extreme Sprint Car division at the track, and that includes David Hibbard. Hibbard has won the Extreme Sprint Car Championship at Cottage Grove Speedway, and he was on his way to doing so again this season when he turned the wheel of his car over to his young son Bailey, who was without a ride after blowing his motor the week before.

Establishing this class in Medford is the more important goal to the older Hibbard.  "I think it's needed here, " Hibbard explained.  "There are a lot of drivers who want to go Sprint Car racing, but they can't afford to build a competitive car.  It's gotten pretty expensive.  The motor rules in this class are a little more reasonable.  It's allowed us to field a second car."

Earlier this season, David made an appearance in a Pennzoil Winged Sprint Car race and made a surprise pass on Jake Wheeler late for an exciting win. The realty is, he wants to get back to racing in front of his home crowd again. Because he wants to see the Extreme Sprint Car class get dates on the schedule in 2017, Hibbard put together an end of the season three race series.

The Cottage Grove Speedway season came to a close two weeks ago, and it doubled as the Triple Crown Series opener  Ricky Ashley won that race ahead of D. Hibbard and Kinzer Cox.  Coos Bay Speedway hosted Round #2 last week, and Hibbard won a photo finish with Cox for the thrilling victory. The race this week is for all the marbles. Thanks to some generous sponsorship, the series has a $1,000 championship.  Hibbard leads Cox by 15 points with another past Cottage Grove champion, Raquel Ivie, third in the standings.

Not only is David hoping this race will open the door for the division to race more often at Southern Oregon Speedway, he is also hoping this mini series will become an annual tradition.  "I think that there is enough interest in what we're doing here that this class can be successful at this track, " Hibbard predicted.  "The racing is close and competitive.  I think the fans see that every time we're on the track.  Most of the drivers have a real shot at winning on any given night, and that can happen here too."

Joining David and his son Bailey Hibbard for this race will be some of the top drivers in the movement, including two time reigning champion Patrick Dills and Kinzer Cox.  Another Extreme Sprint Car champion, Raquel Ivie will be coming. Two of the young guns of the division, Camden Robustelli and Jeffrey Hudson, are also among those expected for this race. Robustelli won a race at Cottage Grove this year, and Hudson is currently second in the Pennzoil Winged Sprint Car point race in his rookie season.  Cooper Desbiens, Don Waddell and newcomer Steve Smith are others anticipated for this race.

The Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association has been very busy this year racing all over Oregon and even into parts of Washington and California. At this point in the season, the two stars in the championship battle have been Brock Peters and Kalvin Morton. Unofficially, Peters leads as he has won four races at Southern Oregon Speedway. Morton has three wins in Yreka and picked up another win at Coos Bay Speedway recently.

Fans are generally treated to some close action on the race track with Morton, B. Peters, two time champion Josh King, Chad Cardoza, Ryan Smith and young Cody Peters among the drivers doing battle. Another driver who makes things exciting is double division racer Camden Robustelli, who is currently one of the Top 3 drivers in the standings this year after finishing second in points last year.  Robustelli won last Sunday's race and will be out to make it two in a row.

The Sport Modified division is running what will be considered a non point race with IMCA rules. Due to the IMCA rules restricting any tracks from running a point race while the IMCA has their Boone, Iowa Nationals event this weekend, a point race was not possible. Also, two of the top stars of the division, Jorddon Braaten and new point leader Mike Medel, are at the big race.  Braaten is making his first start there while Medel volunteered to be part of his pit crew. These two drivers are close competitors on the track and good friends off the track.

Though there are no points on the line, there is still the bragging rights of winning the race.. Drivers we could be seeing this week include impressive rookie David Mable, A.J. Parker, Tony Bartell, Willie McFall, Mike Johnson, Jon Rouden and Rich McCoy.

Points are on the line in the Mini Stock division, and three time winner Bob Burkett can clinch his first career championship with a good finish this week. Bob has finished second four times in the point battle through the years, and he has won many races during that time.  Likewise, 2014 champion Gary Anderson can lock up second in points with a good finish. Anderson was on fire last time as he swept the heat race, Trophy Dash and his second Main Event of the year.

Relieved to be out of the championship battle after winning the Yreka title last year, David Steele is nonetheless climbing rapidly in points after a late start. With four feature wins, at times Steele seems unbeatable. He has a shot at third, which is currently held by Andrew Hall by just two points over Merissa Henson.  Steele is just nine points out of third. There is a whole field of hungry racers vying to become the first driver not named Burkett, Anderson or Steele to win a Main Event at Southern Oregon Speedway this year. Last year, Anderson, Burkett and David Marble were the only winners at the track.

It's still a work in progress in the Hornets division, but the numbers show the class is having its best average in its three year existence. The racing has been close between the drivers who have shown up. Joby Shields and Derrel Nelson Jr. each have two wins, and Nelson leads a close point battle with Tim Hedges and John Hoult. All four of these competitors are anticipated this week along with Heather Menzel newcomer Jordan Hull.. The Hornets are the economical entry point into racing at Southern Oregon Speedway as they can cost less than $1,000 to go racing.

It will be an exciting night of racing at Southern Oregon Speedway with Sprint Cars in action. Gates open at 5 p.m. with the first race starting at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $12 with Juniors and Seniors $6. Children 5 and under are free. Luck On Hogge's Side In Fifth Lon Skinner Memorial Win

Luck On Hogge's Side In Fifth Lon Skinner Memorial Win

White City, Oregon...Bobby Hogge led the final eight laps to score a $5,000 victory in the Lon Skinner Memorial 100 Sunday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Darrell Hughes II led early, surrendered the lead to Jeff Olschowka on lap 38 and regained the on lap 61 when problems sidelined Olschowka.  Hughes led Hogge from then until trouble lapping a slower car ended his race on lap 92.  Hogge led two late restarts for his fifth career victory in the big IMCA Modified race.  Reno, Nevada's Jake Holland was a $2,500 second and Cottage Grove Speedway star Eric Ashley was a $1,500 third.

Howard Law won a caution flag filled 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event.  The 2015 champion at his home track in Marysville held off two time Medford champion Dwayne Melvin for the victory in a close battle.

Camden Robustelli started on the front row and led all the way for his second 25 lap Dwarf Car Main Event win.  Point leader Brock Peters made a move into second on lap 14 and would chase Robustelli the rest of the way.

It was patience that paid off for Bobby Hogge IV in his big 100 lap IMCA Modified victory.  Hogge drew a fourth row starting spot for the race as Darrell Hughes II and Saturday night winner Jeremy Richey shared the front row.  Hughes led Richey through a pair of early caution periods.  Richey faded on lap 25 as Quincy, CA racer Jeff Olschowka and Jake Mayden emerged as contenders.  A lap 38 restart allowed Olschowka the opportunity to take the lead as Hughes and Mayden were second and third at the mid race fuel break.  Hogge was fifth at that point.

Olschowka continued to lead when racing resumed, but his race ended in disappointment on lap 61.  Hogge made a move into third moments before Olschowka's misfortune, and Hughes led Hogge and Mayden on the next restart.  Hogge stayed close behind Hughes, who seemed unphased by the pressure.  Hughes led until trouble lapping a slower car ended his race on lap 92.  This opened the door for Hogge to take over.  Mayden was caught up in the Hughes caution flag.  Hogge led Jake Holland and Eric Ashley on the restart, and they ran in that order to the checkered flag.  Shawn Natenstedt and Jesse Williamson rounded out the Top 5 in the marathon race.

Howard Law won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event.  Law won the A Dash to earn the pole for what would be a caution flag filled race.  Law led second place finisher Dwayne Melvin through almost every restart for the $600 victory.  Californian Anthony Giuliani ran third for the first half of the race before falling back.  Marysville visitor Alan Furuta, Rich McCoy and Yreka point leader Jimmy Lipke made up the reminder of the Top 5 at the checkered flag.

Camden Robustelli won the 25 lap Dwarf Car Main Event.  Robustelli had A Dash winner Cody Peters shadowing his every move for 10 laps until Cody's race ended for a lap 10 caution flag.  Saturday winner Chad Cardoza took up the chase in second until Brock Peters raced by on lap 14.  B. Peters gave it a good run, but the flying Robustelli was too much to overcome.  Josh King made a late pass for third as Cardoza settled for fourth ahead of Randy Slater.

Racing returns next week with the final round of the Sprint Car Triple Crown Series, Dwarf Cars, Mini Stocks, Sport Modifieds and Hornets.  For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Richey Opens Skinner Memorial Weekend With Preliminary Victory

Richey Opens Skinner Memorial Weekend
With Preliminary Victory

White City, Oregon...Jeremy Richey won the 25 lap Preliminary Main Event for the IMCA Modifieds Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Richey earned the pole for the race with his Trophy Dash win, and his preliminary win locked him into the big $5000 to win race on Sunday along with the rest of the Top 10 finishers.  B Main winner Bobby Hogge IV made a late charge to finish second ahead of Duane Cleveland.

Bob Nelsen took the lead from Trophy Dash winner Dwayne Melvin on a lap 11 restart and went on to win the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event.  Shane DeVolder made a late charge to finish second ahead of Rich McCoy.

Chad Cardoza took the lead from Cody Peters on the second lap and then held off the younger Peters for his first 20 lap SODCA Dwarf Car Main Event win of the season.  Point leader Brock Peters finished third.

Jeremy Richey won the 25 lap IMCA Modified Preliminary Main Event with a flag to flag romp to the checkered flag.  The group ran two sets of four heat races that had no repeat winners.  An eight lap Trophy Dash was held for the top nine heat race point earners, and Richey used his win to earn the pole for the night's $600 to win Main Event.  Only one yellow flag slowed the pace, and Richey led all the way to the victory.  Bobby Hogge IV had to run the 20 lap B Main, and he won that race.  Hogge started ninth in the Main Event and finally managed to take second from Duane Cleveland on lap 15.  Richey held a 3.5 second lead at that point, and Hogge cut it down to half a second by the time the checkered flag waved.  Cleveland finished third ahead of Mark Wauge and Nick Trenchard.

Bob Nelsen won his second 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event of the season.  Two time champion Dwayne Melvin won both of his heat races and had the pole for the Main Event thanks to his Trophy Dash win.  Melvin seemed to be on his way to victory as he led he first ten laps of the Main Event.  A lap 10 yellow flag proved to be his undoing.  Nelsen grabbed the lead on the restart and led the rest of the way for the impressive victory.  14 year Shane DeVolder made a late charge to finish second ahead of previous race winner Rich McCoy, Mike Johnson and Keith Foux.

Chad Cardoza finally broke through for his first 20 lap SODCA Dwarf Car feature win of the season.  Cardoza grabbed the lead from Cody Peters on lap 2 and led the rest of the way for the satisfying victory.  C. Peters battled with A Dash winner Camden Robustelli during the first 10 laps before grabbing the position for good.  As Cardoza won, C. Peters was a strong second ahead of his father and point leader, Brock Peters, Robustelli and Josh King.

The IMCA Modifieds run the 100 lap, $5000 to win Lon Skinner Memorial Race on Sunday with IMCA Sport Modifieds and Dwarf Cars again running full programs.

Big Money On The Line In 21st Annual Lon Skinner Memorial Race

Southern Oregon Speedway Racing Discussion
Can Be Heard HERE

Big Money On The Line In 21st Annual
Lon Skinner Memorial Race

White City, Oregon...When Southern Oregon Speedway was opened in 1996 by John Skinner, a plaque was laid at the entrance in memory of the man who inspired him.  That same year, the track's cornerstone race, the Lon Skinner Memorial, was launched.  John wanted to pay tribute to his father and make it a weekend of great racing and celebration.

This Saturday and Sunday, the 21st Annual Lon Skinner Memorial race comes to the fast  one-third mile clay oval.  Some of the best racers on the West Coast will compete for the biggest purse for IMCA Modifieds anywhere on the West Coast.  With $5,000 to win and a minimum of $500 to start the Sunday Main Event, track prep guru Jim Rogers has been working to give the racers the best racing surface possible.

The Saturday Preliminary Day will offer heat races, preliminary mains and a $600 to win and $100 to start Main Event that will lock the top finishers into Sunday's big money race.  It makes Sunday a less stressful experience for the front runners as they know going into the day that they are already in.  These drivers will run a special Fast Dash to determine the lineup for the front half of the 24 car Main Event.  The rest of the starting lineup will be determined by who transfers from the preliminary mains.

Leading the charge for the big money will be the race's defending champion and four time winner, Bobby Hogge IV.  The Hogge name has been synonymous with winning for decades, and Bobby has won some of the biggest races and championships out there.  Among Hogge's many accomplishments are his two NASCAR Regional championships in 1996 and 1997.  Hogge has won somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 Main Events in his illustrious career.

Hogge isn't the only Californian coming to town for a shot at the money.  Two time race winner Richard Papenhausen and Duane Cleveland are two past Chico Silver Dollar Speedway champions who will make their presence known this weekend.  Both have scored feature wins at Antioch Speedway this year, where Papenhausen is the Late Model point leader.  Richard is the only driver who has competed in all 20 Lon Skinner Memorial races, and he is a two time winner.

Several local competitors will be there in an effort to keep the winner's prize in Southern Oregon.  Leading that charge are Brian Poppa, Mark Wauge and Nick Trenchard.  All three have won IMCA Modified championships, and Wauge has won more than anybody at Southern Oregon Speedway with six titles.  He's leading the point race going into this big race in the hopes of scoring his second Lon Skinner Memorial win.  Trenchard is also a one time winner of the big race while Poppa has three wins.

Drivers will be coming from everywhere, and the pre entry list includes past Susanville, CA champion Chris Olexiewixcz, Antioch, CA Speedway stars Chester Kniss and Norm Boeck, Shasta and Yreka veteran Stan Gunderson, Top 5 Cottage Grove racer Tyler Smith and Manteca, CA racer Darrell Hughes II.  Hughes finished second to Wauge in the Roger Haudenshild Tribute race back in May.

Southern Oregon Speedway mainstays like two time champion Albert Gill, James Welschonse, Duane Orsburn, Bo Shields, Zach Fettinger and Jesse Bailey are also confirmed from a list of roughly 30 drivers already committed.  It is anticipated that 50 or more drivers will compete this weekend.  Sunday being a point race, it could also shake up the championship battle as Orsburn and Welshonse still have their sights set on Wauge with two races remaining.

As if two nights of exciting IMCA Modified action isn't enough, the IMCA Sport Modifieds and SODCA Dwarf Cars will run two complete programs on Saturday and Sunday.  The Sport Modified field will be bolstered by a group of Northern California visitors, led by Jimmy Ford, who won the Sport Mod Main Event on Lon Skinner Memorial weekend two years ago.

The points will be effected by the anticipated absence of two time reigning IMCA Sport Modified champion Jorddon Braaten, who is competing in his first IMCA Nationals event in Boone, Iowa next week.  Braaten's car is already loaded and on the way.  He was invited to bring his car in California State champion Fred Ryland's trailer, and it was too good of a deal to pass up.

Unless Braaten secures another ride and flies back to Iowa after the race, the door is open for Mike Medel and David Marble to race past him in the standings.  Medel had a strong third place finish in last week's race.  Both of these drivers are still looking for their first wins of the year, while Rich McCoy won impressively last Saturday night.

The two nights of racing will offer some of the best IMCA Modified and Sport Modified racing you will find anywhere in the state.  Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. both nights.  General admission starts at $15 on Saturday and $20 on Sunday, Seniors and Veterans are $12 on Saturday and $18 on Sunday and Kids ages 6-12 are $10 on Saturday and $15 on Sunday.  Two day discounts and reserved seating is also available.  For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.
