Fettinger Wins Third IMCA Modified Main Event 

At Southern Oregon Speedway

Zach Fettinger #88 is a player in the IMCA Modified championship battle following his third straight win.

White City, Oregon...July 21...Racing into the lead from the start, Zach Fettinger scored his third 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event win of the season Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. In the process, Fettinger becomes the first driver to win more than two Main Events in one season in this division since 2015.

Fettinger and new point leader Albert Gill were the six lap heat race winners, and Gill also won the four lap Trophy Dash. The Main Event was restarted after a tangle in Turn 3 involving Stan Gunderson, James Welshonse and Dave Duste Jr. Fettinger led Jantzen Knips and Duane Orsburn on the restart, and a yellow flag flew on lap two for a Chris Silva spin. Silva spun for another yellow flag on lap 4, and Fettinger continued to lead Knips and Orsburn on the next restart. A caution flag waived for debris on the track on lap eight, and Orsburn slipped past Knips for second on the restart. Silva spun one more time in Turn 2 on lap nine and was black flagged as per the track's three yellow flag rule. Fettinger  led Orsburn and Knips on the restart, and Gill made a low pass in Turn 2 to take fourth from Welshonse on lap 14. Fettinger was setting a good pace up front and lapping slower cars. He took the white flag, but when Gill spun in Turn 2, Fettinger received a yellow flag instead of a checkered flag the next time by. On the one lap shootout, Fettinger led Orsburn for the 1-2 finish. Behind them, Knips was spun out and hit in Turn 2. Gill finished third, followed by Knips, Welshonse, David Satterfield, Brett Provost, Gunderson, Silva and Duste.

Rodgers Wins IMCA Sport Modified Main Event In First Southern Oregon Speedway Visit

Chico, CA visitor Tyler Rodgers #44 made his first appearance at Southern Oregon Speedway and won the IMCA Sport Modified Main Event.

White City, Oregon...July 21...Taking the lead from Jimmy Lipke on a lap four restart, Tyler Rodgers went on to win the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. He becomes the sixth different winner in six races. This was the first appearance by the Chico, California visitor.

The night started with Rodgers and Lipke each winning their respective six lap heat races. Point leader David Marble picked up the win in the four lap Trophy Dash. Lipke raced into the early lead ahead of Tony Duste, but Rodgers took second from Duste on lap two. A lap three caution flag waved when Jacob Hoppes spun. Rodgers got a good run on Lipke on the restart and moved underneath him in Turn 2 to take the lead. Hoppes brought out another caution flag on lap four, and a multi-car crash botched the first restart attempt. Rodgers led Lipke and Mike Medel on the restart. Rodgers quickly built up a straightaway advantage over Lipke as Medel ran closely behind Lipke in the battle for second. A tangle involving Willie McFall and Steve Lysinger brought out the final caution flag on lap 16. Rodgers led Lipke and Medel on the restart and the lead three remained the same to the checkered flag. Previous winner Branden Wilson finished fourth, followed by David Marble, Tony Duste, Toby Judd, Tony Bartell, Michael Rule and McFall.

Cardoza Scores Dwarf Car Feature Win
At Southern Oregon Speedway

Chad Cardoza #71 ended his victory drought and kept his SODCA Dwarf Car championship hopes alive with a much needed Main Event win.

White City, Oregon...July 21...Chad Cardoza scored the victory in the 20 lap Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Cardoza becomes the sixth different winner in the seven races held at the speedway so far and the eighth different winner on the circuit.

The 20 Dwarf Car field ran three six lap heat races, and Cardoza lost his heat race to a last turn pass by Mason Lewman. Kalvin Morton and reigning champion Brock Peters were the other heat winners. Incoming point leader Cody Peters won the six lap A Dash,  and Josh King won the eight lap B Dash.

A multi-car crash in Turn 2 forced a complete restart, and Cardoza led a lap before another caution flag flew. Cardoza led Lewman and King on restart. King and Lewman were battling fiercely for second and exchanged the position several times during the first seven laps. A low pass in Turn 4 of the fifth lap put King into second, and a caution flag fell on lap seven for a Brett James spin in Turn 4. Cardoza led King and Lewman on the restart, but Lewman made an inside pass in Turn 4 of the ninth lap to regain second from King. A Turn 2 spin by Cody Peters forced a lap nine caution flag. Cardoza led Lewman on the restart as Brock Peters gained third from King. Lewman made an outside pass on the front stretch on lap 11 to briefly take the lead from Cardoza. However, Cardoza made an inside pass in Turn 3 of the 13th lap to regain the lead position. Lewman headed pit side shortly thereafter as Morton was now second ahead of Brock Peters. Peters slipped past Morton for second on lap 16 with Camden Robustelli following closely into third. Brock Peters gave it a valiant effort, but he was unable to make the move as Cardoza scored a well-earned victory. Robustelli settled for third, followed by King, Cody Peters, Morton, Steve Walker, Fred Hay, Kaycee Sheeler and Ryan Smith.

The Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association will be hosting the Western States Dwarf Car Association Nationals event at Southern Oregon Speedway on August 3rd and 4th. The JOAT Labs Hornets will join in support of the Friday portion of the event, while the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars and Valley Store-All Late Model Lites will be a part of the Saturday show. Eaton Adds To Point Lead With Third Valley Store-All Late Model Lites Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

Point leader Charlie Eaton #5 won his third Valley Store-All Late Model Lites Main Event.

White City, Oregon...July 21...Taking the lead from 2016 champion Lee Doty on the sixth lap, Charlie Eaton went on to win his third Valley Store-All Late Model Lites Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Eaton is the point leader, and this enabled him to increase his advantage over Greg Arnold, who finished fourth.

Doty was working on a clean sweep effort as he won both the six lap heat race and four lap Trophy Dash. Doty had the pole position next to reigning champion Bob Burkett, but Burkett only started the event as he had radiator issues. Doty raced into the early lead ahead of Eaton and Burkett. Burkett pitted on lap two as Arnold settled into third. Danny Prewitt jumped behind the wheel of the #99 car and took third from Arnold on lap four, and a Turn 2 pass gained Eaton the lead from Doty on lap six. Eaton set a good pace up front and brought it home to a satisfying win, followed by Doty, Prewitt, Arnold, Eric Aos, Dusty Aos and Burkett.

Minter Wins Thrilling OTRO Hardtop Main Event 

At Southern Oregon Speedway

Mark Minter #33 won his second OTRO Hardtop Main Event.

White City, Oregon...July 21...Taking the lead from Justin Krossman on the white flag lap, Mark Minter scored his second straight 15 lap OTRO Hardtop Main Event win Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Minter ended Krossman's bid for a clean sweep as Krossman won both the four lap Trophy Dash and six lap heat race.

Krosman set the early pace ahead of Chris Mehrer, but 2016 PRA Hardtop champion Greg Hickman led Jamie Britton around Mehrer for second and third a lap later. Britton spun in Turn 2 for a lap two caution flag, and Dean Cast headed for the pits. Krossman led Hickman and Minter on the next restart, but Hickman spun in Turn 2 and collected Minter for a lap three caution flag. Krossman led Jay Smith and Britton on the next restart. A lap five caution flag flew for Mehrer, and Krossman continued to set the pace on the restart as Minter raced past Britton for second. Britton and Hickman tangled in Turn 2 for the final caution flag on lap seven. Krossman continued to lead Minter and Britton, but Hickman made a backstretch pass on Britton for third on at nine. Minter moved in and began to challenge Krossman for the lead in the waning laps, and an inside pass at the start-finish line as the white flag waved gained Minter the lead. Minter held off Krossman on the final lap for the well-earned victory. Hickman settled for third, followed by Britton, Smith, Mehrer and Cast.

White City, Oregon...July 20...Point leader Trevor Grimes returned to the Winner's Circle in the 20 lap 250 Kart Main Event Friday night at Little Southern Oregon Speedway. This was his third win of the season and broke him out a two race slump. Grimes and Brenden Bartlett picked up eight lap heat race victories and shared the front row for the Main Event. Bartlett was subbing for Brionna Fuller, who is still unable to compete in her Cage Kart. Grimes settled into the lead at the start ahead of Bartlett and previous winner Vinny DeBenedetti. DeBenedetti spun in Turn 2 for a lap 13 caution flag, moving Landon Green into third. The lead two karts ran a good race up front until Bartlett spun in Turn 2 for a lap 18 caution flag. Grimes led the restart and paced the final laps for the win. Green finished second, followed by Cadyn Smith, DeBenedetti, Taylor Fuller and Bartlett. During the second heat race, Reece Slyter took a nasty tumble on the front straight away and made contact with the front wall after contact with another kart. Fortunately, he was uninjured and walked away from the wreckage.

Point leader Keaton Augustine scored his third straight 15 lap Box Stock Main Event victory. Augustine and Jacob James were the eight lap heat race winners. Augustine jumped into the lead at the start of the Main Event with Ryan Hirschbock in close pursuit. James settled into third. After picking up three straight wins in the Beginners Box Stock class, reigning Beginners Box Stock champion Malachi Johnson made his Box Stock division debut and settled into fourth place ahead of Taylor Fuller. Fuller got by Johnson for fourth on lap 10. Augustine ran smooth and consistent laps and kept Hirschbock behind him for a well-earned victory. James settled for third, followed by Fuller, Johnson and Kiley Grimes.

Austin Bartholomew made the trip from Crescent City, California and left with the 12 lap Beginners Box Stock Main Event victory. Uriah Sanders and Bartholomew picked up the eight lap heat race wins, and Sanders jumped into the early Main Event lead ahead of Bartholomew and Grant Proctor. The lead three karts began a good battle at the front of the pack, and Hunter Granger brought out a lap four caution flag. Sanders continued to lead Bartholomew and Proctor on the restart. Bartholomew finally made a Turn 2 pass on Sanders for the lead on lap nine. As Bartholomew sped to the victory, Sanders held off Proctor for a season-best second place finish. Shailene Horn was a solid fourth, followed by Carson Henson, Jayme DeBenedetti, Bentleigh Chapman and Granger.

Steve Rambo scored the win in the 12 lap UAS Speedway Kart Main Event. Larry Fuller and Ed Grubb were the eight lap heat race winners, and Fuller settled into the early Main Event lead ahead of Rambo and Grubb. The lead three karts ran closely at the midway point of the race, and Ken Gaines brought out a lap six caution flag. Larry Fuller pitted, and Brionna Fuller spun to botch the first restart attempt. She pitted briefly and returned for the restart a lap later as Rambo led Grubb and Johnny Hoult. Grubb had problems and pitted on lap nine, leaving Rambo and Hoult as the only lead lap karts. Rambo won by a comfortable margin ahead of team-mate Hoult. Brionna Fuller rallied for a third place finish, followed by Lori Fuller, Grubb, Larry Fuller, Gaines and Bobby Hirschbock.

The track introduced a Novice Beginners Box Stock classification for a few of the drivers who are just coming to speed in their first starts, and Bhaltair Edwards won their ten lap feature. Edwards and Isaac Grimes collected the six lap heat race wins, and Edwards raced into the Main Event lead at the start ahead of Grimes and Caleb Ranney. Grimes made a high pass and Turn 1 of the fifth lap to take the lead from Edwards, and he seemed poised to get the win. However, Edwards made a rally on the last lap and passed Grimes on the outside as they took the checkered flag. Edwards, Grimes and Ranney all took the checkered flag in order.

Zach Fettinger #88 is a player in the IMCA Modified championship battle following his third straight win.

White City, Oregon...July 21...Zach Fettinger won the 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  He has won the last three races in which he started.  Fettinger took the lead on the second lap and led through several caution periods and a last lap restart.  Duane Orsburn was a season best second ahead of Albert Gill, Jantzen Knips and James Welshonse.

Chico, CA visitor Tyler Rodgers #44 made his first appearance at Southern Oregon Speedway and won the IMCA Sport Modified Main Event.

Chico, California visitor Tyler Rodgers turned in a dominant performance in winning the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event.  Rodgers took the lead from Jimmy Lipke on lap seven and led the rest of the way in victory.  Lipke settled for second ahead of Mike Medel, Branden Wilson and David Marble.

Chad Cardoza #71 ended his victory drought and kept his SODCA Dwarf Car championship hopes alive with a much needed Main Event win.

Chad Cardoza won his first 20 lap SODCA Dwarf Car Main Event of the season.  Cardoza led from the start and lost the lead briefly midway through the race to Mason Lewman.  However, Cardoza regained the lead a lap later and held off reigning champion Brock Peters for the win.  Camden Robustelli, Josh King and point leader Cody Peters rounded out the Top 5.

Point leader Charlie Eaton won his third Valley Store-All Late Model Lites Main Event.  Lee Doty led the first five laps before Eaton raced by on the back stretch for the lead.  Eaton held off Doty the rest of the way to win.  Danny Prewitt finished third, followed by Greg Arnold and Eric Aos.

Mark Minter #33 won his second OTRO Hardtop Main Event.

Mark Minter won the 15 lap OTRO Hardtop Main Event.  After winning the heat and Trophy Dash, Justin Krossman led most of the Main Event.  Minter gained second on a lap five restart and proceeded to move on to Krossman's rear bumper.  Minter tried high and low until pulling down low and beating Krossman back to the white flag.  Minter led the final lap to win ahead of Krossman. Greg Hickman, Jamie Britton and Jay Smith.

The track takes a week off before returning for the two day WSDCA Dwarf Car Nationals on August 3rd and 4th.  The Friday portion of the show includes JOAT Labs Hornets, and the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars and Valley Store-All Late Model Lites will be running on Saturday night.  For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

White City, Oregon... July 20...Trevor Grimes captured his third 20 lap 250 Kart Main Event win Friday night at little Southern Oregon Speedway. The reigning champion and current point leader has been in a slump lately, but he rebounded by winning one of his heat races and withstanding some serious pressure from Brendon Bartlett throughout most of the race. When Bartlett spun late, Landon Green took up pursuit, but Grimes held him off for the victory. Cadyn Smith managed to get his kart fixed after a crash in the first heat race and finished a respectable third, followed by Vinny DeBenedetti and Taylor Fuller.

Point leader Keaton Augustine continued his string of impressive efforts with his third straight 15 lap Box Stock Main Event victory. Augustine won one of his heat races and withstood some serious pressure from Ryan Hirschbock all the way to the checkered flag in the Main Event. Heat race winner Jacob James settled for third, followed Beginners Box Stock graduate Malachi Johnson and Taylor Fuller.

With Johnson moving up from the Beginners ranks, it meant a new winner and point leader would emerge from the night. New point leader Uriah Sanders set the pace during the early stages of the 12 lap Main Event with some serious pressure coming from Crescent City visitor Austin Bartholomew and Grant Proctor. Bartholomew made his winning pass on the outside on lap eight and took it to the checkered flag ahead of Sanders, Grant Proctor, Shailene Horn and Carson Henson.

A special 10 lap race was held for the Novice Beginners Box Stock drivers, and they put on an entertaining show for the fans all night. Heat race winners Isaac Grimes and Bhaltair Edwards exchanged the lead twice during the Main Event. Coming out of Turn 4, Edwards got up a good head of steam and beat Grimes back to the checkered flag for the win. Caleb Ranney finished third.

Steve Rambo shook off his recent bad luck to win the 12 lap UAS Speedway Karts Main Event. Teammate Johnny Hoult finished a solid second ahead of Brionna Fuller, Lori Fuller and Ed Grubb.

At Southern Oregon Speedway This Weekend

White City, Oregon...Southern Oregon Speedway heads into its final race of July with an exciting five division show on the big track this Saturday night, featuring IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars, Valley Store-All Late Model Lites and OTRO Hardtops. On Friday night, little Southern Oregon Speedway will offer a full program of Outlaw Kart racing. It's a great opportunity for the fans to satisfy their need for speed before the one week break.

The Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association will be taking center Stage for the next couple of races. This weekend offers one final tune-up at the home track before the big Dwarf Car Nationals event on the first weekend of August. The Dwarf Cars have seen a resurgence of driver support, and it's led to a wide-open battle on the race track.

Last time out, Cody Peters scored his first feature win of the season. He now joins his father, Brock Peters, on the winner's list along with Kalvin Morton, Camden Robustelli, Josh King and Guy Tow. Robustelli and Morton are the only two-time winners on the circuit so far. While these drivers have claimed victories, Chad Cardoza, Ryan Smith and Fred Hay have been knocking on the door to victory. Hay has scored back-to-back Top 3 finishes, and Cardoza was shown as the point leader going into the most recent race.

The Dwarf Cars aren't the only division that has had a wide-open battle on the race track every week. IMCA Sport Modified competitors have been battling hard all season long for Main Event glory, and there have been no repeat winners to date. Wins have been earned by Justin McCreadie, Braxton Possinger, Branden Wilson, Fred Ryland and point leader David Marble. Marble has been very consistent this season. Following his third place finish last time out, he emerged with a 28 point lead over Willie McFall in the championship chase.

As Marble has begun to pull away, McFall has Tony Bartell, Wilson and Tony Duste all within five points of him in a close battle for second. Wilson won the most recent race by surprising race long leader Jimmy Lipke as he beat him back to the finish line with a last-lap pass. Lipke is rumored to be coming back to make another run at the win. Another driver planning to be there this week is two-time reigning champion Mike Medel, who had anything but a good race last time out. Both drivers are hoping for their first wins at the track this year, and others to watch for include Jesse Merriman, Danny Rule and rookie Brian Knorr.

In the IMCA Modified division, it's rumored that the point race will get a shake up as Nick Trenchard heads up north to make a run at a big payday. Trenchard has been known in recent years as somewhat of a bounty hunter with a knack for winning big races. In his absence, two-time champion Albert Gill is poised to take over the lead. However, Gill is hoping for a feature win. He has finished second twice this year, but second place isn't what he came to do. Another driver who has struggled a bit in recent weeks is seven time champion Mark Wauge. Wauge led early last time out before pitting. It turned out that he had a blown motor. This leaves the team going back to the drawing board once again. Zach Fettinger has been on a roll with two wins, and this has him just five points behind Wauge in the battle for third as David Satterfield is a surprising fourth. These two drivers are anticipated this week along with Jansen Knips, Bo Shields, Jeremy Ohlde and Andy Freeman.

Last time, Charlie Eaton became the first repeat winner of the Valley Store-All Late Model Lites division. It really looked like reigning champion Bob Burkett was going to get the win until contact between he and 2016 champion Lee Doty gave Eaton his opportunity to take the lead. In winning the race, Eaton increased his slim lead to just eight points over one-time winner Greg Arnold in the standings. Arnold will be hoping to rebound from bad luck last time out, and other drivers to watch for include Eric Aos, Dusty Aos, Terry Hadley and Krista Hadley.

The Old Time Racers of Oregon Hardtops return for their fourth appearance of the season. Mark Minter, Bill Trotter and Dusty Trotter count themselves as the feature winners so far. Lest anybody thinks these old time V6 powered cars that run on slick tires aren't being raced hard, Dusty Trotter's night ended early last time when he and Jay Smith crashed on the back stretch in a close battle for a Trophy Dash win. Smith has a pair of second place finishes and will be looking to get a win this week along with Justin Krossman.

The Friday night Outlaw Kart program has been ruled this season by the youngest of the kids. Malachi Johnson has rattled off three Beginners Box Stock wins in a row to take the lead in the championship battle ahead of Carson Henson. Last time out, Johnson and Mike Wheeler Jr had a spirited dual for the feature win. The Beginners class features kids from 5 to 8 years old. Keaton Augustine continues to lead the Box Stock race after back-to-back wins, and Vinny DeBenedetti is closing in fast on point leader Trevor Grimes after his second straight win. Add the UAS Speedway Karts and 500 Open Karts, and it should be a fun night at the little track on Friday. Racing starts at 7 p.m., and the $10 admission gets you pit access as well as seats in the bleachers.

Pit Stops

Last week was Kids Night at Southern Oregon Speedway, which meant a lot of cool things for the kids. Free Admission, for starters. Drawings for nine bike giveaways and 125 free Hot Wheels for the first kids to enter the grandstands. Making things a bit of a challenge was the fact that the weather was over 100 degrees. However, the show went on as scheduled.

Nathan Augustine saw his championship hopes get dealt a severe blow two races ago when he was taken out by a lapped car on the back straightaway. It was bad enough that his race ended at that point, but his chassis received too much damage for him to keep using that car. Fortunately, while his team was making arrangements to get a Late Model from Michigan, they were able to borrow the Don Garrett Jr ride for a race to maintain their points.

On Saturday night, Augustine returned with a new car, sporting a pink paint job. At the moment, Nathan's chief rival in the championship battle is John Dees, and Dees could possibly have the fastest car on the track right now. To illustrate that, Dees picked up wins in both the Trophy Dash and his heat race. He was coming in on a high note having won the July 4th race at Sunset Speedway as well as the Trophy Dash earlier that evening. But John wants to get a win at his home track.

With the Main Event destined to run at a rapid pace, the driver who got the best start would be set up as the driver to beat. Augustine got the jump, and Dees followed closely behind him. For 25 laps, both drivers ran the bottom groove and hit all of their marks. Dees kept taking looks down low, but he was unable to find his spot to make the move. He settled for his third second-place finish of the season as he gained more ground on Miles Deubert for second in the standings.

Augustine scored his second win of the season, but he knows the battle is far from over. He knows that John Dees still presents a big challenge for the championship. He also knows he's lucky to still be in the lead given the crash he had two races earlier. For these final races, Nathan knows he still needs to be on his A Game, or it could all slip away very easily.

The man giving John Dees his inspiration to go racing was his father, Bob Dees. Bob Dees won the 2016 championship, which is when John got to start racing with him after watching his father race very competitively in Late Models and Pro Stock through the years. Bob currently holds down the fifth position in the standings. Bob was a two-time feature winner last season, but he is still searching for his first win. On Saturday night, Bob enjoyed a spirited duel with Dave Foote for third, but Dees was just a little bit quicker in the end. Foote is still very much in the championship battle in fourth in the standings.

All was not well with the #38 car of Miles Deubert. Sometimes all you can do on a night like that is get your car to the checkered flag, which is what he did. Since winning the season opener, Miles has experienced some of the trials and tribulations that rookies face, but he continues to come out and give it his best with great enthusiasm. In the races ahead, he shouldn't be counted out in the quest for victory. He could still make a play for the championship as well.

The Mini Stock division has taken a bit of a beating this year. Two races into the season, there was a crash exiting Turn 2 in a heat race that destroyed the #007 car of Cameron Hall and forced 2013 champion Steve Goetz to miss a few races while his car was being reclipped. On Saturday night, we may have seen the last of the #0 car of Gary Anderson. The good news in all of this is the 2014 champion was uninjured. As the drivers were exiting Turn 4 during their heat race, there was some contact and Anderson veered into the front wall. Though he did hit the brakes, it wasn't quite enough to slow him down. The impact left the car with severe front-end damage.

Car count has been down in the Mini Stock division, but this is a trend that goes as far south as Yreka as well. Drivers sometimes hear the calling of other things in life, and their cars get parked for a while. Sometimes they return, and sometimes we don't see them again. Fortunately, there are a few drivers still willing to come out and go racing. Life has been calling Kristopher Mix. Having experienced the joys of fatherhood during the past year as well as a championship season, Mix finds himself working pretty hard these days to pay the bills and shows up late to go racing.

After back-to-back disappointing outings that saw him experience various mechanical issues, Mix finally put a decent night together with a third place finish. He was given a jump start infraction earlier in the race, but a yellow flag allowed him to serve his penalty. It didn't stop him from getting back to third. With Steve Goetz coming on strong lately, Mix needs to be at his best. Not to mention the fact that he's still in the hunt for second, which is currently held by Hunter Magnan.

Magnan got off to a good start this year, but the last couple of races have given him less than desired results. A spin late in the race last week saw him trying to make a charge back into a Trophy Dash qualifying position, only to be beat to the line by Garrett Fredrickson for fourth. Hunter knows he'll need to keep getting the good results. It's not only Mix that is in the sights of Steve Goetz. Hunter isn't that much further ahead of the two champions in second. For Goetz, the night was a solid effort as he won his heat race and finished second in both the Main Event and Trophy Dash. When it comes to who might be able to get the next feature win, it could be Goetz.

The star of the night was point leader David Steele. David has been hitting all of his marks so far this year, and he scored a clean sweep of heat, Trophy Dash and Main Event. This was his fifth win of the season, and there's still some debate about how many career wins David has at Southern Oregon Speedway. The mark is either 25 or 26, and 26 would put him at the top of the All Time win list with Jim Hill. David has won some 60 Main Events on the circuit, and his cars have won well over 100. He takes a lot of pride in the work he's done to help others be more competitive just as much as his own success.

The JOAT Labs Hornets division championship battle was shaken up just a little bit last week when Jason Stoutenburgh missed the races. He is still fixing his motor after the fire from the previous race, but he hopes to be back for the first race in August. With Stoutenburgh gone, the question was whether Ashtin Hedges could hold the lead or would he be overtaken by his father, Tim Hedges, or Bree Tritchler?

There was a hint of things to come when Ashtin's father set him up for the pass in the Trophy Dash and stole the win away. Tritchler also got by for second. Both Hedges finished second in their respective heat races, though the race for Ashtin against Dylan Irving was particularly close. Ashtin was very much in the hunt in the Main Event, but more mechanical problems reared their ugly head and dropped him from the lineup. The one consolation he could take from the bad night was that car count was low enough that the points damage wasn't as severe as it could have been.

For Tim Hedges, it seemed like smooth sailing at the front of the Main Event pack. He led a good portion of the race, but Tritchler put a move on him for the lead on lap 16. It was right at that moment when Zach Nelson had mechanical issues and stalled for a yellow flag. With no passing to the yellow flag, it reverted back to the lap when Tim Hedges was leading. Back in front, Tim led the rest of the way with Tritchler chasing him for her third consecutive second place finish. Tim Hedges emerged with the point lead, but Tritchler and Ashtin are still very close behind him. We've seen five different winners in six races, and it seems like Tritchler is poised to become the sixth.

Another driver we may need to keep an eye on is second generation racer Dylan Irving. Irving has had miserable luck during the past couple of weeks as he's finished last in both Main Events. His heat race win was a much needed confidence boost, but he wasn't done. His Main Event didn't start as well as he'd have liked, but he rallied and came back for a season-best third place finish. Another driver smiling after getting a good finish in fourth was Dylan Sauer. This was his best finish so far, and it also qualified him for the Trophy Dash at the next race on August 3rd.

Zach Nelson has been battling little problems here and there with his car, but he keeps coming back and giving it his best. He was optimistic coming into the night, and his heat race win made him a little bit nervous as he started on the front row of the Main Event. Unfortunately for Zach, there were more mechanical problems ahead as he didn't finish, but he still gained a little bit of ground in the standings and has a legitimate shot to move into the Top 5 in points. Saundra Hattrick got to do the driving in the #7 car that Brandon Wonsyld has been driving this year. She took it all the way to the checkered flag and ended up fifth.

The Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car division has been an interesting story. David Hibbard has been dominating the Main Event action. He's not even the driver who usually wins the Scramble to get the pole for the Main Event, but that doesn't stop him. Last week, it was Jeffrey Hudson picking up the win in the Scramble as well as his heat race. Hudson has been providing the competition in the standings back in second, and he had a second place feature finish earlier in the season. On this occasion, he led the race for nine laps before watching that familiar blue and white blur of Hibbard go racing by. David went on to post win #5 of the season as he added another point to his lead over Hudson, who settled for second.

Meanwhile, Blaine Cory continued his recent string of good runs. The top rookie in the field was coming off of back-to-back second place finishes. He made a move during the second half of the race around 2009 champion Charlie Thompson and brought it home to a third place finish. This gave him sole possession of third in the standings, and he has his sights set on second place Hudson. When it comes to who to bet on to beat Hibbard during his current streak, smart money might go on either Cory or Hudson.

You also shouldn't count out Charlie Thompson. Though he got off to a late start this year, his fourth place finish moved him much closer to fifth in the standings, which is currently held by Enrique Jaime. Jaime discovered a motor issue prior to the race two weeks ago, which forced him to miss that show. Unfortunately, the team still didn't have a motor and missed the most recent race as well. The team wants to make things just right and not rush back. The goal is Enrique's first career feature win, and when he comes back, you shouldn't count him out.

Bailey Hibbard has racked up five career feature wins at Southern Oregon Speedway, but this season has been a bit of a struggle. He's the only person keeping his father from six feature wins in a row, but his win at the second event is his only podium finish of the season so far. He also won the first two Scrambles. Bailey still got it back to the line in fifth last week, followed by Camden Robustelli. The younger Hibbard is still in contention for third in points, but he needs to step it up in the weeks ahead. We haven't seen Robustelli in his Sprint Car since his distributor issues earlier this season, but he opened the night by holding off David Hibbard to win his heat race. All in all, it wasn't a bad showing for the Dwarf Car star.

Southern Oregon Speedway is bracing for a big month in August that has marquee events lined up in succession. It starts off on August 3rd and 4th with the Western States Dwarf Car Nationals, continues the following week with the $2,000 to win Ironhead Winged 360 Sprint Car Nationals, follows that with the big Stock Car based Hall of Fame Night and ends the month with the Herz Precision Parts Cascade Wingless Sprint Car Challenge Race, paying $3,500 to win. If that's not enough, September kicks off with the R Charles Snyder Salute for IMCA Modifieds and Sport Modifieds on September 1st and 2nd. The Modifieds will be paying $5,000 to win.

Outlaw Kart Pit Stops

The Outlaw Kart program at Little Southern Oregon Speedway is four races into the season, and count is up slightly from last season. The drivers who are showing up seem to be showing up regularly, and the biggest boost has come in the Beginners Box Stock division. Malachi Johnson has won the last three races as he attempts to defend his championship. He is currently shown as the point leader, not too far ahead of reigning Yreka Indoor champion Carson Henson and Uriah Sanders. Henson has enjoyed back-to-back third place finishes.

The battle at the front of the pack has been intense in recent races. Last time out, Johnson and Mike Wheeler Jr enjoyed a spirited race through slower traffic, and Johnson had to make a four wide move down the front stretch to secure his win over the persistent Wheeler, who settled for his second straight runner-up finish.

This has also caused track officials to consider the possibility of having a Novice Beginners Box Stock race. There are a few competitors who are going at their own pace as they learn, but a few drivers have enough experience and confidence that they are getting after it pretty good. The thought process is pretty simple. It would make it safer for the drivers with more experience, and it would make the newer drivers a bit more comfortable as they learn. This is a possibility for Friday night's race.

The Box Stock division has four drivers who have run nose-to-tail for the past two Main Events in a good battle up front. On both occasions, point leader Keaton Augustine has left with the victory, but one little mistake was all it would have taken for Jacob James to make his move. James has finished second these past two races as he looks for his first Box Stock win. Ryan Hirschbock and Taylor Fuller, who finished a close third and fourth last time out, are both feature winners this year. Not to be forgotten in the mix, 2016 Beginners champion Kiley Grimes was a lead lap fifth last time.

The 250 Kart program has been interesting despite the lower than hoped for count. Reigning champion Trevor Grimes is finding it anything but easy these days. Second generation racer Vinny DeBenedetti appears to have his number. Vinny has been willing to put his Kart anywhere he needs to in his quest for victory, and he's left the last two races with the winners $100 bill and trophy to show for his efforts. He's second in the standings and keeping the pressure on Grimes.

Another driver looking good with a pair of heat race wins is Cadyn Smith. Smith won the Yreka Indoor championship during the off-season, but he's hoping to get a feature win at his home track. Division rookie Taylor Fuller has been challenged with this move up, but he's currently third in the points and learning every race. Older sister Brionna Fuller is still recovering from a broken arm, but we hope to see her back as soon as she is able.

We're not sure who might show up to run 500 Open Karts. On any given week, you never know who will race, but it's known that there are over a dozen karts in the area. A conversation with the Holmes Racing Team let us know that we could see Tanner Holmes at some point this season. This also means his sister Carley could see some action in the 250 Karts, which would certainly make that division more interesting. The 500 Open class puts on a good show when the drivers choose to come out, but we'll just have to see if somebody will come out and add their name alongside Mike Wheeler and Josh Steinhoff as feature winners this year.

The Fuller family is keeping the UAS Speedway Kart effort going. Lori Fuller was the unlikely winner in her 4 Cycle Kart last time out. In a matter of a lap, double heat race winner Larry Fuller, Johnny Hoult and race leader Steve Rambo all retired from the race, leaving Lori to pick up the winner's trophy. The Fuller family brings a great deal of enthusiasm to the speedway and has helped give the program a nice boost this year.

Hibbard Keeps On Rolling With Fifth Kendall Oil 

Winged Sprint Car Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...July 14...Taking the lead from Jeffrey Hudson on the 10th lap, David Hibbard went on to win another 25 lap Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. This was the fifth win of the season for the current point leader, and it started out with him playing catch up with Jeffrey Hudson, who would settle for his second runner-up finish of the season.

Dwarf Car Star Camden Robustelli had his distributor problem solved and made a surprise appearance. He held off Hibbard to win the first of two eight lap heat races. Hudson outran rookie Theron Smith to claim the other heat race victory. Hudson set himself up for a pole position start for the Main Event by winning the eight lap Scramble ahead of 2009 champion Charlie Thompson.

Hudson set the early Main Event pace ahead of Thompson. The only caution flag of the race flew on left three for debris on the track. Hudson led Thompson and David Hibbard on the restart. Hibbard ran closely behind Thompson until making an inside pass on the backstretch of the eighth lap to claim the second spot. Two laps later, he made a similar move on Hudson and emerged with the lead. Blaine Cory had just settled into fifth, and he made an inside pass on the backstretch to take fourth from Bailey Hibbard on lap 12. Meanwhile, David Hibbard pulled away just a little bit from Hudson at the front of the pack, and Cory made a Turn 4 pass on Thompson on lap 14 to take over third. David Hibbard set at a rapid pace up front as he went on to claim the victory, followed by Hudson, Cory, Thompson, Bailey Hibbard, Robustelli, Aaron Miller, Todd Whipple and Smith.

Augustine Debuts New Car With Second Late Model Win

White City, Oregon...July 14...Nathan Augustine won the 25 lap Late Model Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Augustine is the current point leader, and he became the first two-time winner of the season as he debuted a new car. Recent Sunset Speedway feature winner John Dees ran a good race and finished second for the third time this season.

John Dees started the night off right by winning the four lap Trophy Dash. He followed that up by picking up a win in his six lap heat race, while Augustine outran Bob Dees to win the other heat. This put Augustine and John Dees on the front row, and they settled into the first and second positions at the drop of Derrel Nelson's green flag. Bob Dees ran closely in third, and Eric Massey spun in Turn 2 for the only caution flag on lap two. Augustine continued to lead John Dees on the restart, and Dave Foote took fourth from Miles Deubert on lap four. Two race long battles begin at that point as John Dees searched for a way underneath Augustine for the lead, while Foote was battling Bob Dees for third. Massey pitted after being lapped on lap 14. During the final five laps, John Dees was giving Augustine some serious pressure, but Augustine was up to the task as he held on for the much-needed victory. John Dees settled for second, followed by Bob Dees, Foote, Deubert, Massey and Don Garrett Jr.

The Late Models will return as part of Hall of Fame Night on August 18th. In addition to inducting some of the past Southern Oregon racing greats into the Hall of Fame, the racing program will also include IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, JOAT Labs Hornets, OTRO Hardtops and Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks. Steele Caps Clean Sweep With Fifth Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...July 14...David Steele scored the victory in the 20 lap Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. He continued his march towards the championship as he capped a clean sweep effort that also included wins in his heat race and the Trophy Dash. Teammate Steve Goetz settled for second.

Steele kicked of the night by out running Goetz to win the four lap Trophy Dash. Steele and Goetz each won six lap heat races. In Steele's heat race, Gary Anderson and Kristopher makes got together exiting Turn 4 and Anderson's car careened into the front wall, doing severe front end damage. Steele and Goetz shared the front row of the Main Event and raced into the top two positions. Mix settled into third and raced past Goetz for second on a lap four restart. However, when Hunter Magnan brought out a lap seven caution flag, track officials penalized Mix two positions for a jump start infraction. Steele led Goetz as Mix moved back into third. A series of three caution flags during the midpoint of the race did not deter Steele as he maintained his lead over Goetz and Mix on each restart. Even a final restart following a lap 18 yellow flag for Magnan didn't stop Steele. He again charged into the lead and took it to the checkered flag in victory. Goetz settled for second ahead of Mix. Garrett Fredrickson held off Magnan's late charge to finish fourth. Magnan settled for fifth ahead of McLeod.

Hedges Takes Point Lead With JOAT Labs Hornets Feature Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...July 14...2016 champion Tim Hedges scored his first 20 lap JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event win of the season Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. He became the fifth different winner in six races after earlier winning the Trophy Dash. When the points were tallied, Hedges emerged with the point lead over the surprising Bree Tritchler, who finished second for the third straight race.

Tim Hedges won a spirited duel with his son, Ashtin Hedges, to claim the four lap Trophy Dash victory. There were two very competitive heat races with Zach Nelson winning the first six lapper ahead of Tim Hedges. Dylan Irving scored a photo finish victory over Ashtin Hedges in the second heat. Zach Nelson led the opening lap of the Main Event from his pole position start, but an inside move in Turn 4 a lap later put Tim Hedges into the lead. The caution flag soon followed for Tritchler. Hedges continued to lead Nelson and Chris Boynton on the restart, but Boynton took second from Nelson on lap four. Ashtin Hedges moved into contention for third and made an inside pass on the backstretch on lap six to take third from Nelson. A high pass in Turn 4 of the ninth lap gained Ashtin Hedges second from Boynton before a caution flag waved for Boynton on the frontstretch. Tim Hedges led Ashtin Hedges and Tritchler on the restart. Tritchler raced underneath Ashtin Hedges in Turn 4 for second on lap 12 as the lead three cars ran closely. Dylan Irving was up to fourth at that time, and a high pass in Turn 4 of what would have been the 16th lap put Tritchler into the lead. However, the caution flag flew for Nelson and negated the pass. On the restart, Ashtin Hedges lost power for another caution flag. Tim Hedges led Tritchler and Irving on the next restart, and the lead three ran in that order to the finish. Dylan Sauer had his best finish yet in fourth, followed by Saundra Hattrick, Boynton, Ashtin Hedges and Nelson.

David Hibbard continues to roll with his fifth Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car win.

White City, Oregon...July 14...Point leader David Hibbard won his fifth 25 lap Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car Main Event of the season. Jeffrey Hudson led at the start as Hibbard ran third. An inside pass on the back stretch on lap eight gained Hibbard second from Charlie Thompson, and he made a similar move two laps later to grab the lead from Hudson. Once he got the lead, David Hibbard pulled away to the impressive victory. Hudson ran a solid second, followed by Blaine Cory, Charlie Thompson and Bailey Hibbard.

Point leader Nathan Augustine debuted his new car with his second win of the season.

Point leader Nathan Augustine made a successful debut of his new car by winning the 25 lap Late Model Main Event. Augustine bolted ahead at the start, but John Dees moved into second. After a lap three caution flag, the rest of the race ran non stop and John Dees pressured Augustine all the way. However, Augustine scored his second win of the season and John Dees settled for his third second place finish. Bob Dees finished third, followed by Dave Foote and Miles Deubert.

 David Steele made his fifth Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock win a clean sweep performance.

Point leader David Steele continues to roll as he won his fifth Mini Stock Main Event of the season. Steele won his heat and the Trophy Dash and led the Main Event from the start. A yellow flag flew with two laps to go, but Steele continued his rapid pace on the restart and won ahead of Steve Goetz, Kristopher Mix, Garrett Fredrickson and Hunter Magnan.

 Tim Hedges will likely be the JOAT Labs Hornets point leader after his clean sweep.

Tim Hedges won his first 20 lap JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event of the season. Hedges took the lead from Zach Nelson on the second lap and led the rest of the way. Bree Tritchler came from the fourth row to challenge Hedges before settling for her third second place finish. Dylan Irving, Dylan Sauer and Saundra Hattrick made up the remainder of the Top 5.

White City, Oregon...Southern Oregon Speedway is having Kids Night this Saturday night. There will be free admission for all kids 12 years and younger. The night will also include bike giveaways and free Hot Wheels to the first 100 kids through the gates. The Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars will be racing once again. Also on the card for the night will be the Late Models, Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks and JOAT Labs Hornets.

David Hibbard is hitting his stride as he has now won four of the five Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car Main events so far this season. In the past two weeks, Hibbard has not won the Scramble, which determines who gets the pole position for the Main Event. Last week, it was Garen Linder making a surprise entrance and winning both his heat race and the Scramble. A week earlier, the division's top rookie, Blaine Cory won his heat and the Scramble. In both cases, Hibbard still found his way into the lead. Last week's Main Event ran 25 laps without a yellow flag, and nobody could stop Hibbard from leading all the way in victory.

However, the rapidly improving Cory has posted back-to-back second place finishes. Cory surprised Linder during the most recent race by making a mid race pass to take over second. While Hibbard now holds a 38 point lead ahead of Jeffrey Hudson, Cory has pulled into a tie with David's son Bailey Hibbard for third in the standings, 14 points behind Hudson. People are now talking about the potential of Cory being the next Main Event winner. Enrique Jaime vacated third in the points as the team discovered motor problems last Friday night. He is anticipated this week along with other hard chargers such as 2009 champion Charlie Thompson, Merissa Henson, Aaron Miller and Calvin Hibbard.

In four Late Model races we have seen four different Main Event winners. A look at the top of the standings shows that three of those winners occupy the first three positions. To maintain his point lead, Nathan Augustine was forced to borrow the Don Garrett Jr car last time as he awaits a new car following the destruction of his own ride at the third event. Augustine leads rookie Miles Deubert by just seven points. Dave Foote only holds a two point advantage over John Dees for third. Dees has a pair of seconds and a third as he searches for his first career victory. These four drivers are anticipated this week along with Garrett, Bob Dees, Garrett Dees, Mike Linder and Eric Massey. Word from California is that 2017 Antioch Speedway point runner-up David Newquist and teammate Joey Olschowka will be back once again this week.

David Steele continues his quest for his first Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock championship. Though Steele has won well over 20 Main Events here, he has never won the track championship. He does have the 2015 Yreka championship to his credit. With four feature wins so far this season, Steele leads the much improved Hunter Magnan by 31 points. Magnan is closing in on his first career win, and he leads reigning champion Kristopher Mix by 24 points in the battle for second. Mix is the only other driver in the field with a Main Event win so far. Other drivers to watch for this week include 2014 champion Gary Anderson, 2013 champion Steve Goetz, Michael McLeod and Ashtin Hedges.

Speaking of Hedges, the young hard charger now finds himself in the thick of the JOAT Labs Hornets championship battle following his second feature win last time out. He is tied with reigning champion Jason Stoutenburgh for the lead, two points ahead of 2016 champion Tim Hedges and four in front of the surprising Bree Tritchler, who finished second in the most recent Main Event for the second straight week. One time winner Brandon Wonsyld vacated the point lead due to a prior commitment two weeks ago. He slipped to fifth, one point ahead of another one time Main Event winner, Chris Boynton. All of these drivers are anticipated this week,  along with Derrel Nelson Jr, Zach Nelson, Dylan Irving and John Ferreira.

There is sure to be some great racing at the speedway this Saturday night, and kids get in free. Gates open at 5 p.m. with the first race starting at 7 p.m. General Admission is $12, while Veterans and Seniors are $6. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Pit Stops

The IMCA Modifieds returned to Southern Oregon Speedway last Saturday night and put on an entertaining show. Other than a tangle in Turn 3 that forced a complete restart, the race was destined to go without a yellow flag when things were restarted. Considering the bad luck that he had been through since winning the season opener, Mark Wauge was on a mission to put his car in the Winner's Circle for a milestone 50th career win in this division at his home track.

It didn't take long for the seven-time champion to race into the lead. Once he got there, he might have figured it was just a matter of running the laps and he'd be taking the checkered flag ahead of the pack. What he didn't count on was that black #88 car that pulled up behind him. Zach Fettenger picked up an impressive win a few weeks ago, but there was something on his mind after that win.

The night he won a few weeks earlier, he was battling Wauge for position when a slower car veered into their path and took both drivers out. While Zach's crew got his car patched up and ready to go again at the back of the pack, Wauge suffered too much damage to continue that night. Therefore, when Zach made his way to the front of the pack that night, Wauge was nowhere in sight. This time, if he was going to get the win, he had to beat the man that some people consider to be the icon of the division.

As they worked the 10th lap, Zach found his opening down low and moved by Wauge for the lead. Wauge held on to second for a couple more laps before heading for the pits. It was a case of more mechanical issues for the driver who is currently ranked third in the standings. Fettinger might have been expecting another challenge from point leader, Nick Trenchard. However, there was a driver in front of Trenchard keeping him from second. Fettinger sped to the victory and became the first two-time winner of the season. Last season, there were no repeat winners, and Zach, much like Wauge, has won three Main Events at the track in the last two seasons. Nobody else has won more than two in that time.

One of those two-time winners is Albert Gill, and he watched Nick Trenchard going by to briefly gain second. However, Gill wasn't having any of that as he drove back around and maintained second all the way to the checkered flag. For Gill, this is his second second place finish of the year, but he's still looking for his first win. Trenchard maintained third all the way to the checkered flag as he holds on to the point lead after five events.

Further back but on the lead lap were Jeremy Ohlde and Andy Freeman in a close battle for fourth. Freeman picked up a Trophy Dash win earlier in the evening and held fourth for several laps. Ohlde was trying to overcome a penalty from the incident that resulted in the restart, and he made the move around Freeman for the fourth place finish. It still had to be a bit frustrating for Jeremy, who seemed to have a car capable of winning.

Saturday night was a somber occasion for the Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association and the Southern Oregon racing community in general. Southern Oregon racing icon Markey James had passed away during the week. The James family has been a part of Southern Oregon racing going back to the early days of the Posse Grounds Medford Raceway in the 1950s when Markey's father Cecil James was a promoter there. Markey won many races through the years and was a part of things at Southern Oregon Speedway for many years as well. His son Brett James has been racing with the Dwarf Cars this year, and grandson Josh King is a two-time champion. There's even another James racing at the Outlaw Kart track, Jacob James.

Prior to the Main Event, the Dwarf Car competitors had a memorial lap for Markey. After that, they proceeded to put on a race that would have made him proud. There are several drivers on the cusp of victory this year, and the record shows that in six Southern Oregon Speedway visits the only repeat winner is Kalvin Morton. Morton battled his way around the likes of Ryan Smith, Josh King and Fred Hay and into the second position.

Once Morton and got there, he set his sights on race long leader Cody Peters. Peters has been running strong this year, but various different things have happened to steal his chances at victory. This time, the second generation racer wasn't about to let it get away. They started 22 cars in the Main Event, which meant traffic would come up on them before they took the checkered flag. Peters made the right moves, and even though Morton made a really good run going to the checkered flag, his bid for a third straight win came up just short. Cody joined his father Brock Peters on the winner's list this year, but unfortunately for Brock, his race ended on lap eight.

Morton is certainly looking as fast as he was prior to the rollover he suffered on 4th of July Weekend in 2016. It just may be that the championship that got away could be his to win this season. However, Chad Cardoza, Peters and Smith, who finished fourth on this occasion, may have something to say about that. King jumped behind the wheel of the #4us car, which he had driven to a feature win earlier this season for Jerry Hauck. He had been driving the #14 car for a couple of weeks, but they made the decision prior to the races for him to get into the #4us car and put Brett James in the #14 car. Josh won the A Dash and then had a respectable fifth place finish in the Main Event ahead of Camden Robustelli.

The driver finishing third in the Main Event was ageless icon Fred Hay. Hay had finished second the week before, making this his second straight Top 3 finish. The way he's running, it wouldn't be surprising to see Fast Freddie picking up his first win since 2015. Another driver looking good was rookie Michael Johnson, who finished a solid seventh ahead of Kaycee Sheeler. Johnson kept pace with the leaders this time as he continues to get comfortable behind the wheel of a Dwarf Car.

The road to a Main Event victory in the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car division goes through current point leader David Hibbard. Hibbard has been fast all season long. Even if he's not winning the Scramble to get the pole for the Main Event, you know he will be challenging you for the lead. On this occasion, there was a driver hoping to swoop in and steal a victory. He's Garen Linder, and he's won Sprint Car Main Events in the past at Southern Oregon Speedway.

This year, Linder has picked up victories in Winged 360 competition at Grays Harbor Speedway and Silver Dollar Speedway, so he thought he'd test out the #42 car, normally driven by rookie Theron Smith. Linder picked up both the wins in his heat race and the Scramble. With a pole position, he figured it would be a snap to wheel the car, crew chiefed by past champion TJ Winningham, to the victory. What he wasn't expecting was David Hibbard pulling ahead at the drop of the green flag. As he watched him pull away a little bit more, he was in for another surprise.

Rookie Blaine Cory was out to show that his second place finish the week before was not luck. Fact is, this young gun is getting better each time he gets behind the wheel. By lap 15, Cory was making his move around Linder to grab the second place finish. However,  Hibbard was just a little bit too far ahead enoute to his fourth win in five starts. The night David didn't win, he was finishing second to son Bailey Hibbard.

Speaking of Bailey Hibbard, the second place finish for Cory moved him into a tie with him for third in the standings as Enrique Jaime dropped a couple of positions by missing the race. It turns out the Jaime team discovered a motor problem on Friday that they were unable to resolve in time to go racing. This was a big blow to Enrique's championship hopes as well as his shot at second place Jeffrey Hudson in the standings. He falls back 28 points as a result of his absence, but you have to believe Enrique is still a contender for a feature victory the way he's been running.

For Cory, his recent two seconds have moved him to within 14 points of second place Hudson in a close battle. Hudson was not having a very good night as he finished back in seventh behind 2009 champion Charlie Thompson in the Main Event. Meanwhile, rookie Tanner Holmes was doing a little bit better with a fourth place finish ahead of Bailey Hibbard. Tanner has been busy making starts in Outlaw Kart competition and also recently made an appearance at Cottage Grove. This week was an important week for the 14 year old leadfoot. He was making his Speedweek debut in the team's Winged 360 Sprint Car.

Meanwhile, the IMCA Sport Modified competitors were left a little bit frustrated after a race filled with spins and crashes. Some of the drivers you might anticipate running at the front of the pack were left to go back to the drawing board. Two-time reigning champion Mike Medel has been absent as he's run up north in recent weeks, but a recent start at Willamette resulted in a broken chassis. It was fixable, and Mike was hoping to come back to his home track and compete for a win. After winning his heat, a tangle took him out of the action early.

Likewise, the bad Main Event luck continued for Willie McFall. McFall seems to have mastered the Trophy Dash as he picked up another win there, but the IMCA points go to the drivers in the Main Event. He again missed a Top 10 finish in 11th. Because of that, the Tonys, Bartell and Duste, gained even more ground on him in the battle as they finished fifth and sixth, respectively. McFall now leads Bartell by four points and Duste and Branden Wilson by five points.

Wilson has sort of been creeping along under the radar, and perhaps nobody was expecting him to do what he did on Saturday night. The Yreka connection, Jimmy Lipke and Randy Wright, ran at the front of the pack for much of the race. Wright was the only driver during the first 19 laps to challenge Lipke for the lead, gaining that spot briefly. Other than that, Lipke was running along and seemed headed for an impressive victory.

However, in the latter stages of the race, Wilson had settled the matter of who was in second as he got around Wright, and he had an impressive 20th lap. As he gathered momentum exiting Turn 4 he found himself moving by Lipke. To the surprise of the crowd, he beat Lipke to the checkered flag for the victory. It turned out to be the most exciting finish of the night at the track.

When it's your time to shine, the breaks go your way. Incoming point leader David Marble won his heat race, but his Main Event was a little bit rough during the first half of the race. He spun and had to go to the back of the pack. However, Marble never gave up on the race, and he made a late move around Wright to finish a respectable third. This finish moved him 28 points in front of McFall in the championship battle. Wright settled for fourth, which is one of his better finishes so far on the circuit this season.

For the Valley Store All Late Model Lites, Lee Doty was a welcome sight in the pits. Doty had a nice looking black and red #7 car out there, and it ran as swiftly as it looked. Still, Lee was being tentative with the car as he didn't want to over drive it and do something he'd regret. The last time he was at the speedway, while leading a race, he brushed the front wall and flipped his car. Doty reports that there will be a second car as he purchased the #40 car driven by Randy Hansen and Bob Westcott to feature wins last season. It's likely that Dusty Aos will be piloting that machine next time out.

Doty did find his way into third during the Main Event as reigning champion Bob Burkett was working on a clean sweep and leading championship hopeful Greg Arnold. When Arnold suffered mechanical issues halfway through the race and retired, it opened the door for Doty to try to make a move. Unfortunately, as they went to a lap 15 restart, Doty made slight contact with Burkett exiting Turn 2, allowing Charlie Eaton to race past both of them and steal the lead and victory.

There have been many times during these past three seasons where Eaton was right in the thick of the battle and could only muster a second or third. This year, things are different. This was his second feature win this season, and with the bad luck of Arnold, he added a few points to his lead. He still leads a very close championship race. Burkett would settle for second ahead of Doty at the finish. Bob isn't running for points this year, but he is hoping to notch another win or two in Main Event competition. His trophy Dash victory isn't too much of a surprise. Nobody at the speedway in the past six or seven years has won more Trophy Dashes than Bob has.

Outlaw Kart Pit Stops

The Friday Night Outlaw Kart program has seen a little bit of an increase in support from the drivers this year over last year. Though not a huge increase, there are more drivers making an effort to be out there for each race. Hoping to keep that momentum going, management decided that instead of running three straight races they would scratch the scheduled race for this Friday night to allow the kids to enjoy Friday night at the County Fair.

There's another interesting situation developing in the Beginners Box Stock division. There are some drivers that are very new to the scene. In fact, they are very tentative behind the wheel as they negotiate the track and make laps at a slow and steady pace. There are a few drivers with a little bit more experience, yet still of the age group allowed in the Beginners class. They come up on these slower karts very rapidly, and it makes things a little bit dicey at the front of the pack.

This was certainly true at the most recent race as Malachi Johnson and Mike Wheeler Jr were slicing and dicing for the lead through slower traffic. Johnson was just a little quicker and managed to just beat Wheeler back to the line for his third straight victory as he maintains the point lead over here Carson Henson.

For Hanson, the night was an opportunity for him to return to the red #11 kart. It's the kart he won the Yreka Indoor championship with this past offseason, and he's just a bit more comfortable behind the wheel. He had been leading Uriah Sanders in a good battle for third. Sanders ended up spinning, but he still made a late pass around the steady Jayme DrBenedetti to finish fourth. Sanders will maintain third in the standings as Shailene Horn was absent. The Hornbrook fire had an impact on the show as a few drivers in the kart program were unable to come. Shailene's grandfather is a volunteer firefighter. Wheeler is now tied for third on the standings with DeBenedetti, 17 points behind Sanders.

As to the solution with the slower newcomers, management is strongly considering the possibility of putting these drivers in their own heat and Main Event and labeling the class Novice Beginner Box Stocks. This would be the place to learn and get comfortable while not worrying about being run over by the faster karts. Drivers demonstrating that they are comfortable and able to go at a little quicker pace could then be a part of the regular Beginners class.

What happens when you are comfortable behind the wheel of your Box Stock was clearly demonstrated in Friday's show with Box Stock point leader Keaton Augustine and Jacob James again winning heat races. Augustine bolted into the lead at the start of the Main Event with James right him. Right behind James was Ryan Hirschbock and Taylor Fuller. The four Karts ran nose to tail for the entire 15 lap distance and did so with no yellow flags.

The kids were all looking for a mistake to be made by the driver in front of them, but no mistakes were made. Hirschbock seemed to be the most active as he looked high and low to get around James, but James held on for his second straight runner-up finish. Augustine leads the championship chase by eight points ahead of Hirschbock and 14 points ahead of the tied James and Fuller. The steady Kiley Grimes looked much better as she picked up a lead lap fifth place finish.

In the 250 Kart division, Trevor Grimes now sees a threat in the field. He's Vinny DeBenedetti, and he's had Trevor's number for these past two races. Vinny's ace in the hole is his ability to put his kart up on the outside and make passes when he needs to. In fact, his passes around heat race winners Cadyn Smith and Grimes were both made on the outside. Grimes had mechanical issues a lap after losing the lead to retire from the race.

We've been speaking to the toughness of young Vinny, who had his hard times last season as he hit the Turn 4 wall in his Box Stock and rolled. Rather than return in a Box Stock, he made the move up to 250's, perhaps a year sooner than most kids might have gone there. Lori Fuller was the unlikely winner of the Main Event for the UAS Speedway Karts last week. She was piloting the only Four Cycle in the field, and her strategy is simple. Make steady laps and get it to the finish line. This time, the competition fell very rapidly. Only one lap had been in the books when Lori was the only driver left on the track. She was declared the winner. Double heat race winner Larry Fuller, Johnny Hoult and the leader of the first lap, Steve Rambo, we're all out. The drivers will get everything tuned up and be back for the next race on July 20th.
