Wauge From The Back For $1500 Haundenshild Win 

At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon.. May 28...With a $1500 first prize on the line in the Roger Haudenshild Tribute Race, six time champion Mark Wauge impressed with his charge to the front of the pack for the 30 lap IMCA Modified victory.  Wauge had to start in the last row in a race that ran with just one caution flag and a complete restart.  He took the lead from Manteca long tow Darrell Hughes II on lap 20.  Once in front, Wauge was not to be denied as he pulled away for the win.  Hughes settled for an $800 second to go with his $200 win in the Crack The Whip Challenge.  Jesse Bailey enjoyed his second straight third place finish for a $500 payday.  The extra money was made possible thanks to sponsorship from The Haudenshild Family and Dusty's Transmissions of Central Point.

Car count grew to 24 cars as the IMCA Modified field was bolstered by visitors from California and Northern Oregon.  The three heat races would transfer six cars into the big money feature.  Hughes got things started by winning his six lap race ahead of two time defending champion Albert Gill.  Wauge suffered rear end problems and had to be towed off the track for repairs.  Past Chico Silver Dollar Speedway champion Duane Cleveland won his heat race ahead of Lloyd Speer. Zach Fettinger impressed by outdueling past IMCA Modified and Pro Stock champion Brian Poppa for the win in the third heat race.

The four lap Trophy Dash started the evening off and was based on the first four finishers of the previous Main Event.  Bailey won that race ahead of Wauge.  The six lap Crack The Whip Challenge race had six competitors with each last place car dropping out every lap until Hughes remained for the $200 victory.  Only two drivers would transfer from the 12 lap B Main.  Wauge chased Mark Carrell for three laps before making a pass on a Lap 3 restart for the victory.  Carrell held on for second ahead of Jeremy Ohlde, a disappointed Matt Duste, Scott Crumm and James Anderson.

The Main Event had 20 starters, and Poppa started back in the third row.  Hughes started right behind him in the fourth row outside, while Wauge was all the way back in the tenth row inside.  After a multi car crash in Turn 1 forced a complete restart, Poppa shot into the lead on the opening lap ahead of past Madras champion B.J. Wild.  Wild spun in Turn 2 for the only other yellow flag after one lap.  Poppa led Hughes, Gill and Cleveland on the restart, and Cleveland raced past Gill for third on lap 3.  Hughes was pressuring Poppa hard for the lead before using an inside pass in Turn 3 of the fifth lap to gain the lead.  The flying Wauge was already sixth by then as he drove a low line that had him glued to the race track.  Wauge raced past Ryan McDaniel for fifth on lap six, and he slipped underneath both Gill and Randy McDaniel for fourth on lap seven.  Bailey was fifth by lap nine as the two began closing in on the Top 3 runners. A low move in Turn 4 of the 11th lap gained Wauge third from Cleveland as Hughes was lapping slower cars.  Wauge raced underneath Poppa for second in Turn 4 of the 15th lap.  Bailey took fourth from Cleveland on lap 17, and Wauge was closing in quickly on leader Hughes.  An inside move in Turn 2 of the 20th lap gained Wauge the lead.  Bailey raced by Poppa for third on the same lap.  Once Wauge grabbed the lead, he set a blistering pace that saw him lapping several cars down the stretch.  Wauge was the happy winner ahead of Hughes, Bailey, Poppa, Randy McDaniel and Cleveland, the final lead lap finisher.  Nick Trenchard was seventh ahead of Mark Carrell, Ryan McDaniel and Gill.

Racing resumes this week with Outlaw Kart Racing on the smaller track on Friday night.  A six division show is on tap for Saturday night, headlined by the Pennzoil Winged Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Open Stock Cars, Hornets and OTRO Hardtops.  For further information, check the website at www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Cooper Brothers Go 1-2 in Salute To Billy Hammond

White City, Oregon...May 28...Taking the lead from Brentwood, CA visitor Patti Ryland on lap seven, Chico, CA visitor Todd Cooper pocketed the $1000 first prize in the Salute To Billy Hammond 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified feature Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  The event was part of the Roger Haudenshild Tribute and attracted some top drivers from California and Northern Oregon.  Todd Cooper was chased across the line by his Silver Dollar Speedway point leading brother Brian Cooper, who collected $700 for second.  Point leader Jorddon Braaten held off California IMCA State champion Fred Ryland to finish a $400 third.  The extra money was made possible thanks to sponsorship from The Haudenshild Family and Dusty's Transmissions of Central Point.

The Top 4 finishers from the previous feature started the evening off with a five lap Trophy Dash, won by Jimmy Lipke ahead of Bob Nelsen.  Defending IMCA Oregon State Champion Mike Medel won the first six lap heat race ahead of rookie David Marble.  Todd Cooper grabbed the victory in the second heat race ahead of two time champion Dwayne Melvin.  The four lap Crack The Whip Challenge race had four competitors with each last place car dropping out every lap until F. Ryland remained to collect the $100 first prize.

Patti Ryland started in the third row inside with T. Cooper in the second row outside and B. Cooper in the sixth row inside in the 17 car Main Event.  The race had to be restarted when rookie A.J. Parker spun and Marble's car died with a battery issue.  Medel led the complete restart ahead of P. Ryland and T. Cooper.   Another yellow flag flew after one lap for Chris Frisbie.  Medel continued to lead P. Ryland on the restart as Braaten used an inside pass in Turn 4 to take third.  Ryland slipped underneath Medel for the lead on lap 3 as Braaten followed her into second.  T. Cooper made an inside pass in Turn 4 to shuffle Medel out of the Top 3, and Phillip Shelby spun in Turn 2, collecting F. Ryland for a lap four caution flag.  The first restart attempt was botched by a Glen Severson spin in Turn 2.  P. Ryland continued to lead T. Cooper on the restart as B. Cooper finally made his first appearance in the Top 3.  P. Ryland led a lap six restart before T. Cooper made an inside pass in Turn 3 of the seventh lap to grab the lead.  P. Ryland made an inside move past T. Cooper in Turn 2 a lap later, but T. Cooper and B. Cooper both got back by her before the lap was complete.  Randy Fernandes and Tony Bartell got together in Turn 2 for a lap ten caution flag.  The Cooper brothers continued to run 1-2 on the restart ahead of P. Ryland and Braaten.  Marble had returned, but his car died on the back stretch for a final caution flag on lap 12.  T. Cooper led B. Cooper on the restart.  P. Ryland ran third, but Braaten was giving her lots of pressure.  Braaten made an outside pass in Turn 4 of the 13th lap to grab third with F. Ryland getting by his wife for fourth.  The rest of the race was caution free with T. Cooper winning by two thirds of a straightaway ahead of B. Cooper.  Braaten beat F. Ryland back to the line for third as Shelby, Nelsen, P. Ryland, Melvin, Lipke and Medel completed the Top 10.

King Collects Second SODCA Dwarf Car Feature Win

White City, Oregon...May 28...Grabbing the lead midway through the race, Josh King went on to win the 20 lap SODCA Dwarf Car feature Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  King is a two time reining SODCA Dwarf Car champion, and this was his second straight win at the track this year.  Championship hopeful Kalvin Morton backed up his recent win at Yreka with a second place finish ahead of Ryan Smith.

The Dwarf Cars brought 14 cars, and Chad Cardoza continued with his preliminary race success by winning his six lap heat race ahead of Camden Robustelli. Morton won the other six lap heat race in front of Smith.  The group ran a six lap A Dash with Cardoza grabbing the win ahead of Robustelli.  King won the eight lap B Dash in front of Brock Peters.

The Main Event had 13 starters as Chad Cardoza and Brock Peters shared the front row.  King lined up in the third row inside behind Morton.  B. Peters led the opening lap before Jerry Hauck spun the former C.J. Putnam car for a yellow flag.  Peters led the restart ahead of King and Smith.  Working lap 5, King used in inside pass in Turn 4 to take the lead from Peters, but a James Edwards spin brought out the yellow flag that negated the pass.  The racing got a little too close on the restart lap as contact between King and B. Peters saw Peters take a ride off the track in Turn 2.  Cardoza raced around the incident to grab the lead as King recovered in second ahead of Rob Gergel.  The leaders ran close with Morton taking third from Gergel on lap five in a close five car battle up front.  Mark Nielson spun in Turn 2 for a lap nine caution flag.  Cardoza led King and Morton on the restart, and King made a low pass in Turn 1 of the 11th lap to grab the lead from Cardoza.  Spins by rookies Neilson and Hauck forced caution flags on laps 12 and 13.  Morton made a front stretch pass on Cardoza for third on lap 15.  The  rest of the race ran without a yellow flag, and King put a couple of lapped cars between he and second place finisher Morton by the checkered flag.  Gergel and Cardoza bumped wheels on lap 17 with Cardoza limping to the pits.  Smith finished third ahead of Gergel, Cody Peters, Randy Slater, Edwards, Nielson, Cardoza and Hauck.

Several SODCA competitors will take part in the Dwarf Car Nationals event in Vernal, Utah on June 3-4 before heading to Cottage Grove for another non club point race on June 11th.  The only club point event in the busy month of June will be on the 18th at Southern Oregon Speedway.  For further club information, check out their official home page at www.sodca.net.

Thompson Wins Super 4's Return 

To Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...May 28...The Super 4's division made their return to Southern Oregon Speedway on Saturday night.  They've been scheduled for seven races, but the first one was rained out.  It was Steve Thompson winning the 10 lap Main Event.

Several Super 4 drivers have been wanting to come back to the speedway, and four of them made the trip for the first race.  Lee Doty won the group's lone appearance last season, but his red, white and blue #7 car suffered mechanical problems in hot laps to end his night.  It was 2013 champion John Barger winning a duel with Thompson in the six lap heat race, but Bill Spencer suffered mechanical gremlins to end his night.  Thompson led all ten laps of the Main Event as Barger was second.

Making a drive from the back after winning the B Main, Mark Wauge scored a big $1,500 IMCA Modified victory Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Darrell Hughes II led most of the race until being passed by Wauge and settling for second.  California invaders ran at the front of the IMCA Sport Modified feature.  It was Chico visitor Todd Cooper grabbing the lead from Patti Ryland on lap 7 and going on to win the $1000 prize in the 20 lap race.  Two time Dwarf Car champion Josh King won the 20 lap Dwarf Car feature that saw a half dozen lead changes among three different drivers.  Steve Thompson led all the way to capture the Super 4's 10 lap Main Event win.

Mark Wauge won the big 30 lap IMCA Modified Main Event.  After rear end problems in his heat race, Wauge had to win the 12 lap B Main to get into the feature.  Brian Poppa led five laps of the Main Event before being passed by $200 Crack The Whip winner Darrell Hughes II.  Wauge started back in 19th and was already up to third by lap 13 of a race that only had one early yellow flag.

Wauge made an inside pass in Turn 4 to take second from Poppa on lap 15.  He made a low pass in Turn 2 on lap 20 to take the lead from Hughes.  Wauge set a blistering pace from there and put some lapped cars between himself and Hughes by the time the race was over.  Jesse Bailey, Poppa and Randy McDaniel made up the rest of the Top 5.

Chico Silver Dollar Speedway racers Todd Cooper and Brian Cooper ran 1-2 in the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified feature.  T.  Cooper grabbed the lead from Patti Ryland on lap seven and would lead the rest of the way in victory.  B. Cooper followed T. Cooper around P. Ryland and would finish second by half a straightaway.  Jorddon Braaten edged Fred Ryland to the line for third as Marysville racer Phillip Shelby completed the Top 5.

Josh King won the 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event.  King started fifth and ran a steady race as Brock Peters led four laps.  King grabbed the lead on the fifth lap and lost it to Chad Cardoza on lap seven when he and Peters got together in Turn 2.  Peters was eliminated, and King made his winning pass on Cardoza in Turn 1 of the 11th lap.  King went on to win the race with Kalvin Morton making the pass for second on lap 15.  Ryan Smith finished third ahead of Rob Gergel and Cody Peters.

Steve Thompson won the 10 lap Super 4's Main Event.  Thompson led all the way with heat winner Dan Barger challenging him  briefly before settling for second.  Bill Spencer was third.

Racing continues next week with an Outlaw Kart race on Friday on the smaller track.  On Saturday, Pennzoil Winged Sprints and Modifieds headline the show along with Open Stock Cars, Mini Stocks, Hornets and OTRO Hardtops.  For further information, check out www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Haudenshild Tribute Race On Tap For 

Southern Oregon Speedway On Saturday

Rainy weather has won the last two races at Southern Oregon Speedway, but the forecast calls for racing this Saturday night.  It's one of the biggest races on the track's schedule, the Roger Haudenshild Tribute Race.  An extra $4,000 in purse money has been raised for the IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Modifieds.  SODCA Dwarf Cars and Super 4's are also on the card.

The racing community was saddened when Haudenshild passed away in the summer of 2012.  Roger was one of those guys who sponsored many race cars, sometimes anonymously  He was a lover of the sport and classic cars.  He even raced occasionally in Stock Cars and competed in Destruction Derbies.

Haudenshild was a dear friend and sponsor of IMCA Modified racer Matt Duste, who has been gathering the sponsorship money for the big race.  The Duste Racing Team was dealt another blow when crewman and Sport Mod racer Billy Hammond died in a motorcycle accident.  "It was tough for us for a couple of years, " Matt Duste admitted.  "We took a little time away from the sport and regrouped, but we're back."

As somebody who traveled to the Mid West to visit tracks every year, Roger saw a race called the "Crack The Whip Race" and brought the idea back to the track.  You take the top two or three heat race finishers, invert the field and run one lap per car in a special race.  Each lap, the last place car pulls off until you have the winner.

The IMCA Modifieds will run a $200 to win Crack The Whip Race and the IMCA Sport Modifieds will pay $100.  "Roger thought that was the neatest thing, " Matt explained, "and his family thought running that race would be a great way to honor his memory."

Last season, Brian Poppa (Modifieds) and Bob Nelson (Sport Modifieds) pocketed the extra money in the special dashes, while Nick Trenchard (Modifieds) and Matt Duste (Sport Mods) won the extra money Main Events.  "This is a special race that we want to use to honor all of the great drivers through the years who are no longer with us, " said Duste.  "It's also an opportunity for the racers to compete for a little extra money.  It will be a great night of racing."

With rain falling in the Medford area, six time champion Mark Wauge headed north to Cottage Grove and won his second IMCA Modified feature there, while Oregon State IMCA point leader Jorddon Braaten also made the trip and won his third Main Event there.  These two drivers won the season opener at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Not surprisingly, they are the favorites to win this week.

However, word is that there are drivers heading in from California to stake a claim on the prize money, and there are track regulars who should not be counted out.  Two time defending IMCA Modified champion Albert Gill, Jesse Bailey, Matt Duste, Duane Orsburn and Nick Trenchard are just a few of the competitors to watch for in the Modified division. 

Meanwhile, Braaten can expect some competition from defending IMCA State champion Mike Medel, Bob Nelson, Randy Fernandes and two time champion Dwayne Melvin, to name a few.  It should be a great night for both Modified divisions.

As if that isn't enough, the SODCA Dwarf Cars make their second appearance.  Young Kalvin Morton has been tearing up the scene this year.  Morton won his second race at Yreka last week as he tries to stake a claim on the championship.  Camden Robustelli is anticipated this week along with two time champion Josh King, Brock Peters, Rob Gergel, Kaycee Sheeler and Ryan Smith.

The Super 4's will take their first turn on the 3/10th mile clay oval this week.  Who will be there is still a question.  The event that was held for this division late last year was won by Lee Doty.  Doty was joined by Steve Thompson, Charlie Eaton, John Barger and Bill Spencer, and these drivers are anticipated for their season opener.

Pit Stops 

From the rumor mill comes reports that we may see at least one of the McDaniel team cars from the Marysville area.  Third generation racer Ryan McDaniel is a champion in Limited Late Models and IMCA Modifieds, and he will be fast competition in the IMCA Modified race if he's there.  Ryan's father Randy is also a multi time IMCA Modified champion at several tracks, and he would be a factor should he bring a car.

Kellen Chadwick is scheduled for another race this week, but the second generation racer has confirmed his intentions to compete in the upcoming Speedweek race on June 11th. Chadwick is a past Antioch Speedway champion, a winner of the big Modified race in Elma and a winner of last season's Lon Skinner Memorial Preliminary Main Event on Saturday.

The IMCA Sport Modifieds can expect stiff competition from the Cooper Racing Team Saturday night.  Brian Cooper is the current point leader at both Chico Silver Dollar Speedway and Marysville Raceway.  Todd Cooper is currently second at Chico and third at Marysvllle.  Both are fast.  No confirmation has been made of other drivers from the area coming, but there have been rumors.

Rumors abound of a big name in Sport Modified racing from California considering a visit this Saturday night, but this team has yet to officially decide.  If they do show up, they will be a serious threat to win the race.

Next week, June 3rd, we finally get to see some Outlaw Kart Racing on Friday night.  Two straight rain outs have pit a damper on things, but as the old saying goes, three's a charm.  It's time to get those Karts ready and get this show on the road.  Stay tuned for any scheduling information as there could be some good news in the future.

The Pennzoil Winged Sprint Cars will make their third appearance on June 4th, and word is we will see another new car in the field.  That would be 2009 champion Charlie Thompson.  Charlie was set to go last week, but the rains put a damper on that.  There is word of two more cars close to debuting as well as a visit from a racer from the north.  This division will continue to gain cars, and Southern Oregon Speedway remains firmly committed to Sprint Car racing as well as the other classes.

The Open Stock class will have a mixture of cars from Late Models to Pro Stocks and Street Stocks when they race on June 4th.  Veteran Mike Linder, who you may know from Sprint Car racing as well, should be here with his Late Model, and word is that Stock Car veteran Steve Lemley should have his Late Model at the track too.  Several Pro Stock drivers have expressed interest in running this race.

Joining these two classes on June 4th will be IMCA Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Hornets and OTRO Hardtops.  We anxiously await to see who will have Hornets at the track this year, but we know Derrel Nelson Jr. is planning to race.  The always exciting Mini Stocks have been a two car battle for the win so far with Bob Burkett and Gary Anderson sharing the glory at one win each.  Three divers looking like they can make a move on these two for a win are Andrew Hall, Marissa Henson and Kristopher Mix.  It should be a good race.

Friday And Saturday Night Racing On Tap For 
Southern Oregon Speedway

Rain came in and washed away the racing activities at Southern Oregon Speedway last week. However, the 3/10 mile clay oval and the 1/8 mile Outlaw Kart oval track will both come to life again this week. Outlaw Kart racing will happen on Friday night, while a four division show is set to go on Saturday night on the big track.

For nearly 20 years, the Kart track has been a training ground for some of the best drivers at the speedway. Drivers from as young as five years old to the young at heart will be racing in the six different classifications of cars this week. The program on Friday is set to start at 7 p.m. with the gates opening at 5 p.m.  General ticket pricing is $5.00 with children 5 and under free.

On tap for the big track on Saturday night will be Pennzoil Winged Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Mini Stocks and our first look at the Open Stock division. The Open Stock division brings together Late Models and Street Stocks and all classifications in between under an open set of rules. The intent is to establish a Stock Car presence once again at the speedway.

The Sprint Car division returns this week, and Vern Wheeler Jr will be going for three wins in a row. The experience factor plays heavily in Vern's favor, but his son Jake Wheeler has been impressive with his two second place finishes. Jake is a past champion at the Outlaw Kart track.

Young Drivers Camden Robustelli and Jeffrey Hudson continue to improve with each start. Robustelli has earned a start in the Trophy Dash this week along with low budget racer Wayne Kniffen. Can either of these drivers hold back the charge of the Wheeler's to pick up that trophy?

Veteran Mark Wauge has won six championships in his IMCA Modified career at the speedway. After winning the season opener, he doesn't seem to have lost a step. Wauge will be out for two in a row, but he can expect competition from hard chargers like Matt Duste, two time defending champion Albert Gill, Jesse Bailey and Duane Orsburn, among others.

It seems at the moment that the speed advantage in the Mini Stock division belongs to veteran Bob Burkett and 2014 champion Gary Anderson. Each driver has one Main Event win so far and finished second in the other one. There are several drivers on the cusp of victory in the Mini Stock division.

Drivers to keep an eye on include third ranked Marissa Henson, the fast Pinto Wagon of Andrew Hall and Kristopher Mix. Considering the fact that Mix had to put a car together under short notice after crashing his car in a practice session at another track, he's doing quite well.

We're not quite sure who is coming to the Open Stock opener, but we've heard that drivers with Late Models and Street Stocks will be among the field. With Sprint Cars and IMCA Modifieds on the card, along with the always exciting Mini Stocks, it is sure to be a good show.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with the first race to start at 7 p.m. sharp. Adult tickets are $12, Juniors and Seniors are $6, and children 5 and under are free.

Pit Stops

Preparations are being made for the annual Roger Haudenschild Tribute race on May 28th.  Increased purses are being offered for IMCA Modifieds and Sport Modifieds as well as the other classes.  An all star field is anticipated for the IMCA classes with the money on the line.  For the record, Mark Wauge is the defending champion of the IMCA Modified race.  The Southern Oregon  Dwarf Cars and Super 4's will make this a well balanced program that you won't want to miss. 

Last week, Mini Stock rookie Devin Weiser was set to make a run in his Hornet car when the rainout happened. Weiser is one of three drivers currently competing for the Mini Stock "Rookie of the Year" championship at Southern Oregon Speedway. His most recent start at his home track resulted in a sixth place finish. Since the rain prevented him from bringing out his Hornet, he took his Mini Stock down to Yreka and got his best finish yet in fifth. Can he grab his first top five finish at his home track this week?

Making the long trip from the Sacramento area to compete in his Sprint Car this week will be Bill Hopper. Coming off of back to back Wingless Sprint Car championships at Orland Raceway, Hopper's first visit to the speedway was rather forgettable. After blowing a tire on the way up, Bill was unable to get his race car to start all night. He missed the most recent race, but after visiting Placerville Speedway and making some good laps, he plans to be back this week. Bill had a penchant for notching runner up finishes at Orland in his two year title run, but can he take it up a notch and get a victory this week?

As all the divisions have gotten their first races in, they are now ready for Trophy Dashes. The IMCA Modifieds, Mini Stocks and Winged Sprint Cars get to run Trophy Dashes this week. These four lap contests will be the first races on the track at 7 p.m.sharp. The lineup is based on the top four finishers of the previous Main Event in the respective divisions.

Five Division Show On Tap For 
Southern Oregon Speedway This Saturday Night

The third event of the 2016 season is set for this Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. After the successful debut of the two IMCA Modified classes, we get our first look at the Hornet and Super 4 divisions. The Valley Boys Auto Sales Outlaw Pro Stocks, IMCA Sport Modifieds and OTRO Hardtops are also on the schedule. It should be another great night of racing on the fast 3/10's mile banked clay oval.

Last week was a bumpy beginning for the IMCA Sport Modified division, but it continued to be business as usual for two time defending champion Jorddon Braaten. Braaten led all the way, fighting off a challenge from two time champion Dwayne Melvin. Braaten has multiple championship goals in mind for this year, including his third track title a row and a state championship. It would be the ultimate accomplishment for the team as Jordan prepares to move up to the IMCA Modified division next year.

Last season's third place point runner, Bob Nelsen, had a good afternoon. His car was voted "Best Appearing" in the car show held earlier in the afternoon at a local business. He then drove to a third place finish in the Main Event.

David Marble made his division debut in fifth. Marble is moving up from the Mini Stock ranks, where he won the track championship last season. The difference is night and day in the way the cars handle. "Oh, this car is great, " Marble admitted. "There's no comparison between this and the Mini Stock. This thing practically drives itself."

Marble picked up a second place feature finish in Yreka about a month ago. His influence in racing is his uncle, past Southern Oregon Speedway Sprint Car Champion T.J. Winningham. "I pitted for him for many years, " David explained. "He's the one that talked me into racing. So, I got a Mini Stock about 7 years ago and started racing."

The Outlaw Pro Stock competitors are probably still chasing Steve Borror after last their last appearance. Borror put on a dominant performance in winning the Main Event by a half lap. This followed up his win in the group's season opener in Yreka just a few weeks before that. The question is, can anybody beat him this week?

That may fall to the two time champion Ken Irving, who hasn't finished outside of the top five in the standings in the last four seasons. Irving led the last feature for five laps before settling for a second place finish. Two other competitors, James Flowers and Roy Bain, were the only others to manage to stay on the lead lap last time out. Flowers is currently second in the group's point standings.

It is a family affair with the Flowers clan. Father Scott is coming off of back to back runner up point seasons. He is a past champion at the old Worden Speedway. James is his son, and daughter Julia just started in a Pro Stock this season. "She's been racing in Karts and she wanted to run with us this year, " Scott explained

The daughter already has one goal in mind. "I want to beat my father and my brother in a Main Event, " said Julia, who is a high school senior in Klamath Falls. Her first start at Yreka was a fifth place finish, and she took a checkered flag in eighth last time out.

It has been a few seasons since we last saw the Super 4's division. The effort was established about 15 years ago by local car builder Rick Rapp. After the 2012 season, several of the competitors headed for the pavement up north. John Barger remained and won the last track Championship the division had in 2013. He is one of the drivers that is anticipated this week.

As for who else will be racing, the word was that we could see anywhere from 6 to 10 cars for the opener. Lee Doty, who won the Main Event last year in the division's lone appearance, is anticipated to be one of those drivers. Prior to the most recent Outlaw Pro Stock show, one of that division's competitors and a two time Super 4 champion, Dennis Johnsen, talked about the possibility of being a competitor in this division once again.

The Hornets division is a gateway division to get new stars on to the big track. Last season, Dillon Lausen competed in the Hornet division as did Devon Weiser and Michael Johnson, who was second in the standings. All three of these drivers have moved up to the Mini Stock division this year. Johnson, a second generation competitor at the speedway, was just 14 years old when he started racing. Drew Fielder is the 2015 champion. Again, we've heard anywhere from 6 to 10 drivers could be out there to kick this division off. The Hornet division is in its third season, and optimism is high that it will grow in the weeks ahead.

The OTRO Hardtop division races on the payment up at Roseburg. A group of about a half a dozen of them are hoping to expand their horizons on the dirt. This week will be the first of five scheduled appearances for the group as they try to establish something.

Grandstands open at 5:00 p.m. with the first race starting at 7:00 p.m. sharp. Adult tickets are $12, Juniors and Seniors are $6.00 and children 5 and under are free.  For the ladies out there, Saturday night is Ladies Night, meaning only $6 to come out and watch a great night of racing.

Pit Stops

Of note on last week's roster was the appearance of six time IMCA Modified champion Mark Wauge. Wauge won that division's Main Event impressively. He would like to come back and support all nine races this year, but he's hoping that some of his fellow competitors feel the same way about bringing their cars to the track. "Car count got a little bit down last year, so we started racing at other places, " Mark explained. "I don't want to come out and beat a field of five or six cars. I'd feel just as good about finishing fifth in a field of 20 cars."

Wauge beat a field of 14 cars last week, which means we will probably see him at the division's next appearance on May 21st . "This is my home track, and I've run for points just about every year since I started, " he added.  "I was talking to other racers about coming out here, because I want to see the cars come back. This division puts on a good show for the fans."

Likewise, Winged Sprint Car competitor Vern Wheeler Jr. has been vilified for supporting the cause this year. However, the track is only a few minutes from his house and Wheeler just wants to race. "A few people have called me names for coming out here and racing, " Vern explained. "I just want to race, and I want this division to grow here."

Wheeler brings an experience advantage over the rest of the competition this year, and he's hoping that some of the more experienced teams come out and start racing. "I see what the management is trying to do out here and what they were dealing with coming in, and I understand,"  he remarked as he pointed to the grandstands. "The fans want to see Sprint Cars, and they will start coming back. They are starting to come back. I think that will be reflected in the purse if this continues."

Southern Oregon Outlaw Karts Kick Off 
 New Season On Friday

The little Field of Dreams at Southern Oregon Speedway, the 1/8th mile banked clay oval, kicks off its racing season Friday night. On the slate for the evening will be the Beginner Box Stock division for kids 5 to 8 years old, Intermediate Box Stocks, 125's, 250's, 500's and Micro Sprints.

The little track was built back in 1998 by Ron Shulbin, who promoted the track for the first ten years. Through the years, many youngsters have had their racing careers launched on that race track. Stars such as Camden Robustelli, Chadd Noland and Seth Nunes won their first championships out there.

An eight race schedule has been planned, beginning with this weekend's race. There will be two races per month from now through August, and a special race is being planned for midway through the year. An announcement will be forthcoming.

The Wall of Champions will show that last season's title winners were Trent Florey (Beginner Box Stock), Trevor Grimes (Box Stock), Wyatt Pinchney (125's), Tanner Holmes (250's) and Joseph Benton (500's).

General admission tickets are $5.00 with children under 5 free. Grandstands Open at 5:00 p.m. with the first race scheduled for 7:00 p.m. sharp.

 Wheelers Go 1-2 In Sprint Cars Again

Grabbing the lead at the start of the race, point leader Vern Wheeler Jr. went flag to flag in  winning the Pennzoil Winged Sprint Car 25 lap Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Once again, his son Jake Wheeler collected the second place finish, and the father and son both run Dave's Carpet & Vinyl/Reecers Fine Fluids sponsored cars.  Vern's win capped a clean sweep performance and paid $700, while Jake was a $500 second.

V. Wheeler gave an indication early on that he would be tough to beat as he took the lead from Jeffrey Hudson and went on to win the Trophy Dash.  He followed that up by taking the lead from Camden Robustelli on lap three and winning the heat race.  With Main Event lineups done straight up from the heat race finishes, V. Wheeler and Robustelli shared the front row of the feature.   Vern raced into the lead with Jake charging into second over Robustelli.  V. Wheeler set a good pace and was lapping slower traffic by lap ten with his son not too far behind him.  Vern appeared to slow his pace around lap 18, and a lap 20 caution flag few for debris on the track.  Hudson pitted during the caution period.  V. Wheeker picked up his pace on the restart and would not be stopped as he took the checkered flag ahead of J. Wheeler, Robustelli and Wayne Kniffen.  Todd Whipple and Husdon rounded out the finish.

Wauge Wins IMCA Modified Opener At 

Southern Oregon Speedway

Driving a great race from his pole position start, six time champion Mark Wauge won the 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Wauge hinted at possibly racing for another championship, and his win was not easy with Matt Duste shadowing his every move up front.  A good field of 14 cars opened the season, and the first Main Event ran non stop with no yellow flags.

The IMCA Modifieds ran two heat races, and Wauge won his heat race by a straightaway ahead of Duste.  Jesse Bailey won the other heat race in front of Kyle Casson.  Wauge and Bailey shared the front row of the Main Event and ran 1-2 for a lap before Duste made an inside pass in Turn 4 a lap later to grab second from Bailey.  2015 Yreka champion Nick Trenchard made an inside pass in Turn 3 of the fourth lap to take third from Bailey.  Wauge was lapping slower cars by lap 12.  Bailey and Trenchard were batting for third, and Bailey made a low pass in Turn 4 of the 15th lap to reclaim the position.  Trenchard appeared to be a bit under powered down the stretch as he surrendered fourth to two time champion Albert Gill on lap 17.  Wauge never really shook Duste off of his tail in the non stop event, but he drove a great race for the victory.  Bailey collected a third place finish ahead of Gill, Trenchard, Kyle Csson, Duane Orsburn and Jeremy Ohlde.

Though the IMCA Sport Modifieds will be at the track as part of a five division show this week, the IMCA Modifieds will return on May 21st.  Both divisions are a part of the Roger Haudenschild Tribute race on May 28th.  For further information, check out www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Braaten Begins Title Defense With Opening Victory

Jorddon Braaten kicked off his title defense in style by winning the first IMCA Sport Modified Main Event of the season Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Braaten has won the last two championships and is looking for a third one before an intended move up to IMCA Modifieds in 2017.  Braaten had a mid race challenge from two time champion Dwayne Melvin before collecting the victory.  Melvin settled for second.

Melvin gave every indication that he would be a factor when he held off Braaten to win their heat race.  Yreka visitor Garrett Hamilton won the other heat race ahead of Bob Nelsen.  In the Main Event, Braaten raced past front row starters Melvin and Hamilton to lead the opening lap ahead of Melvin and Nelsen.  The race had a yellow flag after Mike Medel and Garrett Hamilton got together on the back stretch.  The incident collected Randy Fernandes, who suffered the most damage.  Fernandes was out of the race as Braaten continued to lead Melvin and Nelsen.  Working lap nine, Melvin got a run down the back stretch and passed Braaten for the lead, only to have the pass negated by a yellow flag for Medel.  Braaten continued to lead Melvin and Nelsen on the restart, and the lead trio ran in that order the rest of the way.  Jimmy Lipke would hold off rookie David Marble to finish fourth with Kurt Lorenzini the final lead lap finisher in sixth.

Anderson Thwarts Burkett's Bid For Clean Sweep 

At Southern Oregon Speedway

Rebounding from a win that got away from him a week earlier, 2014 Mini Stock champion Gary Anderson won the 20 lap feature Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Anderson lost the lead to Bob Burkett in traffic on lap 18 a week earlier, but this time he got the lead from Burkett midway through the race and never looked back in victory.  Burkett settled for a close second.

Burkett started his night off right by winning the Trophy Dash ahead of 14 year old Marissa Henson.  The Burkett-Anderson battle began with Burkett winning their heat race.  Andrew Hall drove his Pinto Wagon to his second straight heat win ahead of Ethan Killingsworth.  The Main Event lineups were straight up off of the heat race finishes, and pole sitter Burkett raced into the early lead over Hall and Anderson.  Killingsworth took fourth from Kristopher Mix on lap four, and a low move in Turn 3 of the fifth lap gained Anderson second from Hall.  There was contact between the two, and Hall spun to fall out of the Top 5.  Henson was fourth at that point, and Burkett and Anderson pulled away from the pack.  The lead duo hit the front line in a dead heat on lap nine, and Anderson made an inside move in Turn 2 a lap later to take the lead.  Hall made an inside pass in Turn 3 of the 13th lap to take fifth from Mix.  Anderson set a good pace down the stretch and was a happy winner as Burkett settled for second.  Killingsworth was a solid third ahead of Henson and Hall.

The Mini Stocks are off next week, but they return on the 21st. This week, the Super 4's return to the track and are joined by Outlaw Pro Stocks, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hornets and OTRO Hardtops.  For further information, check the website at www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Vern Wheeler Jr. wrapped up another clean sweep performance with his win in the 25 lap Pennzoil Winged Sprint Car Main Event.  Wheeler led from the start, but he appeared to slow down around lap 18.  A lap 20 caution flag flew for debris on the track, and V. Wheeler picked up the pace on the restart to put some distance between himself and Jake Wheeler.  Camden Robustelli was third ahead of Wayne Kniffen and Todd Whipple.  V. Wheeler won the heat race and Trophy Dash.

Six time IMCA Modified champion Mark Wauge returned for the season opener and won the 25 lap Main Event.  Wauge drove a flawless race in the event that would have no yellow flags.  Matt Duste was a strong second ahead of Jesse Bailey.  Two time defending champion Albert Gill settled for fourth as Nick Trenchard rounded out the Top 5.  Heat wins went to Wauge and Zach Fettinger.

Two time defending IMCA Sport Modified champion Jorddon Braaten kicked off the season in style by winning the 20 lap Main Event.  Braaten started on the front row and set the pace through one yellow flag period.  A yellow on lap nine negated a pass on the back stretch for the lead by two time champion Dwayne Melvin.  Braaten could never shake Melvin from his rear bumper the rest of the way, but he still scored a well earned victory ahead of Melvin, Bob Nelsen, Jimmy Lipke and David Marble.  Melvin and Garrett Hamilton won heat races.

Gary Anderson thwarted Bob Burkett's attempt at a Mini Stock clean sweep.  Burkett had won both the Trophy Dash and his heat race.  Burkett led the first nine laps of the Main Event from the pole before Anderson drove it in high on the outside in Turn 1 and dove underneath Burkett for the lead on Turn 2.  Once in front, Anderson made all the right moves in traffic for the win.  Burkett settled for second in the non stop race with Yrkea visitor Ethan Killingsworth third.  Marissa Henson earned a Trophy dash start for the next race as she held off heat winner Andrew Hall for the fourth place finish.

On Friday night, the Outlaw Kart track will open for Kart racing.  Racing continues on the big track next Saturday night

Hay In Good Spirits After Flip

It was a nice start to the 20th Anniversary season at Southern Oregon Speedway last Saturday.  A good turnout of fans watched the four division show as Steve Borror (Pro Stocks), Josh King (Dwarf Cars), Vern Wheeler Jr. (Pennzoil Winged Sprint Cars) and Bob Burkett (Mini Stocks) were the respective winners.  This week, the IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Modifieds will kick off their season, while Sprint Cars and Mini Stocks return.

Albert Gill is the reigning champion of the IMCA Modifieds, while Mark Wauge is a six time division titles.  Both drivers are anticipated on Saturday as well as several other hard chargers, including Tim Bailey and Jesse Bailey, who were both Top 5 competitors last season.  Past Pro Stock and Modified champion Brian Poppa, Zach Fettinger, Jeremy Ohlde, Monte Bischoff and Andy Freeman are others we anticipate seeing this year.

There is another past track champion returning to the fold in IMCA Modifieds this season.  That would be two time Street Stock champion Duane Osburn.  After finishing second in points at Yreka last season, Osburn has a goal in mind.  "We are running every race this year, " he explained.  "We are going for the championship."

Jorddon Braaten has an IMCA Modified in the works.  In the meantime, the two time IMCA Sport Modified champion attempts a "threepeat" and an IMCA State championship.  To do that, he'll have to beat reining Oregon State champion Mike Medel.  Braaten already has two wins on the circuit, while Medal has one.  Former IMCA Modified point runner up Matt Duste will be racing this year.  Two time champion Dwayne Melvin, Glen Severson, Randy Fernandes and Bob Nelsen are others to watch for.

After winning the 2015 Mini Stock title, David Marble will be making a run at "Rookie Of The Year" honors in a Sport Modified.  That leaves the door open for Bob Burkett and 2014 champion Gary Anderson to win this year's Mini Stock title.  Burkett, who has four second place rankings in this division, is going for it.  "We're planning to run every race this season, " Burkett revealed last Saturday.  "In the past, I've missed a race or two every season to do other things."

The Mini Stocks staged the best battle of the night last week as Burkett won a shootout with Anderson.  Marrissa Henson was a close third and will be a driver to keep an eye on in the battle for wins this season.  Even the Mini Wagon of Andrew Hall ran strong with a heat win and fifth place finish last week.  The racers are stepping up their game to compete with Burkett and Anderson.

Several new drivers are entering the Mini Stock ranks, including 2015 Hornets point runner up Mikey Johnson, Devon Weiser and Dillon Lausen.  Lausen is the teammate of Henson and Weiser, and he hopes to move up the ladder in the future.  "I'd like to race a Dwarf Car, " he admitted.  Dillon already has experience with motorcycle engine race cars as the runner up in the 250 Outlaw Kart class last season.

Speaking of Dwarf Cars, Fred Hay was a welcome sight in the Dwarf Car pits last week.  Fred will probably be out for the season after suffering a broken kneck in his flip at Chico Silver Dollar Speedway a month ago.  "I don't remember much about what happened, " Hay recalls.  "The next thing I remember was waking up in the hopital and wondering how I got there."

Despite the crash that left him in the hospital for five days, Fred was in good spirits as he walked the pits and spoke with his fellow competitors.  At one point, he quipped, "I have a better necklace than you do.  Mine is more expensive."

The Dwarf Car group raised money for Hay's medical expenses by running a special 15 lap race, which was won by Chad Cardoza.  Drivers paid a special entry fee that went to Hay.  Former Dwarf Car racer Fred O'Nan also auctioned off some stuff and donated the money to Hay.

Not to be forgotten are the Winged Sprint Cars.  Vern Wheeler Jr. and Jake Wheeler had a 1-2 finish in the Main Event last week.  As a feature winner at the track in the past, it was not a surprise to see Vern grab the checkered flag.  Jake had his hands full holding off 15 year old Jeffrey Hudson for second.  It was Hudson's first start in the division, but the 2015 Pro Stock champion looks like he's been driving these cars for years.

Bill Hopper made the trip in from California and suffered nothing but problems. First, he got a flat on his tow vehicle, which caused him to arrive just before hot laps.  Then, his motor wouldn't start.  Another driver who had misfortune was budget racer Wayne Kniffen.  In the end, it was lack of sponsorship that kept him from the track.

The former Mini Stock and Modified B Main champion did all that he could to be there.  "I'm pretty bummed that we couldn't be there, " said Wayne.  "I tried everything, but I just couldn't make it work."

Wayne has been trying to line up sponsorship to make his return, but it's been tough.  However, it looks like he'll be able to make it this week.  There have been a few rumblings in the Sprint Car community, but Kniffen see things differently.  "To me, it's about going out there and putting on a show for the fans and having fun, " said Kniffen.

Kniffen will be among the Sprint Car field when they return this week.  The gates open at 5 p.m. and the first race starts at 7 p.m. sharp.  Adult tickets are $12, seniors and juniors are $6 and children 5 and under are free.  For further information, check out the official website at www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

King, Cardoza Have Big Nights At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...April 30...Taking the lead from Ryan Smith on the eighth lap, Josh King went on to win the 20 lap SODCA Dwarf Car Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  King is the reigning two time champion of the group, and he isn't expected to run the full schedule as he has moved to California.  Smith, who is the 2014 point runner up, settled for second.  The group also ran a special $1000, winner take all, 15 lap fund raising race for Fred Hay, who suffered a broken neck in a flip in Chico a month ago.  The winner's money was donated, and all drivers paid a special entry fee that went to Hay.  Chad Cardoza scored the victory.

A field of 14 Dwarf Cars competed in the track's season opener.  They ran two heat races with Cardoza out dueling Brock Peters to win the first six lap race.  King collected the win in the second heat ahead of Smith.  The A Dash was another good battle with Cardoza winning a close race with King for his second preliminary win.  The B Dash saw 2015 point runner up Camden Robustelli winning ahead of Rob Gergel.

Luck of the draw put Cardoza on the front row of the special 15 lap race for Hay.  There were 12 entrants, raising $600 for Hay, combined with some auctions that past Dwarf Car racer Fred O'Nan donated.  In the special race, Cardoza led all the way for the $1000 victory.  Peters won a close four car battle for second as King was third ahead of Smith and Kalvin Morton.

The Main Event had King starting on the third row outside as Smith was on the front row outside.  Smith raced into the early lead ahead of Robustelli and Mason Lewman.  King raced past Lewman for third on lap two and made an inside pass in Turn  2 of the fourth lap for second.  Robustelli had a flat right rear tire and limped to the pits as Cardoza was in third.  King and Smith staged a side by side battle from lap five through lap eight before King got the bite he needed on the inside in Turn 2 to take the lead.  Teammates Peters and Morton were fourth and fifth at that point, but Peters pitted on lap nine.  King was lapping slower traffic by lap 14 as he pulled away from Smith.  By the checkered flag, King had a straightaway advantage over Smith.  Morton made a lap 19 pass on Cardoza to claim the third place finish.  Cardoza settled for fourth as Lewman rounded out the Top 5.

Borror Two For Two In Outlaw Pro Stocks 

White City, Oregon...April 30...Taking the lead from two time champion Ken Irving on the fifth lap, Steve Borror went on to win the 20 lap Valley Boys Auto Sales Outlaw Pro Stock Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  It was the second win of the year for Borror, who also won the season opener in Yreka.  Irving drove a good race to finish second.

The Pro Stocks ran two six lap heat races, and Irving cruised to a half lap victory in the second heat as Matt Harlow settled for second.  Rick Lukens held off a heavy challenge from Roy Bain to win the a good battle in the first heat.  A bad heat race effort had Borror starting at the back of the pack in the Main Event, and heat winners Lukens and Irving shared the front row.  Irving charged out to the lead at the green flag.  Bain was an early second, and Borror was already in third by lap two.  A struggling Scott Flowers was lapped on lap three before retiring from the race, and Borror was second a lap later.  The lead duo ran lap five in a dead heat before Borror moved into the lead.  As Borror began to pull away, James Flowers moved up to battle Bain for third.  A lap 11 caution flag flew for a Mike Prill spin in Turn 2.  Two time Super 4 champion  Brian Johnsen pitted, and Borror continued to lead on the restart.  Bain briefly got by Irving for second, but an outside pass on the front stretch of the 14th lap regained Irving second. J. Flowers moved past Bain for third in lap 17.  The flying Borror had more than a half lap lead and lapped fifth place Matt Harlow at the finish.  Borror collected the win over Irving, James Flowers, Bain, Harlow, Johnny Cobb, Lukens, Julia Flowers, and Arlen Garrison.

Burkett Battles Anderson For Victory 

At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...April 30...Taking the lead from 2014 champion Gary Anderson on lap 18, Bob Burkett won the season opening 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.  Burkett is a four time point runner up, but he has declared intent to run for the track championship.  Anderson was a close second with Marissa Henson a strong third.

The Mini Stock ranks have grown with drivers moving up from the Hornet class.  Burkett set the stage early on for what was to come as he won the first six lap heat race by a half lap ahead of Henson.  Andrew Hall scored an equally impressive heat win in his Mini Wagon ahead of Mike Cloud.  Eric Hanson scratched before the feature, and Michael Johnson was unable to take the green after starter problems.

Heat winners Burkett and Hall had front row starts for the Main Event, but Anderson started back in the fourth row outside after a bad heat race.  Burkett set the early pace ahead of Hall and Henson.  Kristopher Mix slipped past Henson for third on the back stretch on lap three.  Patrick Stringer-Stine spun for a lap five caution flag.  Burkett led Hall on the restart as Henson and Anderson shuffled Mix back to fifth.  Hall spun in Turn 2 of the tenth lap as Henson was now second ahead of Anderson.  Anderson made an outside move on the back stretch to take second from Henson on lap 12 and went low in Turn 4 of the 13th lap to grab the lead from Burkett.  The lead trio set a rapid pace up front and caught slower traffic by lap 17.  Anderson remained committed to the outside, which was where the slower cars were running.  Burkett moved by on the inside in Turn 2 and emerged with the lead.  Burkett brought it home to victory with a disappointed Anderson settling for second.  Henson was a career best third as Mix and Hall rounded out the Top 5.  Hornet graduates Dillon Lausen and Devon Weiser finished sixth and eighth, respectively, as Cloud was seventh.

Sprint Car Racing Returns To 

Southern Oregon Speedway Saturday Night

White City, Oregon...May 2...When Mike McCann and KJE Enterprises entered the picture at Southern Oregon Speedway to usher the track into its 20th Anniversary season, Sprint Car racing was part of his plan. Hence, the Pennzoil Winged Sprint Cars, presented by Hays Oil, were given a 10 race schedule this year.

The season started off last Saturday with the father-son duo of Vern Wheeler Jr. and Jake Wheeler grabbing the 1-2 finish. A multi time Main Event winner during the division's sporadic visits to the speedway over the past five seasons, Vern was somewhat dominant last Saturday night.

After a runaway victory in the heat race, Vern jumped out into the Main Event lead at the start and had a good lead until he hit lap traffic around lap 18. That enabled Jake Wheeler and young Jeffrey Hudson to move behind him for a couple laps until Vern got by the slower cars and pulled away again.

Meanwhile, Jake Wheeler and Jeffrey Hudson had a nice battle going all night long. In the heat race, 14 year old Hudson, The Outlaw Pro Stock champion last season, beat Jake to get the second place finish. However, Jake was not to be denied the runner up finish in the Main Event. The second place finish was good enough for $500, while Jake's father Vern picked up the $700 winner's paycheck.

Wheeler has earned some impressive credentials in his time behind the wheel of a Sprint Car. Just a couple seasons ago, Wheeler finished a strong second in the Coos Bay-Southern Oregon Speedway Sprint Car Series, won by Kyler Barazza.

Long time Sprint Car observers noticed how smooth Hudson was behind the wheel of his car all night long. It was only his first start in this division, and he looked like he'd been driving these cars for several years.

The battle for forth all night centered around 2015 Dwarf Car point runner up Camden Robustelli and Todd Whipple. The two drivers ran in close formation in the heat race and the Main Event, with Robustelli coming out ahead. Robustelli is running a Limited Sprint Car this year, and his schedule has him racing either a Sprint Car or a Dwarf Car throughout the summer and early fall this year. Camden has been racing for most of his life and is a past champion in Outlaw Kart racing.

As for Whipple, the Southern Oregon Speedway Sprint Car effort gives him the chance to finally get some real seat time behind the wheel of his Sprint Car. Todd has focused more on his IMCA Modified in recent years, ranking in the Top 5 in points at Yreka last year. He has only made sporadic appearances in his Sprint Car over the past few seasons, and he hopes to get more time out at Southern Oregon Speedway. As they say, the only way to get better in racing is to get more time behind the wheel.

California long tow Bill Hopper, a two time Orland Wingless Sprint Car champion, had a nightmare scenario last week. It started when he got a flat tire on the way up to Oregon. When he got there, just before hot laps, his motor would not fire. It's not known how much of a setback this will be for the team. Bill had intended to support the entire season.

Another driver who had intended to support the cause, 2010 champion Chadd Noland, has seen his Sprint Car effort hindered by the fact that his business burnt down during the off season. We should see Chadd at some point this season as well as 2009 Southern Oregon Speedway champion, Charlie Thompson. Several names have been mentioned as planning to be a part of this program, and one driver we anticipate this week will be low buck racer Wayne Kniffen.

Kniffen has been a competitor at the speedway since it began, running several different divisions. His low budget has kept him from being at the front of the pack at times, but he does have B Main Event championships in Mini Stocks and Modifieds. Wayne had intended to be there for the opening event, but lack of sponsorship delayed the return of the past Top 10 point runner. He has said that he plans to make it this week.

This will be the second of 10 scheduled events for the Pennzoil Winged Sprint Cars at the fast 3/10 mile, banked clay oval. McCann remains committed to establishing a Sprint Car program.
